Similarly, the fact that I play quake on my linux box doesn't mean I should take umbrage with the good commander for daring to imply that I've got the source code for every package on every computer I own
Of course, you could have the source code for Quake if you so choose.;-)
"SecurID", actually:-) I'm using this with VPN right now but it works with an ordinary old dial-up connection also. I've never timed it but there's 6 bars on one side of the LCD display that tick down, showing you the time until the next number will pop up. Not sure how the algorithm works either, but you can still get in if the last number just expired a couple of seconds ago.

Personally I don't think the default box is so awful. And also IMO, switching to another editor isn't so horrible as you describe. Anything can sound plodding if you describe it in your terms:
Are you saying that first I have to inhale, and then exhale, and then inhale, and then exhale again, and then think about what I want to write, and then move my hands to the keyboard, and then start typing, and then hit the backspace key when I mis-type, and then keep moving my eyes back and forth, and then shift my feet under my chair, and then remember to breathe again, just so I can respond to some inane post on slashdot...
Still, you have a point that we could improve the interface rather than make other people accomodate. However, HTML forms are rather limited which makes the interface designer's job difficult: What about those with 640x480 resolutions for example? The comment box looks a lot bigger on their screens.
I like to share also, but I'm also paranoid. (When will the Napster exploits begin?! When will jack-booted FCC thugs come breaking down my door?!) Besides general paranoia, it seemed like I had strange problems with my cable modem when a lot of people started downloading my files.
So now my napster stays off. Of course, I don't download very much either. Most of my collection came from alt.binaries.blah.blah.mp3.whatever over a 28 and 56K dialup connection. (And what a slow torturous process that was!)
However I seriously question the stability, my experience with Wine has always been never do anything that can really hurt me if the application crashes.
Sounds like WINE is just being true to the Windows experience!:-)
Whatever you do, don't use bigfoot.com as a redirector. I went there tonight to change my password and there it was, in plain text, on an insecure form. I'm pretty shocked that they would be that dumb.
I agree that the Linksys is a great unit - I have the 4-port one myself. One clarification - it doesn't actually have a built-in firewall. It uses Network Address Translation (NAT) which has the effect of acting as a firewall.
A negative is that it is difficult (if not impossible) to host a Quake3 server. I haven't tried to get one going but I know people have had a lot of difficulty with it. You can join Q3A and Starcraft games just fine however:-)
For my Windows machine I also use the free ZoneAlarm software, which allows you to control incoming and outgoing connections.
We get comp time for carrying the beeper. 2 hours for the week you carry it, regardless of calls, and then 1 for 1 comp. So if I spend 8 hours on a Saturday working on a problem, I take a weekday off in return.
You're main point is well taken, but we have to be careful about minimizing problems with free/open source software by claiming that they are free. That maintains a distinction that $commercial software=high quality and free software=bug ridden but don't complain because you didn't pay for it:-)
I know that's not what you meant - probably more that slashdot isn't intended to be industrial strength. Of course it is open source, and it will keep improving due to the efforts of the community. After all, 3 years is pretty young!
99% of the planet wants and/or needs to use this program outside their office. The people that DO use it at work are guaranteed to be using an Exchange server
This is simply not true. We use HP Open Mail with Outlook clients at my work.

And this is exactly what happens when I send messages from work to home. At work I have Outlook 98 client with HP Open Mail. At home I use Eudora - I get a winmail.dat file everytime in my Eudora download directory. Never knew why it was there but it really didn't bother me.
This will most definitely be my last HP burner.

My favorite option in slashdot is being able to turn off sigs :-)
