  1. Re:PS3 != Xbox 360 != Wii on Game Publishers Pressuring Sony For PS3 Price Cut · · Score: 1

Install the Homebrew Channel on the Wii via Twilight Hack and you can copy movies and music onto that; I personally stream them to my Xbox, and only my Xbox games (original Xbox) are stored on my hard disk, along with XBMC.

Tell that to my mother, my sister, or anybody who is not computer literate...... The twilight hack may very well be within the capabilities of 99% of slashdot readers but certainly not within the capabilities of 90% of consumers.....

Aside from the lack of Blu-Ray support, XBMC is still a better media player than the PS3, with support for vastly more formats. Since I don't have any HD movies (yet) the Xbox is still serving my needs; it does have 720i/p and 1080i output so it can at least scale - scaling is done by the GPU.

Sweet, what ever works for you. There are plenty of existing media center options that play even more formats than that. I had a nice hacked mac Mini playing my media center role until the PS3 came into the household. All my media just happened to be in mv4 h.264 format or divx which the ps3 supports.

And the consumer can say "That's not worth two hundred bucks" and make the decision for themselves.

Yeah they are making that decision, only based on the difference of the blueray player. There are many more things to consider before deciding one over the other, not just the blueray. For many, the price is all that matters to them and thats their right.

What ? Wii is a great gaming system, and its graphics are not "very poor". This is pure nonsense, but I see where you come from. Or are you saying the PS2 is not a great gaming system, as its graphics are even "poorer" than the Wii's, and it was still outselling the XB360 when it was alone on the "next-gen" market and even after ? The Wii is just as great a gaming system as its competitors actually. No, actually, it's better, and the sales show it.

I love the Wii, wouldn't have purchased one and all the accessories (like the wii fit, guns, extra controllers etc) if I didn't. I did not say the Wii was a poor gaming machine. I just think it is aimed at a different market. The wii untill the the price cuts started happening was the cheapest console. That helped them sell heaps of consoles. Also everybody who got the wii was mostly won over by the simple wii sports game. I was. Also correct me if I am wrong here (I am basing this on a report I read a year ago), the actual games per console sold showed the wii had less games sales per console sold making it a great selling console but not a great game selling console if you get what I am trying to say here.

The only thing that was obvious here was your bias.

I am not biased at all....I use all three of my machines, although the xbox 360 is mostly used because I have more mates that have those than ps3's and I enjoy playing my mates in online games. Nothing competes with the 360 for online gaming.

OK, that's your opinion. But now, for the videogame market, the Wii is clearly the far better system to have in the living room.

Based on what? how is it clearly the far better system to have in the living room? If you read what I actually wrote above and then compare with your reply, it is very obvious you have a clear bias not me. I do believe the PS3 is the best console to have in the living room because of its ability to store media and play media on it straight off the bat. Even my mother knows how to do it when she comes around or borrows it for a movie session. It plays what is supposed to be the next generation of movies (yes we can all argue about whether we will have a next gen disk format at all as high def streaming media and solid state becomes cheaper). I can actually setup my 24 inch iMac as a streaming media server and use the PS3 for watching high def movies over the wireless network. I can then choose to copy them wirelessly to the HD if I want to lug the ps3 around to a friends for a movie session. Yes it is only my opinion, but at least I back it up with a why.

Unfortunately, Sony forgot to tell Sony that they weren't competing with Nintendo and Microsoft, as most of their PR include Nintendo and Sony, most of their comparisons do too. They also forgot to tell every single analyst out there that all still believe that XB360 and Wii are competing with PS3. Even the developers didn't understand that and make games for all 3 consoles, and even more (DS, PSP, PS2). Actually, you and a bunch of other people are the only ones still believing that they're not competing one against each other. I would call you delusional, but perhaps the world is wrong and you're right.

Ouch delusional lol. I am not delusional. I know they are competing in the game console sector, but really are suited for different groups of people so therefor should not be directly competing for their audience.

