I agree with you to a point but I wouldn't agree at all that just any gui or none at all would work for someone who only uses three or four programs at a time. You still need to efficiently switch between the apps, or view them at the same time, not to mention all the other types of data that is persistent like time, weather background apps, notifications, etc. I'm certainly not intending to flame you but I'd completely disagree with you that the linux desktop is only good for a browser or screen. I'd argue that it's much better than XP. ( I can't say about win7 ) What specifically about windows desktop is making your experience much better than the Ubuntu desktop? Have you tried the Ubuntu desktop lately?
Are you kidding? Everyone that isn't a 'computer person' is still using their daughter's name or the favorite type of sports car brand, one word all lower case passwords for all sites and always will. The best security advancements don't come from new theoretical math theory, they come from making security easy and convenient for average people.
By 'they' I mean a distro, like Ubuntu for instance. If 10gui eventually comes up with their own window manager (I'm not sure how they plan to distribute or implement their desktop idea.) Ubuntu could let you choose between it and a more standard one like Gnome the same way you can decide between gnome or kde.
Also though, the 10gui concept does change the interface pretty dramatically, the concept would work for any program out there out of the box. In fact, if you use one of wacom's bamboo devices which are already available you'd have the benefit of pen input for fine grain control in artsy applications.
I guess it's somewhat objective and dependent on your hardware anyway but even with lots of programs open on my main machine I don't notice any slowdown... I think if linux is really gonna pull ahead of the pack they aught to take a gamble on a new, useful interface. Something like 10gui. The risk could even be mitigated by having a choice to load either type of desktop at the beginning with a quick video to demonstrate the difference.:)
You can test at high altitude on Earth, possibly by deploying the aircraft from a balloon.
After reading through the ares page this is dead on: "September 19, 2002 flight test in Mars relevant conditions:
Autonomous deployment and flight from 103,500 feet
" - There's a pic of it but that would be an awesome video to see.
It's interesting that they tested the rocket in earth atmosphere, wouldn't it be pretty different on mars? I'd give them the benefit of the doubt though based on their success with the rover missions...
A security blanket... brilliant. As long as it holds up under the immense heat from restricted airflow, I have feeling my fears are over! Oh wait though, didn't Ben Franklin have something to say about this? Like, "Those that would accept restricted airflow in exchange for false security deserve to have all their components reflowed in their makeshift towel oven", I think.
This book seems like a whole lot of work... isn't there a lazier approach that would just make my servers *feel* more secure?! Ostriches have the right idea, I think. ( P.S. After this post, I hope my IP isn't viewable by the public... )
Haha, yes actually. I worked the dell tech support lines before they all got outsourced to India. That was one of my early jobs so I guess I was paying my dues. And while tech support for computers sucks, consider yourself lucky. I briefly did support for digital telephone lines before that and it was the worst, soul sucking job I've ever had. A sizable percentage of computer users know they know nothing about their pc and just want help fixing it and were ecstatic if you could help them. The digital telephone customers didn't want to trouble shoot a simple phone and 99 % of the time there was nothing to be done for them anyway as it was usually just an outage. I guess I'm saying that it's better to deal with *'dumb' people than assholes. *(to be fair they're not always dumb in matters that aren't computer related.)
If this IQ test is like any other IQ test on the web than it's more than useless... I got a high score when I try them but if I select options at random I get average intelligence or slightly above. So I think their test implies that a laptop and a ferret in a dryer are smarter than the average human. Although I might be missing the point of this article since it's more entertainment oriented. I just get riled up about online IQ tests...:)
I'm not sure I agree with you completely, you're right that that scene had more grown up themes than people usually think kids can handle but I think that's why their stories are so good. They're not pandering to kids and they treat them with a little more respect than most 100% slapstick kids movies. Plus, that scene aside the majority of the movie contained more typical childrens themes and humor. However if your point is that Pixar movies blur the line between kids movies and more grown up entertainment I wouldn't argue that with you.
Windows malware is getting insane... I don't run as admin *ever* and I don't use IE so I keep pretty clean but some *really* nasty stuff has gotten through. People love to say PEBKAC and all but with some of these programs, I wouldn't be surprised if a seasoned computer person got fooled let alone a casual user. The last one I had faked a freaking bluescreen pretty convincingly, even...
I honestly thought the writing in Wall-E was pretty incredible. I don't think they were saying Wall-E gained sentience from being on for a long time. At least I don't remember that being part of the plot. One of the amazing parts for me was how emotive Wall-E was without ever speaking a single word. Sometimes when I remember back to the movie I forget that the two main characters had zero lines of dialogue. I seriously doubt many other writers could pull that off. I am a huge sci-fi fan too though, so maybe that created some bias for my part.
I did actually see that one and I thought pretty much exactly the same thing. The visuals were amazing but the plot and writing was pretty awful. And that's coming from an old-school final fantasy fan.
I always mentally put these parts of the slashdot poll disclaimer in front of sales figures released by *any* company: "This whole thing is wildly innacurate... If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane."
I haven't seen Ratatouille but I really enjoyed The Incredibles. I thought the movie was well done, polished and interesting. Lots of childrens movies are awfully immature and boring but have a few adult references thrown in almost like easter eggs to keep the parents from dying of boredom. All the Pixar movies I've seen have been pretty entertaining throughout on their own merit. But even so I think they're just so well written and animated they Children love them and anyone can enjoy them.
Yah what you need is one of these guys: http://www.google.com/search?q=pc+ir+blaster
The Wii-mote is basically just working like a fancy keyboard for me. An IR blaster will get your computer talking to all your IR only components.
I've said this before when the topic of Pixar came up but I would really, really love to see them produce a movie specifically for adults! I don't mean pornographic or lots of explosions, either. Just a well written, animated movie! You can do so much when it's all animated and it's easier to suspend disbelief for fantastic visuals. No one complains that a crazy scene looks cgi if the whole movie is cgi!:) It just seems like there's this stigma about animation being only for children in America. If anyone could turn that around I bet Pixar could. It doesn't have to be hardcore cyber-punk or anything just *any* story with the same solid, deep writing and visuals that the movie Wall-E had.
Haha, not quite. I don't use the accelerometer sensor. The buttons on it change the channel and volume, etc. And when I'm in browser mode the IR camera functionality on allows me to use it like a mouse/pointer device. Also, when I'm using the snes emulator I can connect the classic controller to it and play the games like they were meant to be played! Take that shitty IR remote!
Although, full disclosure, since I've moved from mythtv to boxee after comcast allowed me to buy internet without cable tv, I'm using my android phone instead.
You seem like a people person, I bet you're fun at parties.

I'm actually already working on an open source project, but I'd love to be in on a program like what 10gui is working on!
Dang, didn't mean to post as anonymous, the parent post is authored by me, falldeaf.

Maybe this is short sited but I think the gains from making it to mars will be greater than detriment changes we'll make to the planet.

That's a good point but I feel like my point still stands.

I can't wait until a stable, generic driver comes out for it that sees gestures! I'll use it to control my tv in place of the wii-mote. :)
