Either by chance or personality type, the IT field workers lack one important thing. It may be because of the independent nature, whatever. I'm not a head doctor - i don't know but I do see it. In one word?
Funny enough, many of the people who are free-market evangelists (for lack of a better term) have no problem with the things you cite.
I'd go off on a rant about it but I'd be preaching to the choir - at least in your case. (Having conversed with you before.) But, seeing as you're here... I wonder if mental gymnastics should be an Olympic sport. Or, perhaps, if politics (not just American) are the Mental Gymnastics Olympics®...
It's televised, it's every four years in my country (for the big one), it's got corporate sponsors, it's got back-story, it's got doping and cheating and intrigue... Hmm...
There's a Kurt Vonnegut-type of novel in there somewhere. Maybe Tom Robbins.
IIRC that suit was because it was seen as breaking the Union - was it not? I don't think it had to do with the employees being less expensive, in particular, so much as it was about Union regulations and moving to "break" a union is illegal.
That's the gist that I got from it when it was on NPR when it was still news.
It's amusing that you mention that. I'm in the 1% (globally, so aren't you - but I'm sure you mean some other 1% - the one that doesn't include you). Without knowing of this thread, of this comment, of this sentiment - in the last thread, the one about book prices in Uganda, someone mentioned that it would be easy to acquire a shipping container full of books.
I offered to ship it there if they were willing to do the leg work - I'm pretty sure I can get them a donated shipping container too.
I don't want to feel like I'm scolding or talking down to a child so I'm going to be polite and don't take this as if it is patronizing. It is not meant to be.
The adage about painting with a broad brush? That's because when you paint with a broad brush you end up missing the finer details. That's what that adage is about.
It's like the insane hate against corporations. The Linux Foundation, BSD Group, EFF, ACLU, and countless others - including for-profit, with share holders but not necessarily publicly traded, are all different types of corporations. I once asked an AC, while they were spittle flecked and ranting, if they meant all corporations and they indicated in the affirmative. I then pointed out the many different types.
They then had the temerity to say, "Fuck you." We can fix ignorance - it's not always the fault of the individual due to time or bad instruction. We can even work on stupidity. What we can't help is willful ignorance.
You realize you just argued akin to, "I don't like it, I'll use my own definitions." And then meandered off on an entirely unrelated tangent without actually having understood any of the Wikipedia article that you decried? Sheesh...
The problem is when people confuse Libertarianism, the political ideology, with an economic model. The next problem is the assumption that everyone is binary and an extremist/zealot.
An example would be that I strongly support single payer health care - because it's cheaper for us in the long run and we all bear the costs regardless. Kind of like I support a strong social safety net because it's cheaper to feed someone than it is to hire goons to stop them from stealing my shit. I like my shit - that's why I bought it. I want a small, but strong, central government with individual States to have a greater autonomy. And yes, it's possible for the government to be the central payer for health-care without them being oppressive, invasive, or controlling.
It's a fine line and would require an educated and active citizenry so it's not going to work. Realizing that, I'm willing to settle somewhere in the middle but I definitely believe there are a whole series of lines that need to be redrawn. The greatest way to enjoy your liberty is to be able to take advantage of it. That requires upward mobility and comes with a shitton of personal responsibility. 'Snot going to happen but it's a lofty goal and a noble goal - and something to strive towards.
I'm a pragmatic person, I suppose. I've typed it all out in detail before but I'm way too apathetic (stoned) right now. I also think you'll find that the majority of Libertarians are much like myself - it's just that we're not the noisy ones. We're the ones who have been with the party since the late 70s. We're the ones that know we've got a whole bunch of idiots running around usurping the title but are really just ashamed Republicans trying to use the moniker in hopes that nobody notices. It's a bit antithetical to tell to shut the hell up.
The idea that any one "pure" political model can work is silliness. While my party does have more than its share of idiots, they're much like those in any other party who are zealots too stupid to acknowledge that zealotry and extremism is never a good idea. They finished half of Atlas Shrugged and have somehow confused Libertarianism with a combination of anarchy and and corporatism.
What they don't realize is that Ayn Rand was an idiot and Rand Paul is not a Libertarian. Sanders is more my ideal candidate than any other candidate that's truly on the national stage. And no, he's still not my ideal candidate. He's just the closest to it.
