they should let your database be without an index, another extra load on the webserver, and contribute to everyone on that box being miserable due to overloads.
if you dont want your hosting company to ADD INDEXES to your database, ADD INDEXES YOURSELF.
if you are down to running margarine commercial like tests to make the public accept vista, its time to let it go.
work on your next version, windows 7, dont load it full of drm shit just because a few dinosaurs in big media asked you, make it modular, and you will sell.
but, i really dont think that you will be able to resist the pressure from RIAA, MPAA and other shit.
at first i thought he was a nutjob, but judging from the EXTREMELY STUPID act D.A. just did, i think that the admin was totally right.
unbelievable. disclosing all passwords to a VPN that contains sensitive information.
it doesnt make any difference whether it is not accessible via internet. because there are A LOT of employees that can access that vpn and use those passwords. and its all the worse if they shut down the vpn until they change passwords - it will mean service disruption for many people due to work slowing down in whichever department that uses that vpn.
no sir. if there is anyone that should be prosecuted, its that STUPID d.a.. i really mean it. really unbelievable.
this is not a stupid 'government is evil' republican viewpoint debate.
social organization, central and local governments are the concepts we invented to get us out of goddamn caves and up into the sky.
the abuse of these concepts are causing those stupid 'you need license to take picture of everest' shit. its NOT the fault of government concept or anything. its the fault of PEOPLE YOU ELECT/LET INTO THOSE OFFICES.
yea. in case you forgot, back in late 90s, while all big ad agencies were crooking their nose in regard to small webmasters, site owners, google have accepted them and started adwords/adsense with them. as you can remember, this was the final sling that catapulted google to the level that it can compete with microsoft. then all big boys, who were shunning small webmasters, site owners have fired up adsense/adwords like services. this is how we came to this point.
the point of this is, actually not google, but most of the web depends on such small webmasters, content producers, publishers - ie, basically 'the people'.
its not a good idea to upset them. especially if youre dependent on them.
i dont think anyone on google would be stupid enough to do anything that would damage the web and its freedoms as we know it, for it would be a very, very bad move in regard to PR with bazillions of small webmasters/community leaders/publishers out there.
what you say goes for almost every advance we had in society.
first muskets were crude barrels that you had to lit a fuse to make a sack of gunpowder explode to propel a small metal ball, but they were doing the job, we used them and bettered them.
original law/court system was just invented to resolve conflicts in between farmers in regard to where one's patch started and other's ended, but we used it, bettered it, and we have our legal system now.
same goes for ships, cars, medicine, computers anything.
cheap and delivers what's needed is a compliment. excuse me, but noone cares what us programmers think in all our elitism about which language is classy/better/exhilarating/gross/sucks. they just want what they need. you cant shove in anything they dont need. or they do not care whether you know what they need and dont know. market. volkswagen. ipod. gas guzzler suvs. period.
speaking of which, almost all of the languages and frameworks that were touted as counter arguments to php in this thread belong to microsoft, which is famous for lacking in many respects when it comes to software - insecurity, bloated software, bad interoperability, high cost, name your pick.
It's just so many years of that type type of mentality has actually convinced themselves that their self-serving decisions are ACTUALLY good ideas.
they have not convinced themselves to anything. they are basically trying to convince you to conceal what stunt they are pulling. just like it has always been. you are the herd, they are the shepherd. they get paid for what they do, and you just... well, keep being sheeple.
they are SELF CENTERED and SELF SERVING. sorry i had to yell.
its a battle between selfishness, self centeredness and will of the people.
you think that by protesting, talking to them, you will have them change their mind ? or by working IN the system, you will be able to compete ? how many stuff you have failed to prevent in the last 10 years by doing that ?
they DONT CARE what you think. they get their votes by doing greasy campaigns that run by donation money from whomever has the cash, and they just do as they or their masters please. thats the gist of it.
you better draw them off, and start thinking what you can do WITHOUT them being on board, because they wont be.
how can the ELECTED senators in your country can easily move against the wishes of the people, so blatantly, so fearlessly, so hypocritically ? unbelievable.
volkswagen was a pathetic little car compared to cars of its era. yet, it became one of the few milestones of auto industry.
