Because the scaring in the last game did affect gameplay.
You could be the glorious hero, full of light and wisdom, but you were so damned fugley by the end game that the towns people would run away from you.
Not to mention the fact that some people DO care what their character looks like, even more once you go online, a name isn't always enough to make you unique.
Go look at wow, how many lvl 70s look almost the same and are the same right down to the enchants, the talents, and the equipment? Its not pretty and it gets really annoying really fast.
People want unique characters, this is part of that to an extent.
He has vision... but he can't seem to bring it to fruition.
I don't believe a damned word he says anymore, most;y because he can't seem to tell us when he is talking about his glorious vision, and he can't seem to tell us when he is talking about what the game is actually going to be like.
I used plate/mail and I was still all kinds of fucked up. Though my old guy just looked freaking badass in the white magicians outfit. He freaking pulsed power.... to bad the towns people were really scared of him because i screwed up the prison escape 6 freaking times...
The only ones that really bug me are the "hardcore" gamers.... who play either madden, counterstrike, Wow, star craft... or any game exclusively. Then there are the ones who spend more time bitching about what game is better or how all the new games suck, then they actually spend enjoying the games they hold so highly. Actually I just hate all the asshats who claim to be hardcore gamers then act like it makes them an authority any game.
When ever someone say "I'm a hardcore gamer", I have the urge to kick them in the teeth.
Maybe I'm wrong but aren't many of the low poly characters in games just simplified from original high poly models. Doesn't normal mapping take that high poly high quality render, the simplify it, then using lighting tricks give it the appearance of the high poly model, while being significantly similar?
Maybe I'm wrong again, but making those high poly models isn't easy either.
Make a game where it starts structured, but allow players to integrate into that structure, let them become the structure. Let the first players run around during the semi calm before the storm. Once you think they are ready, usher in the storm, have a major NPC leader get assassinated, preferably by a player, possibly one who doesn't know that he just started a chain of events, hell make him the games unwitting Gavrilo Princip.
Then watch, when you need to shape events using your game masters (Who are some type of super advanced or super magical race which likes to fuck with those below it, heck make them killable too, cause that would be one hell of a hunt). Let them impersonate players, assassinate leaders (Player ones). Get the players into position near the top, but not on top of the major factions, leave that position to be filled by a company employee, an AI or both.)
Let the players drive the universe, but introduce things into it and see how they deal with them. Lie, steal, kill, impersonate, and manipulate the player politics to keep the game going when it needs to be done.
Well why not wave the bird at photorealism then eh?
Wow that pile of crap looks photo realistic.... but its still just a pile of crap.
There are other things you can do to improve the graphics without moving an inch towards photorealism. Don't make each frame more realistic, make each frame more detailed.
The issue with that is though, a heavy MAC round should destroy your, or at least severely damage your ship, other wise... well it would feel silly to me, I mean wow, you have just made another MMO that is different weapons different wrapper, but in the end the experience is the same. You fight you die, respawn grab something else to kill with and run right back in. I want it to mean something when that nice big Cruiser you just got command of suddenly has a giant hole where engineering used to be. I want you to think, "Damn that was rather short lived...." Then you start your characters ass towards the nearest escape pod.
I think MMO's need to move in multiple directions, some games need to exist for the people who want a more forgiving game, some need to exist for the people who want that more tense experience.
When I say math I mean some really basic algebra. Ex, you put your ship into a slow roll, that way you always have a loaded gun facing your target, and by the time a weapon is facing the target again, it has already loaded.
I'm also hoping on the off chance that bandwidth gets cheaper, processing power gets a whole lot cheaper, Ai gets better and easier to tailor to your needs, digital distribution becomes the norm, and things occur that allow dev teams to get a tad smaller... just a tad smaller.
I you close your eyes and wish hard enough it happens right?
Ideally this would be the crowning achievement of a stunning career in the games industry (Basically a snowballs chance in hell). I do realize that its not exactly realistic under the current environment in the industry. I also seriously doubt I'm the first person with delusions of grandeur like this, I'm just not sure if I should hunt the others down and kill them or ask them if they want to do something that could result in a career ending fiasco.
I want to see if I really do have anything unique to add to the pot, and if it doesn't work out I'll take my degree and go work in another industry, unlike my friends who are getting game design degrees... and are fucked if it doesn't work out for them.
My only concern would allowing it to be a game that you could play, but didn't have to be on all the time. Of course that also messes up my semi perma death mechanic...
Does that make the pot wrong?
I believe I have some teeth to kick.
I loved fallout... but I've moved on.
I had no lower jaw, bones sticking out were the least of my aesthetic problems. I could only ever look good if I wore a mask.

They're laboratory mice....
Not to mention very close together... where the hell did my nose go?
... oh boy, the "age of recreation"
Um.. Fuck that Noise?
Okay, since I can't tell what type of tone you are using... I'll give both of my possible responses.
1: You couldn't detect the obvious sarcasm.
"Dude.. I was being sarcastic"
2: You did detect my obvious sarcasm.
"Of course, its a problem with exploration on a budget in general".

damnit
You know your right, no one has ever died under the watchful eye of NASA.
Sorry, they still have a couple of years on the lease.
Anyone with a vague Idea of how an OS works?
If you close your eyes and wish hard enough, that shouldn't be an issue.

All eve needs is more players and an ever growing number of star systems to explore.......
but thats just my opinion.

Yeah, and it leave your skill all smooth and silky too!
I'll stick to my surefire tactical light. Its nice small, and is actually effective as a bludgeon if need be.

There no way in hell Im waiting that long.
Now I just need to find a horde of angry, yet easily manipulated people and it will be time to put my plans into action.
