  1. Re:The blackboard pic on The Argument For F/OSS In Schools · · Score: 1

    looks like the engineering solution

given the material is in supplied in whole units

2+2 = 4 but you need to allow for the cutting loss that would make 4/2 = to 1.99 + 1.99
so the 2+2 needs to be 2.01 + 2.01 = 4.02 to account for cutting, more if you intend to machine the ends
therefor needing it to be longer and you have to round up to the next whole unit hence 2+2=5

in electronics its also true , to make 2 cables at 2 meters long you need the cable longer to allow the ends to be stripped back
allowing the connectors to be mounted so with a 2M cable you would need to account for 40mm or so extra per length so the 2+2 becomes
4.08M and since cable is sold in 1M lengths then 4M would leave you 80mm short so the 4 becomes 5 , hence 2+2=5

there are more cases , like 4+4 = 12 where the length of the item is sold in 12 foot lengths

so although in maths 2+2 should = 4 it is not always the case and quite often has to be bigger

  2. o2 shortage on Driving on Starch · · Score: 1

    it gets me but

burning hydrogen or any other fuel needs O2 also

so given the deforestation needed to grow the starch based fuel , why they looking at other means to produce H2 ,

    its a simple equation

use a fusion reactor based power station to split water into 2(H2) and O2 , burn the pre mixed result and get H2O back , no mess , no 25kg of source material needed for 1kg of fuel , and the waste H2O can be collected and reused , and no nasty chemicals in the process

instead they have to look at a way of producing H2 that has some form of environmental impact
this like the method of using aluminium with another chemical to allow for perpetual oxidization in water to produce hydrogen
so you end up with aluminium oxide and hydrogen , but are then faced with the problem that you trap the O2 in the aluminium then lose more O2 burning the hydrogen

as to power , well its the engine design that needs the work to try to compencate for the losses in relation to what a petrol design would give

a petrol engine needs to be metal because of the presure , a H2O based hydrogen design could be built from ABS , and the rest of the car also , so you don't have to shift around 2 tons of metal , lighter car , and less fuel used , so its not going to give you 500 BHP and do 0 to 120 in 8 seconds , but what use is that when your stuck in a traffic jam doing 2 mph or less because of gridlock

and as to the infastructure to distribute it , well i guess they had gas stations in the USA before the car , and in such a money centric place , it still fails to see a potentitaly money making gap in the market that needs filling , rather can not be bothered investing in new technology that would create new jobs and a whole new industry , rather they expect the only investment is to change the liquid the pumps drip out of the end

and BTW they have been using LPG (gas) filling systems for some time here in the UK so the technology has been around to deliver fuel in gas form for some time

this story only realy shows another way to produce hydrogen in a way that turns a simple no waste proccess into one that produes masses of striped and potentitaly useless biowaste for rather a small percentage of fuel gained

better just sticking a pipe up a cows ass and collecting the methane , and using that to fuel the cars , so you reduce the methane polution produced by the cows and burn it in a usefull process so no real environmental impact , but i guess not vegan safe

i think you need to referance more than christianaty to get the full story
like the numorus accounts of noa and the ark

the story of adam and eve date back and seem to be linked to the story of babilon

bablilon was a place in etheopia , when the aria was lush and plentiful , the king
(who at that time would of been also concideded a god) had a dispute with one of his close
friends , the outcome was that he exiled all his subjects from the land

the story does appear in a lot of cultures , the fact that the cristian version has only adam
and eve (beeing not king/god) and having only 2 sons , seems that only there story of there
endevers survives , but not the others who also had to leave with them

again if the litaral terms of the bible where followed then all of the human population came from there 2 sons
now as one was killed by the other , how did he manage it without any other woman than eve his mum , this again is not open to
debate as its only what is written that matters in the bible if you ask

interestingly genetics also traces the whole human dna to a group of 500 humans who interestingly also originated from africa and close to the area of ethiopia at that , so not just adam and eve but around 498 others at the same time