LOL, the "consumers ignorant eyes" ? It confirms I know where you come from. It's not the consumer's job to go to your product, it's your job to put your product in consumers' hands. The consumers, the market, will then decide the value of your product, and will weigh the value against the price. Some people have a hard time admitting that the Wii has a higher value, and the PS3 has higher value than the XB360. The PS3 has a higher price tag than XB360, and it sells as much with sales aligned, so its value is clear

  3. PS3 != Xbox 360 != Wii on Game Publishers Pressuring Sony For PS3 Price Cut · · Score: 5, Insightful

Own all three. PS3 is a great gaming system with really nice media center features etc. Xbox 360 is a great gaming system with really good online gaming solution. Far superior online system to Playstation network but you pay for it so meh. Wii is perfect for when the mates come around etc or friends or family for a social visit. Its a hit with my young nieces and nephews, but also a hit with my mother so its very popular. However as an out and out gaming machine the wii graphics are very poor but the social benefits of its setup are plenty. Sooo, where am I going with this state the damn obvious here...... Sony's product IMO is a far better system to have in the living room. I mean you can actually copy movies and music onto the damn thing unlike the 360 (yeah I know direct cd import but not mp3 support???) So to me the extra price is actually worth it! Sony are not really competing with Nintendo or Microsoft here as their machines all concentrate on different aspects. PS3 = Home entertainment system Xbox 360 = Gaming system with kickass online play Wii = Family casual gaming fun. So not really competing here in terms of what they are trying to offer. Well the only problem here is that somebody forgot to tell the consumer that they are not competing. They see Call Of Duty World at War on all three systems. To most people they see all three as gaming systems pure and simple and do not know they differences between the xbox 360 and the ps3 and usually go for the cheaper ones. I know the parents who are purchasing the systems do... If you ask a salesman, whats the difference between the Ps3 and the Xbox 360, the most common answer will just be "The PS3 has a built in Blue Ray player which the xbox 360 does not have". In reality there are many more pros and cons that can in use would change their minds about the console they would like. So overall I beleive the PS3 is worth the sale price, but most consumers will not see it that way and they only thing for Sony to do now is drop those prices and try and compete in the consumers ignorant eyes. Well thats just my $2.50, take it or leave it.

I have tried the browser in Windows XP Professional SP2 and all works perfectly fine for me. The browser is quick and responsive.

Now it may be a beta, but the browser seams VERY buggy, too buggy to be a beta (according to other peoples testimonies, not my own experiences). I think apple has missed out on a great opportunity to gain market share here becuase there will be many people who have tried the browser, had major issues, and now will never go back. Yes I know it is a beta! (preempting the hoards).

I also think that the product was rushed to market, and that apple would never have released the browser in this condition had it not been for WWDC 07. I think they just could not get it to the point they would have wanted in time. And I agree with those above who have said the browser exists mainly for testing iPhone Apps in. Time will tell if they made the right decision here.

I would sugegst to anybody out there to wait a couple revisions before really trialling this application unless you are going to use it to connect to trusted websites you already know, or looking to develop for the iPhone.

Now where is my developer copy of Leopard. We non attending Apple Developer Select Members always get made to wait a couple months :(

  6. Re:Apple's priorities are no longer the mac (sigh) on Apple Delays Leopard to October · · Score: 1

    1) Why on earth would anyone delay purchase of an Apple machine until the new OS version comes out? There is no large hardware dependency as there is with Vista. I doubt it is the cost as a new Mac OS variant is not much more than $100. Mac OS X upgrades are notoriously simple to install. So why would this delay of hardware purchase make any sense?

Well it makes perfect sense when you are in a business environment where you need to roll out suites of macs. You are not just talking about rolling a single upgrade here. You are talking about the migration of each users machine to the new machine, which when you have to have IT staff who would otherwise be earning the company $110 an hour , and disruptive to the users having to use that machine not earning the company money. On top of that when Leopard comes, you are handing over more cash for each machine, then you have to roll out the new OS, and any software updates on the machines again. Now everybody is on g5 iMacs or newer, but we want to roll out 24 inch iMacs across the board instead of the 17's. Apple will just have to wait a few more months to get our cash.

American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu has specifically commented on this. In a note to clients on Thursday, Shaw Wu said the buying pause will likely result in sales of between 1.37 million and 1.5 million Macs, significantly less than the 1.6 million units sold during the company's fiscal first quarter ended December. See http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/04/12/appl es_mac_sales_see_slight_pause_ahead_of_leopard.htm l this link for more details.

