Can you imagine what the software landscape would look like today without the GPL, without the FSF and without all the free software that has been licensed under the GPL (both by the FSF and by many other open-source contributors)? Even if many of us continue to use non-free systems such as Windows XP, it is nice to know we have a choice. And we WOULDN'T have that choice anymore if Richard and many others had not stood up when they did.
Today the great man theory is out of favour. Most historians today believe that economic, societal, environmental, and technological factors are far more important to history than the decisions made by any individual. In general there is a belief that history which only follows around "great men", especially when "greatness" is determined primarily by political status, is a shallow view of the past, and additionally one which excludes entire groups of people from being part of "history", including labor forces, ethnic minorities, cultural minorities, and, as the name "Great men" would suggest, women. As such, "Great man history" is, within the historical profession today, usually used as a pejorative term, like the phrase "dead white males".

Oops. I've spent all day chasing a stupid X11 issue, and I'm tired and angry. If possible, please disregard the mindless ranting (not the general point).
So says a long time Slashdotter in about the fifth post.
But yes, you're right: you're waaaaay better than the Slashdot membership. I only hope that I might one day reach your average age and experience, that I too may gaze upon the world as a god. In the meantime, I think maybe we should have a poll to work out just how much worse than you we all are.
FCC story - I know some people swear by evolution but, and stop me if I'm wrong, it's still just a theory. That, and you only disprove a claim that I didn't even make. Remember my main point? That he's been doing this so consistently that I recognise his username?
A comment about Ubuntu networking in a story about BSD driver support, with a title that basically says "I'm not going to be talking about the topic of the story, but..."
it only takes a few selfish people to screw up a system that relies on everyone not looking out for themselves.
You underestimate the power of groupthink. A lot of our apparent viciousness now stems from the fact that our society runs off it. If we didn't run on a system like capitalism, selfishness would not only be considered far less socially acceptable, it would also actually appear less desirable as a result.
It's all completely moot though. It's like some (hypothetical) study revealing that driving on the left side of the road is more conducive to safe driving. Academically it'd be very significant, but switching the world over would be impossible without creating so much unsafety that it would outweigh the benefits.
People are instinctually selfish, and it will never change.
Exactly, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It is precisely because of self interest that others are willing to offer us their goods and services.
I'm not articulate enough to explain just what, but there's something very screwed up in your thinking there. 'Circular logic' sounds like a term that might fit.
How do you do this? I've been coming to this site for almost two years now, which isn't much compared to you, but every time there's an opening to talk about your religion, you're there to tell us what a bunch of dicks we are. I'm not going to take the all-too-easy way and just disregard you as a troll, because perhaps half of your posts seem to be genuine attempts to discuss other matters, and also because your low karma seems to be a result of a campaign of downmods against you at about the 500 mark.
What's the point of all this rambling? I'm literally curious as to how you manage to seek out these conversations so consistently. Doesn't matter if we're talking about Google Earth, the Superman movie, or the FCC, because we can be sure that there you'll be to take each and every opportunity to tell us about creationism or the gay agenda. How? Are you lots of people sharing an account?

Our booty-lovin' friends in Sweden have an interesting tip for anyone wanting to play Quake. It's really interesting information - just visit their website and ask it a question about quake.
I was about to post a reply in that thread, you know, to send a message back and boast about how good our computers are here in the future or something, but apparently...
Sorry... You cannot reply to this topic because it is more than 30 days old or has been closed by a moderator. Please return to the main page.
And I was gonna get so much cred with my 'amazing' Pentium III laptop... anyone know when Google will be implementing this feature?
The point is that this is an area that Microsoft does not produce any dog food to eat in. To distinguish this comment from the dozens of identical ones before it in this story: it's interesting that so many people have raised this point. A few years ago, when MS were more specialised, it wouldn't have crossed peoples' minds that Microsoft shouldn't run a "competitor's" OS on appliances. But they're extending their reach into so many areas these days that people just expect them to have their own embedded OS or whatever the story of the day might be.
Care to back that up? Or is more reflexive OSS-boosting, like "Dia kicks Visio's ass!"?
Wow, how original. Someone on Slashdot attempting to call someone else on software bias. I'm typing this reply with my nose, by the way, as the shock caused to me by your incredible insight caused my arms to fall off. This is in spite of you being half an hour late with this point, and beaten out by someone who actually had something interesting to say about the matter instead of grinding some axe about "reflexive OSS-boosting".
Anyways, it's just my subjective opinion. I find that fonts look worse in Windows than in Linux. If you want balance: the rendering of the rest of the interface seems much shinier in Windows. But I find the fonts ugly compared to bitstream (+ variants).
What a load of crap that comment is. Of course you use corefonts. It's the de-facto standard, it's cross platform, and it's what most people use. You pretty much don't have any other choice.

I'm using it right now. Ubuntu on a IBM Thinkpad X41 is the environment I live in. Ubuntu rocks -- especially with Opera on top! (And Emacs right underneath.)
You're a self-righteous tosser. He's not talking about 'getting what he wants', he's talking about not being conned out of his money by Verizon. And what does "hurting people" have to do with anything, apart from making him sound worse in comparison to you?
In a perfect world, it would be their problem, but I bet Mr. Cafesolo would rather put an "I didn't get my email: Check you spam settings here is how"-type warning somewhere prominent just in case all the same.
Other than, I agree.
No comment ever needs replying to.

Conceited prick.

It's in CVS.

Tempted to smile along with you, but... those are likely your family and friends that you're smiling at.
Analogy time: It kind of seems like laughing when a bunch of people who don't know how to cook get food poisoning.

Flashblocker works on a whitelist system. But then again, you're starting to sound like the sort who'll always have another reason.

Horizontal scrollbar madness! Won't somebody please think of the 800x600 users?!
