"The RIAA is also backing legislation in states such as Illinois and Tennessee that would require schools that get a certain number of notices to begin installing deep packet monitoring equipment on their internet and intranets, according to Luker."
OK. Being the practical person that I am, who's going to pay for it? Who's going to pay for the time, materials, and personnel necessary to accomplish this goal? The RIAA? The University? The civil service branch that runs each university? The students?
The RIAA wants this, they want that, they don't want to PAY for the information they claim they need. So what's the problem? If they, as if they were a company, wants to see particular data collected, then they, as a company, are required to PAY for it. And that includes, among other things, the hardware and software necessary to collect and coallate the information, the h/w & s/w necessary to handle the data in whatever form is necessary, and the salaries of the folks involved in said production. As well as the legal fees to protect all of the aforementioned data from the various laws that prohibit the collection of said data.
In other words, the RIAA MUST be held accountable for the gathering of the data, the consolidation of the data into a database (perhaps Oracle), the fees associated with such an enterprise for each and every school of learning for each state. Yes, we know there is much duplication of effort, but each effort should be separate so as to not contaminate the data of each institution of higher learning. Yes, the RIAA MUST PAY for all of it. And be held financially and legally accountable for the data.
I wonder how much overhead this would bring to their request? Enough to permanently discourage such a brazen act for a very long time? Enough for all the result of the world to enjoy this great soap opera? Enough to show the ruling party of the RIAA how stupid they appear to be? Or enough for the legal entities of each state/school to ask "why are you prosecuting the downloaders as opposed to the uploaders, the REAL crime-inducing folks? Why are you wasting OUR time, OUR resources, and causing OUR reputations to look as bad as yours?"
To hear of an achievement such as this, is a sign of hope.
Not for the robots, but for the amputees who need better hands to replace what they've lost.
If you look only at the surface, would one care what is happening in the robotic world? Probably not. But...if one were to see what such an advancement could do for those of us who have lost limbs? Then this is an amazing achievement.
And I'm speaking from personal experience. For 56 years, I walked on two legs. Eight years ago, I tested positive for type 2 diabetes. Last January, I lost my right foot, from above the knee, to this nasty disease. Now, I live bound to a wheelchair. I can't get any work, because the right leg is missing---how does one drive without the right foot? Yes, I know there are controls to help with that--first I have to be evaluated to determine which set of controls I can use, then buy the controls and have them installed on a vehicle. Not just any vehicle, but more than likely, a van or minivan. The cost? Now there's the limiting factor. The cost for the evaluation and training to drive is over $1000USD. The controls' price ranges from $250 to $2000USD. And then there's the cost of the vehicle. For example, you, as a two-legged individual could purchase a new Honda Odyssey for about $35,000. Fully equipped. For a similar model, for a right-leg amputee? Add another $15,000. And I'm sorry to say, that insurance does not cover this.
Sorry to sound like I'm ranting. It's just personal. So, yes, I'm praying that the work in robotics can be transferred over to the amputees. And that would be the real miracle.
And here the USA is worried about terrorists threats. Right? Put heavy security on airplane flights. Disrupt train/bus centers for fear of terrorists. Read everyone's email and tap their phones.
And for what?
Then along comes Red China (communist, anti-American country, as opposed to Taiwan, the Democratic China) that builds toys for the USA and the world. Coat the toys with a lead compound to kill off the children. Put chemicals on the toys that will, with the addition of moisture, become GBH, a date-rape drug.
Makes me wonder what OTHER chemicals have been put on their toys?
I've often asked when did we sign a peace treaty with Red China? Did we? Because if we didn't, then why hasn't this been claimed as an act of aggression AGAINST the freedom-loving children of the world? Why hasn't this been addressed at the top levels of our government as a TERRORIST ACT AGAINST US?
Walmart has many stores in Red China. And a couple of factories, from what I've heard. Does this fraternization with an enemy make them part of this act of aggression? Think about it.
Just think about it. If we've caught two or three toys that have been chemically altered to become death-dealing or harmful objects, how many more have slipped in? If one child dies from this, then who wins?
A couple of months ago(Apr-June07) my sister-in-law, let me use her Verizon Broadband wireless service. I really hated to go back to 28.8K dialup. Never had any problems.
She said it added about $60USD to her monthly bill, but I thought that it was worth it.
Good luck.
Wow. You used a computer in high school?
Now I feel old.
In school we were taught what the instructor wanted to see in the final report. How it was to be typed (you choice between a manual typewriter or an electric) up, double-spaced, spelled correctly.
There was an expectation of what the report would resemble. How you got it to the instructor was up to you.
The same is true today. There is an expectation of how the report will be structured. Assuming the student has a computer to work with, a spell-checker is a necessity. If the output is desired in a Word format, it should be up to the student to use either Microsoft's Word, or Sun's Open Office. Unless the school board is going to purchase the software for the student and insure that it is correctly installed on the student's home machine. Free of charge for the student.