people use what delivers what they need. no more, no less. they dont need many obscure functionality that happens to be to the liking of programmers and coders. they need just what they need. and when they get it cheap and easy, they'll be happy.
im in turkey. running a small development shop that serves clients around the world. team members are also scattered around the world. an on-site contract job in u.s. or telecommuting in u.s. of course would fetch higher. there would be higher fetching hourly contracts in other countries, depending on the economy and demand.
no dice. LAMP has grown so big that nothing can topple it anymore. many of you are probably not aware, because you are working in old school corporate positions, or even locked into ms shops, however there are bazillions of web sites, estores, portals, communities being hosted on throngs of LAMP servers throughout countless shared hosts both small and big in size throughout the net.
it has grown to such an extent that the scripts have become expertise fields in themselves. they are asking for "joomla experts" in elance, "oscommerce module programmers", "somephpscript api coders". not even plain straight 'php programmer'. you are already expected to have a good grip of php, mysql. these sub expertise fields can really vary in hourly rates that are accepted throughout the markets. as a php coder you may able to get $15 an hour if you're decent (even with the $3/ hour indians get), yet an "oscommerce expert" can fetch you over $20/hour, and other niche stuff can even fetch higher. and thats all telecommuting, not even talking about on-site positions.
im telling these to let you know that even the 'people's community' facet of LAMP has grown to be a market in itself, specializing into subfields. not only that, but as many medium businesses start to adopt lamp, we are increasingly being asked larger scale projects every day.
you cant match the will of the people. it has gone WAY larger than anyone can have a hack at.
but thats microsoft. they may not be able to hack at it, but they may definitely try to dent it. thats their philosophy.
M$ has not brought much to the table. In return their marketing department is going to pretend there is community support for OOXML and other proprietary formats.
Okay, so it was a slight hyperbole;) The combined presence of VB.Net/C#/ASP.Net and the rest of the.Net language does by most measures, out weigh PHP, Ruby, or Pearl individually in terms of distribution and use. But it's all arm chair statistics anyway, change the metrics and you can easily show any single element out performing any other single element.
no, they dont.
do you know how many millions of websites use php on shared hosting ? as opposed to asp servers being generally standalone, serving only one site ? this example should by itself be enough to draw a picture. im not even gonna go into what perl means for linux.
The point, hyperbole aside, still stands. Do you feel that if a product is of lesser popularity, it should be forsaken in favor of the market leader?
the popular is decided by the market itself. php did not became popular because some big buck company pushed it through various means. or spent big marketing cash on it.
no one is saying that anyone should drop their own brainchild. what is being said here is that noone should try to push stuff that has not been getting any kind of preference by the community.
So you are saying we should scratch PHP, Ruby, and Pearl off as well because they don't have nearly the penetration or recognition of.Net?
excuse me, but if you say this, i have no option but laughing over it with my ass. i dont know any decent way to put it. youre totally unaware of what the web is built with.
google cant know where a local farmer's ranch starts and road ends. it publishes the photos that are delivered to them.

a system with 16 x 4870x2s. they will draw less energy too.

youre just being elitist.

its as such in every country.
Cruise agencies, bus companies, airline companies do not require licenses or royalties for photos that are shot by their customers.
you cant either. probably the underlying reason is NOONE CAN COPYRIGHT/PATENT EARTH
so cut the crap.
its a battle between selfishness, self centeredness and will of the people.

THEY DONT SERVE YOU

they have pulled infiltration stunts before. infiltrated organizations, boards to cripple their functionality.
"old" does not mean that the idea is discarded.
M$ has not brought much to the table. In return their marketing department is going to pretend there is community support for OOXML and other proprietary formats.
thats probably the thing they are going for.

silverlight 2 ? what is silverlight ?
if this is what .Net and Silverlight to get recognition, forget it.
a language/framework that is not competitive enough to be recognized by itself will be ok if there is broader support for it ? dont think so.
pls. you know its very funny, even if youre a microsoft fanboi.
Suspicious, wary.
and rightly so too. look at what happened to all those who got affiliated with microsoft in any way.
microsoft has huge negative karma to alleviate.
