    I'm suprised guys. Really, I am.

    These days a "computer literate" person needs a solid understanding of the Internet. Safety issues aside, everyone needs to understand:

    • Email: web based or client software, they have options.

    • Searching: from Google to Lexis Nexis they can find anything, if they know where to look.

    • Netiquette: just the BASICS PLEASE =) =) n0tHiNg Prnl it jst hrtz my @y@z!!

    This debate on privacy and encryption is somewhat moot, given the apathy (or lack of paranoia) displayed by most of my peers.

    What if Hillary Clinton was elected President in 2008? What do you think she would do to the 2nd Amendment, given George W. Bush's prescedence of reinterpretting the Bill of Rights?

    Which will be more "relevant" to "national security" in 2012? Your "privacy rights", or some nutjob arab with an AK-47? This is an easy sell.

    Do you see the game you are playing? Can you even understand how dangerous it is?

    This isn't about Bush v. Kerry, Republican v. Democrat, Red v. Blue. This is about creating the position of king here in America. I never thought I would see the day when a majority of my peers would think this way. I am still simply dumbfounded.

    No one is suggesting the press should have a "get out of free card". What we are saying is that Bush's entire neo-con posse is in for a rude awakening this November.

    The DR DOS example is classic Bill Gates:

    1. State something which is technically foolish (640Kb is all anyone will ever need)
    2. Ignore the market for awhile, wait for someone else to come along and actually *fix* the issue
    3. Beg, borrow, steal. (Ok, ok, no begging.)

    Why is anyone shocked by this guy's behavior? Even before building a 20-year history of "Supreme Weasel" he was dumpster diving and selling other people's software. It's ALMOST as irrational as electing 2 shills from the oil industry to the White House and then complaining about "oil addiction".

    Even if we replace actual actors with CGI clones, or purely CGI characters develop, it will cost $20 million to license their image

    Not if they are developed in house, for use in works created by the owner. I wouldn't be at all suprised to learn that Nickelodeon is already hard at work on this.

    Depends.

    Could a 100% CGI cartoon be developed (including voice) that kids would love and demand DVDs and lunch boxes of? I would say: absolutley.

    Could "live action" CGI replace the stars in "grown up" (ha) movies? IMO: not for another decade, at the very earliest.

    If *I* was the one going into surgery, this is a hard sell to begin with. If I was told the doctor was physically located on the other half of the world, I would most likely run from the room crying.

    Most Indian and Chinese doctors I have met personally practice medicine in New York, and are just as competent as anyone else. I don't care WHO was on the other end, the very idea makes me nervous.

    Just thinking about this I picture the "select a mirror" page on surgeforce, and start scanning for the (missing) "standing next to me" option.

    I think this is a neat idea (although an obvious plant by some marketing parasites) but I have to ask: has anyone tested this?

    Specifically: has anyone recorded a voice, recorded an MRI, and generated a voice? Did they match? Were they close?

    This company was back by MILLIONS in VC money.

    To the disappointment of users, they pulled the plug without any warning.

    Of course, this probably makes me sound like some evil spammer. I am not.

    (at least) two open source projects are in the process of taking over the BF source code. BlackFrog already has a name, other are being discussed at http://bluefrogfanclub.com/ (hosted by Google Groups).

    The comon thinking is that a P2P system is the way to go. As best I can tell, these projects and groups are being run by good people with the best intentions.

    Blue Security on the other hand...

    Then perhaps you might reply to someone else?

    No one is arguing for new laws, nor do I need a TV show to have an opinion. I simply ask my country to respect the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. I was taught that this wonderful document trumps an overzealous President, and I think time will prove me right.

    there is no assumption of privacy on the internet.

    Yes, the government (or anyone else) could sit outside my house, sniff my WiFi, and see this post as soon as I send it. Failing that, this message will be cached a few times between OptOnline and /., and I'm sure *someone* along that path is willing to share.

    Yes, the governent (or anyone else) could walk up to my mail box, read my mail, steal my credit card bills, or simply make confetti with it.

    I *still* expect privacy when mailing a letter.

    I argue that a phone call or email, sent to a specific, single person, was done with a reasonable expectation of privacy.

    The catch-22 is, unless I expected privacy in the first place, I would have no reason to oppose the NSA now.

    Ever considered the amount of data that has to be churned through to build your average custom My Yahoo home page?

    Considered it? Heck, I coded one such system!

    I also paid to host it for awhile, which is exactly why I made sure to take full advantage of the viewer's cache.

    Amazon is huge! Redundant data wastes bandwidth. Bandwidth costs money.

    C'mon Jeff (Bezos)! You are a money guy! You know should know better...