You have a problem opening PDF files to be read? Check out Foxit Software's PDF reader. Works faster and is smaller than Adobe's acrobat.
It is not up to the school board to dictate WHAT software is used by the student, but give the instruction that is must be able to be read into the instructor's version of Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access/whatever.
But then I believe that all students of elementary, junior high, and seniot high schools should be charged admission, just like the private & pariochial schools charge. Not charging all of the people witin that city to support the students.
But that's just my opinion.
Have problems with their IT dept? Find out who the VP of technology AND the CIO's names. Send snail-mail to the bank, attention to each of them. If possible name the folks who you talked to.
It's also a nice touch to mention how many years you have worked in the financial industry, as well as security administrator on various projects.
Vent as much as possible without resorting to "cuss words".
Offer possible technical solutions with a possible price tag.
Sell these folks the idea that YOU are a professional trying to offer advice upon receipt of the original email to you. You might refer to it as a professional response to a serious problem that the bank IT staff appears to be incapable of handling.
Having worked at a fairly large US Bank (10 years), major defense contractor (6 years), and one of the more prestigious medical universities for another 6 years, I'm more than familiar with the attitude of such "big" IT sites.
The only time they will admit they're wrong is at review time.
Knowing the Russians propensity for acquiring new ideas (check out their versions of the F15 & F18), they probably "borrowed" a pirated copy of Windows 3.11, translated it into Russian, and applied numerous Microsoft updates to it.
Now it needs either more quarters or another update before it can finally work.
If we really wanted to FIX the damn thing, we'd rip out the old box, slip in an Alpha, then install a GOOD operating system (OpenVMS) and everything would work.
After all, it is a system designed by Engineers, for Engineers, and works as designed.
For long periods of time. WITHOUT the need to reboot. (Are you listening Micro$oft?)
But that's just my opinion.
This is NOT science fiction. Not by a long shot.
Space ships...ok.
Using projectile weapons aboard a ship in space...stupid.
Looking for Earth...why? Why would we want to be found? YOU left us, so why should we want you back?
Character development? I've seen more "development" on anime.
When will it end?
And all the while, the "good" Rev. Sharpton relabels Jews as diamond cutters and
rallies against the white folks using whatever language that strikes his fancy,
and gets away with it.
Nothing like a double-standard.
Should the same rules apply to ALL men? It says so in the Constitution and Bill
of Rights. ALL MEN. Both sexes. All colors. All Americans.
If you don't like the rules, then go back to your "Mother Country" and see how
long you'd survive.
And he has degrees. So what? Has he any REAL experience in the IT field?
Whom has he worked for? What has he done?
Besides sit on his ass and throw more US jobs out the window?
Or perhaps he is a terrorist hoping to farm out jobs to non-Americans so that they can invade our country, dismember our culture, and rob us blind?
Bitter? Who? Me?
Just because I've been unemployed for nearly 6 years AND HAVE OVER 30 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN IT!
but can't find a job in my home state, let alone any moderately sized city within 50 miles of here. And this clown wants to have more foreigners come in and take MY JOBS!
IMPEACH HIM! ARREST HIM AND CHARGE HIM WITH TREASON! Or, simply, remove his citizenship from him, seize his assests, and throw him out of the country. Then he can get a visa to work here.
What we don't need is to have more H1B visa's and temporary imported workers. We have more than enough already unemployed IT folks to fill the jobs we've got.
Besides, the last "foreign" consultant that called me asked if I had a visa. I inquired where the job was, and he responded, "St. Louis, MO". When I informed him that I lived an hour south of that job-prospect, was a US Citizen, and didn't need a passport to travel in-state, he kept repeating "Do you have a passport?"
I guess understanding English was not included in his cirriculum. But I think a 2x4 to the back of his head, MIGHT drive home the point.
OK. quit griping. quit flamin'. DO something constructive.

If all of us would do this EACH AND EVERY TIME Hollywood tried this, it just might make someone sit up and take notice.
Although I did add a few sentences that I'm sure will make my Senators & Representatives sit up and take notice. If they don't stop monkeying around and playing buddy-buddy to these repressive ideas, then perhaps it is time to recall all of the senators and representatives from Washington. Put limitations on terms -- no more than 8 years of service. Not just continous or fragmented, but total years of service. No more big cars.
No more living in mansions. No more junkets. No more "special" retirement fund -- they get social security, just like the rest of us. No more special privileges. Perhaps a pay cut back to realistic levels. You get the idea.
If they want us to swallow their bull, then they will have to face the consequences.
YOU. The voting public have the power AND the inclination to affect change. If you don't take action? Then Hollywood wins. So quit your whining and do something about it.
