  1. It's only fair. Apple is touting TM nonsense. on Microsoft Fights Apple Trademark On 'App Store' · · Score: 1

What's good for Microsoft is good for the rest of the world. Microsoft's trademark on "Windows" as an operating system name is problematic at best and Microsoft has lost a few important cases trying to protect this. (Remember the Lindows debacle?) These same cases that Microsoft lost are extremely relevant to Apple's claims.

Considering their own trademark history I can see why Microsoft wants the courts to come down on Apple with their "App Store" nonsense. They have every right to do this and I don't see why we all shouldn't support Microsoft in this endeavor. It will only help us all, not just Microsoft. Besides, what Apple wants is just nonsense!

I say let the large companies battle it out. This is one of the good things about capitalism!

Yes, you are correct about the kernels. However, Windows CE is still "Windows" and it ran on ARM. Also, some .NET applications for the CE platform can run on Windows 7/Vista/etc. (and vice versa) as is (i.e. without recompiling)---further blurring the Windows on ARM distinction.

I know people like to bash Microsoft, but did everyone forget what Windows Mobile and Windows Phone are? They are just mobile (i.e. stripped down) versions of Windows XP. Just like these versions, I doubt that we will see any virtualization that will let you run x86 software on it. Everything will need to be recompiled, just like Windows CE.

Well, that's ok. I am flabbergasted by *your* attitude that a theoretical physics is not part of astronomy. After all, Einstein had nothing to do with astronomy. (roll eyes for sarcastic effect) Einstein's theories on relativity, alone, have altered astronomy and cosmology profoundly.

By the way, I am a scientist/engineer who is very aware is "only so many scientists in the world". I am also acutely aware of how broken the research system is and how myopic researchers can be when looking for new things. Careful evaluation and trying to put the pieces together just doesn't get the grant money.

Sure, science is not a glorious profession, but within the science realm certain activities are more glorious than others. It's hard to piece things together and it's far too easy to simply look at new things all of the time---especially if it makes a pretty grant application.

There are so many things to discuss about this. I just want to extend kudos to Peter Jalowiczor for his discoveries. I also want to extend contempt for the researchers for sitting on their data for years on end.

    As an aside...
I really believe that all government funded research should require that the data be published in a timely fashion (i.e. they are put in a repository that automatically gives everyone access xx weeks after it is collected).

But when a gas company worker puts you to shame by (gasp!) reviewing data that was relegated to the "uncool" pile as you eagerly pen the next grant application, I have to wonder:
Maybe we are spending too much money on some of these astronomers! Maybe scientists need to be a little more frugal and review the data already collected. After all, when Albert Einstein came to Princeton all he asked for was some pencils, paper, and a waste paper basket.
