Yeah but you can write an app to generate javascript in any language. I myself have written some PHP scripts that generate AJAX apps. I could have done it in Python, Ruby, Perl, C++, or even Assembly (if I enjoyed pain).

The only connection that Javascript has to Java is that Javascript was developed at a time when Java was the the big fad. See also Sun's Java Desktop, same situation.

What if instead of a registration form he had an application form? Users would apply for accounts. The application would ask a few questions, one of which is "are you an employee of DirectTV?" If you answer yes to that your application is rejected, otherwise it is accepted. How is this different from what this guy did?

DirectTV employees misrepresented themselves when registering for an account. Is this acceptible?

What if I apply for a credit card and claim that I make $200,000 per year, when really I'm unemployed? Where is it we cross the line of being "just a formality" and being fraud? Clicking a check box? Entering a number into a text field? Or is it just when it costs a big corporation some money?

Maybe, after Google and MS have each spent billions on exclusive deals, MS will come around to Google's original idea of giving users a choice.

People should learn to type in the address bar, spend a few minutes looking for their favorite, and selecting "use current page" for their homepage. Let people think for themselves.

That was Netscape's strategy and look where it got them.

The ship has sailed on that. The defaults are worth money and will be sold to the highest bidder.

I'm sure Google would love the option of only having to just develop a browser and no matter how porr the quality, it will be included on the majority of desktops. But see, they aren't even given that option. Neither is Yahoo. Only MS has an OS monopoly.

I'm sure Google and Yahoo would love it if every browser would pop up and ask the user on first use which search engine he wants to use. But its not going to happen as long as MS is around, so Google and Yahoo have to make deals with browser makers, PC manufacturers, and ISPs.

Sometimes you gotta fight evil with evil.

What should happen is that when a user first starts their browser, they are given an option to select their prefered search engine. If Dell offers to sell the default to the highest bidder, Google, Yahoo, and MS should all band together and say "No that is wrong you should let the users decide." But do you really think that's going to happen?

Yeah its wrong. But if Google refuses to play the game, they just forfeit to MS and Yahoo. Yeah, they can still claim to be moral, but they will be as dead as Netscape.

MS has an OS monopoly. MS is willing to fight dirty. Google can either beat them at their own game, or they can go the Netscape route and launch another antitrust case. Which will be less successful now that MS has bought off all the politcians. So Google has to fight dirty or become another Netscape. Taking away user's choice is and will always be wrong. Exclusive deals used to be against the rules (back when we enforced anti-trust laws), but now they are a part of doing business.

I won't defend Google. I dislike them for playing by the "new rules" (billion dollar exclusive deals). But I dislike MS and Dell even more for making these "new rules" so essential to business these days.

Hate the game not the playa.

I guess the definition of terrorism is different from person to person. To me Terrorism is a form of extortion, one that threatens many people and asks for political or social change as payment. George Bush's definition is anyone who isn't on "our side".

I think this can qualify as terrorism since it is threatening many people and demanding that people just accept spam and not fight back. But some people might say that to be terrorism it has to involve a violent act, which this does not.

At any rate they are uising the same methodology as terrorism.

Actually there's only one command that needs to be typed in on a CLI:

    gksudo "gedit /etc/apt/sources.list"

that will open a config file, add the following at the end:

    deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf breezy free non-free
    deb-src http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf breezy free non-free

Then open synaptic and click the search, type in flash (or w32codecs, or sun-j2re, or whatever).

Yes you have to type in one command to edit one. Compare that to installing a virus scanner, installing firefox (and the flash plugin for firefox), scouring the net for codecs, constantly scanning for spyware, various registry hacks required to make stuff work, etc.

And aren't you going to get calls about a movie not playing, or a web page not working if set up windows for people too? Are they using firefox on windows? Because if it works there its probably going to work on firefox in linux. the w32codecs package probably contains the same codecs that you install on your windows system. No need to install Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Real Player, just install the codecs and either mplayer or xine, and everything will play in one player.

Also flash is only one version behind. I've never had problems playing web games. The next version of flash will be for both windows and linux, so there will be no problems in the future. And I don't get what you mean about playing movies. Its 100 times easier under linux than windows. Just add one line to /etc/apt/sources.list, apt-get install a few packages and everything just works. When you do a system update, all your codecs are updated too.

You're comparing an old version of windows to a modern version of linux in terms of supporting older hardware. You do realise kernel 2.2 is still available, right? You can still get FVWM. Hell, you could even get the latest version of fluxbox or xfce. You could get the code for the old drivers and update them to work in kernel 2.6. You can contact the manufacturer of your hardware and ask them to update the driver, though they probably will just recommend you buy a newer model.

Or maybe you just prefer win98SE over fluxbox or xfce. That's fine, but don't piss on me and tell me its raining. Linux runs fine on old hardware. You just prefer windows, that's all.