unfortunatly although the god there was a tirent king not the god as the church would want you to beleve , but the story would of already have been well known of by the average man before they tried to convert to christianty , and was old enough to be legend where the true identaty of the god was as a figure in the shape of man

the bit about man in the image of god , ie god must look like man came about later , this was to put an end to the worship of animal gods , and is also wrong as to what god may look like

evolution well isn't that the way "god" uses to create animals and the other creations ?
just a minute , it does state in genisis that he created them , but does not say how
so if thats the case how can they say that evloution was not how he did it ,
rather than just deny the theory as canot be , when it gives no explanation other than he did it somehow

the failing is that for there view it must of been instant and seperate , not a subtle process that
in its own way like dna itself is the program for life's shape form and function , then the program itself
should know what works and what fails , and a program for life that adapts to the environment , a system that works
in the randomless meaningles un-predictabilaty of the universe and environment , "god" created dna , therefor all life , so they deny that he could of
because there interpritation states it could not be , but by the same token does not give an explanation of how , or do they still think the earth is flat and the center of the universe and the sun orbits the earth

as to genisis well replace day with era , like the correct translation should have been from the original hebrew and its not so bad
it actualy also stops the bible from looking so distroted from the truth , and although it fails to explain how he create things , it sort of
follows how you could describe the big bang theory to the masses , in a way that they would tend to grasp

the truth of the cristian releigion , as jesus says in the bible " beware of those that profess to speak in my name" well thats the current christian faith , that would and during there history have persicuted people for not beleaving it even tortured to death for questioning it ,
no matter what the cost , or if right or wrong and even when it preaches love and forgivness , the failing of all religions , its not the morrals , there good , its the way they turn a blind eye to failing the morrals if you confess , but persicute and punish if you question what is written

its the attitudes like the topic subject that shows how far removed thease people are , shows they are basicaly a sect that by there interpritation of the bible , can only attempt t

then the 2 to 3 mins it takes to turn the ship will also constitute a traveled distance of a few light years in

and some maybe fall into another nearby solar system's gravaty
and get court up in the gravitational pull of any planet there
on arriving there if the conditions of the planet are right the bacteria will defrost
and attempt to continue its life cycle , mutate and evolve and start a new ecosystem

it can take billions of years to actualy reach its destination ,
there has been life on earth long enough to potentialy seed any suitable planets orbiting
some nearby stars in the path the galactic wind would take the particels

now by the same token it is possible that life on earth may have started by the same proccess from life
on a planet closer to the centre of our galaxy and sort of ties in with the current theories that dna
was fromed at a point in the creation of the universe when the earth was still cosmic dust

    it can addapt for
each ecosystem it successfully seeds would by evolution over many milions of years end up with a ecosystem to
    suit the planets environment

it is know that 20 ton's of intergalactic dust that may contain extraterestral bacteria enters the earths atmosphere
every day , both nasa and seti have known of this for some time , but an experiment for collecting and testing for samples
of this dust as not been done yet and it needs to be done in a place where it could not be contaminated by what is getting
    pulled of the earth

the theory is known to be possible as it was discovered quite by accident when bacteria from earth found on a space probe that
returned to earth , had not only survived being in space , but on return was starting to grow as a culture on the item
apparently unaffected by the almost 0 K freezing process

as to seti and radio it could be said that:-

once the airwaves where full of music and people singing
then it just turned to a loud hiss
then noting at all but the background noise

    just made obsolete by progress

and Voyager 1 well when it eventuly gets captured by a gravitational pull of a solar system
and planetary system , it may be greeted by aliens that are the genetic off spring of some bacteria

and having to delve over and down the back of the device to find the proper switch

the led is not the problem 20mA to tell you that the unit is drawing 500ma so it can tell when you press the power button to turn it on is the problem

in a way nomater how you look at it the fact that the led is on is working , as it is getting you to dislike the fact that its on and getting you thinking about the power its using when in standby

as to removing them well that would not cure the problem of power use ,, because theres no led to tell you its on or in standby you would be none the wiser as to if its using power or not ,, now leaving a device on rather than in standby, because you are not aware its on could cost you more over one night than the led would use in 1 year
