  1. Put it in perspective: IT'S HUGE! on Internet Deconstructing State Church in Finland · · Score: 3, Informative

It may not sound like big news if 41000 people use a web service in some small country somewhere. But it is actually a huge effect. In a country of 5 million, nearly 1% of all people - including kids and pensioners - have resigned from a powerful institution with few clicks in the last couple of years. In US that would correspond to almost 3 million people!

And the Church is terrified. Thay are losing income at an increasing pace. They have already announced a need to shrink the number of priests and church workers in the future.

The Lutheran Church of Finland is still trying to defend it's bastion as a major institution on par with government, army and universities. The lutheran church in Sweden has already been kicked out from government protection and the process is beginning in Norway.

The Chuch is still powerful - almost evil - consider this:

    - Most don't even notice that 1.3% of their income is sucked out

    - At the age of 14, kids have to go to religious camps where they are forced to attest their faith. When they graduate, they are rewarded with presents and told that "now they are adults". You might have thought state-churches are tame, but this a Brainwashing, and nothing else. Bloody sickening.

    - Even today there is just one (or two?) graveyards for non-religious people - and the church loves it's monopoly - if you are as an atheist buried to church graveyard, you'll have to pay hefty extra.

    - Religion is thought in school, and the 85% who are members, MUST attend and pass. Otherwise no diplomas are coming your way. Could we possibly use this time better? Maths, languages, anyone?

    - Due to all this brainwashing, is it no wonder that many people in Finland are completely unable to critizise or question the church or religion. Even though nobody talks about it, it is somehow accepted as a part of "culture".

In this perspective the phenomenon that is reported here is perhaps THE best internet movement that has ever taken place in Finland. Lot's of money and people are involved, and I hope, some cleansing of thinking as well.

  2. But who IS certified? on Squaring the Open Source/Open Standards Circle · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'd like to support the nonfragmentation of Linux - as I guess many would. But looking at the LSB 3.0 certified list http://freestandards.org/en/Products, just shows Red Hat, SUSE and Asianux. Are these all the choices I have?

    Could someone please explain me?

  3. Sign the damn thing! on Amnesty International vs. Internet Censorship · · Score: 5, Insightful

I can't believe this. Amnesty, a major human right organisation with lots of members, money and influence takes up internet freedom as a campaining topic and what do slashdotters do? Moan, complain and try to rip jokes out of it.

Believe me, Amnesty has been able to change pretty many things in this world, and for better. Now they are taking up the case of Shi Tao, who got 10 years in China for advancing freedom. Now sign the damn petition, it takes a freaking 10 seconds! Would be great to have 100.000 names on it. Slashdotters could and should help.

  4. FIGHT for Linux on Desktop on Can Ordinary PC Users Ditch Windows for Linux? · · Score: 1

Linux can be made a desktop replacement, but it requires some willpower:

-Not to burst into tears when some of your hardware doesn't work - just buy another piece.

-Fight you way through the distro jungle to conquer the differences in package management, installers and system configuration.

-Kill the big hairy monster called "the must have Win app". Expect a week's of search for an alternative and another week's desperate configuration of the WINE emulator.

-Master the magical spells like "libdvdcss" and few others to get your multimedia running.

At the end of the journey, you will be exhausted, but, like after a marathon, glowing with happiness and achievement. It's just so nice to be another little pain in Bill Gates' arse.

Then you can send all your friends to the battle as well, by telling them how EASY it is. BWAHAHAAHAHAAA!!!

  6. Re:Sex query on New Google Services Announced · · Score: 1

No not a joke at all.

What is secret is exciting. In islamic, conservative, strict countries people really are searching for "sex" more than anywhere else.

They can't see too many naked female bodies in Saudi-Arabia or Pakistan. They should really appreciate the west a bit for exporting that imagery straight to their homes!

I'll second that! I'm hooked to Trends already..

I immediately searched for "sex", what else. And voila!

The leading countries are nearly all islamic, strict & ultraconservative.

They know what they need over there..

  8. There exists an optimum of arrogance on Linux Snobs, The Real Barriers to Entry · · Score: 1

First of all, the whole point is a myth. People in Linux forums are unbelievably helpful. This with 3 years of experience - Help comes quickly, clearly and to the point. There are some arrogant people though, usually in the usenet newsgroups, or in the forums of more techie distros. But they are needed, they just give a signal out that in plain English is just "Try to google it first yourself, use the search feature of the forum, and just THINK what you are asking!". Whitout a little bit of arrogant messages around, we'd probably see 10-fold increase in questions in headers like "PLEASE HELP! A CRASH!", and questions like "Hi, does anyone here use Amarok? Pete", not even mentioning the good, proper questions which have already been answered about 10K times in the internet, and which can be found by search. Think about the forums without the assholes. Think about the forums with too much assholes. There is an equilibrium there somewhere. And hey, vote with your feet.. er mouse!