    2) Perhaps there is a bit more meat to Leopard than you think making it more than worth the wait regardless of iPhone. The company has other ideas about priorities than you do. Time will tell if it was the right choice. But I doubt that delaying Leopard a few months is make or break for Apple. Apple is on a roll.

Ok, lets not get it confused here.... Apple specifically said they took engineers off Leopard development to get the iPhone done, and that was the reason for the delay. So had they not done so Leopard would be done in time. And yes it is OBVIOUS that apple has other ideas about priorites than I do otherwise I would not be here annoyed about it. And no a few months will not make or break apple, but it will annoy many of apple's customers such as myself.

My company is an Apple Select member and have access to the leopard builds etc, and get to see first hand the lack of advancement in leopard. In discussion, myself and fellow testers put the buggy builds down to apple pulling code with their "Secret features", this is not the case, and obviously wishful thinking.

As for the delay of the OS itself, Apple fans are getting to taste a little of the Vista sauce for themselves right now, me included.
  7. Apple's priorities are no longer the mac (sigh)... on Apple Delays Leopard to October · · Score: 2, Insightful

Apple Inc was renamed in January from Apple Computer Inc to Apple Inc to signal Apple's migration from just a computer company to a digital lifestyle device company.

The prioritising of getting the iPhone out over getting Leopard to its loyal fan base is not only a slap in the face of Apple's computer users, but I think a mistake on their behalf.

    Reason 1.
There are a heap of people out there holding off mac purchases until leopard is released. I know my old work (I just left 2 weeks ago) are holding off buying a new suit of macs until Leopard is released because they do not want to have to purchase leopard separately for every machine, then have to roll out etc. This would be disruptive. There is also a couple people at work who are holding off buying new machines for their personal use until leopard is released.

    Reason 2.
iPhone will only be launched initially in the US. Leopard is released worldwide, and therefor a larger userbase to satisfy.

Remember, the press release says that the OS has been delayed to deploy the engineers on the iPhone project. So if they had not done so the iPhone would have been delayed, but Leopard would have been finished earlier. it is not about quality control on the OS for the delay. I just hope this is not a trend where the computer business lags/stagnates because of a focus on getting their lifestyle devices out the door.

Most fruit juices you buy from the supermarket that do have vitamin c, it is usually added to the juice just prior to bottling. So it is not entirely unexpected Ribena has little vitamin c content. However that does not make it right to mislead consumers. The Commerce Commission fined GlaxoSmithKline only $200k, basically to cover court costs etc, but let the consumers decide the real fine to GlaxoSmithKline by making them take out the advertisements. So it is up to you who are reading this to determine if you are going to fine GlaxoSmithKline by not purchasing their product. More alarming to me is that small bottles of sparkling Ribena contain very little if any vitamin C, but they do contain 11 teaspoons of sugar, which is 40% more than a bottle of Coke. However, the major hurdle I see in enterprise adopting Mac OS as their main OS and replacing workplace pc's with Macs is that there is no current Mac OS "Terminal Services" style server implementation. So no thin clients, no centralised licensing control etc. I will be the first to admit (as a huge Mac fan) that windows terminal services in enterprise where most users use solely MS Office, and the likes of FileMaker or Oricle etc works a treat. One thing I have noticed in the games market is that if you can see a killer game in the making and want to make it exclusive to your platforms you do what M$ did and buy the company.

    Example:
Bungie Software - Halo/Oni. Bungie software planend to launch Halo and Oni for Mac OS first and demoed the games at MacWorld. A couple months from the stated release date Microsoft came along and bought the company so they could make these games an Xbox exclusive (Well not entirely exclusive as they eventually were released on Mac OS and Windows, but a console exclusive). As we know these were huge hits for the xbox.

If sony have big enough purse strings they could always try to aquire Square to ensure the FF series stay a Sony Exclusive...

That is just my thoughts anyhow. I own a Wii so I hope they don't. I would like FF on my Wii. I might just have to go buy a PS2 to play the latest FF.