Hmm... It's probably not that expensive to ship a container. I've a buddy in the Norfolk, VA area who is sort of in the business so I might be able to get a free/donated container. I've shipped a Honda to Japan and back for restoration but I'm pretty sure a container full of books will weigh a lot more. Still, it can't be that bad. If you ever actually get a container's worth of books and really want to ship them there, I would be willing to help with that.
Note: I've been to a few African countries. You're gonna need bribe money - even for books. I also have no idea how you get a container from the coast all the way in to Uganda. I'm sure someone knows how to accomplish it. But yeah, if you ever seriously get a container of books then I'll help you get them as far as the coast. Someone else can help the rest of the way. (We can call it the Slashdot Literary Express.)
It can't be *that* expensive to ship a container to Africa from a major port on the East Coast. I've spent money on far more stupid things. Much, much more stupid things... Also, it's gonna take bribe money - I'm not kidding about that. It's partially morbid curiosity - how does one get a container full of books to Uganda? It's probably less than 10k to ship the container so you don't really need "a couple of rich dudes" to do this. If you're serious and want to do some leg work, the email address works. I'll be going back through the VA area at the end of this week or the start of next week so I can stop in and beg for a container for you - he's got a yard full of 'em. (No, not that kind of yard. He owns a small trucking company.)
I'm pretty sure he's got no idea how the courts work and has never heard of "prosecutorial discretion." There's always a choice. It might not be a politically feasible choice but there's always a choice. It is, after all, the DA that serves as prosecution for the State. I'm not fluent in all of the Floridian regulations but I'm thinking that the Supervisor of Elections is probably not also the District Attorney, or even an assistant.
However, it is Florida. I could be wrong.;-)
Still, there is discretion. The State may choose to not bring charges and has done so many, many times in the past. Read your local court news to see which cases were simply dismissed. Many of those will have been dismissed due to the DA opting to not prosecute for any one of a number of reasons. Better still, go to the courts and sit there, in person, and witness it and see it in action for yourself. While folks are there, they can learn about the proceedings and watch to ensure that the justice being done in their name is actually 'just' and not 'just us.'
The court doesn't have to let him go but a jury can nullify.
That's not going to happen but, damn it, they have that power. It's Florida. They can't even spell 'hack' never mind 'white-hat.' (I'm in Florida and have been since December. I kind of like the place and most of the people are pretty cool. Just like everywhere else.)
I am still in Florida so I'm getting a kick out of this thread!
No, not really. In Bay County, Florida you do not need to pass an inspection in order to put a vehicle on the road. I really should start taking pictures... I've seen swamp buggies on 4 lane traffic. And we're talking the kind that are the platform that's about 6' off the ground, has a railing on it, and has bus seats bolted/welded to it and the driver sits in the middle-front. It's got a ladder to get on it - you don't get in it.
Spring Break... Panama City Beach is home to the original Spring Break and it is still heavily used for such purposes. There are a lot of college girl titties, which is nice, but they have one week they call "FAG Week." FAG is Florida, Alabama, Georgia. That's the week when they make the news. It was fairly tame this year and nobody died - that I heard about. Still, there was Beach Patrol chasing a guy in a big ol' 4x4 truck across my beach. My house is way over near the gated communities and I've got my own private beach and whatnot. They go tearing up through, during FAG week, only to go tearing back the other direction a few minutes later. They were on 4 wheelers - he was in a (pretty sure) '78 Chevy step-side. I kind of doubt they caught him - but I'm MILES from the touristy section.
There has not been one day that I've gone out and not seen something remarkable. To be fair, I did have some/.ers over for NYE explosions so we were potentially the remarkable on that one night - I spent enough on fireworks to where I could have actually bought a new car with that same amount of money. The food and drink was cheap, comparatively speaking - but we had fun and nobody got hurt.
That last bit, that nobody got hurt, that's the important bit. Somehow, Florida does all this and remarkably few people get hurt. You'd think they'd all be dead by now - they've all got firearms, that's also salient. By all rights, the State of Florida should have maybe a half-dozen people still living in it. But no, they're a resilient bunch and somehow manage to survive this insanity.
I'm going home soon - I've been here long enough. Probably this week but I keep putting it off as I've still got one pressing matter to attend to and I'm still hoping to get permission to go to Cuba but that does not seem to be likely. Still, I'm not sure how it manages to function as well as it does. I've seen cars without doors (or even windows). I guess they can take your car off the road if the cop deems it unsafe by some metric - what that is, i do not know. What the threshold is for that, I have no idea. I assume it has to be on fire and covered in spikes - also with a 5000 gallon tank of gasoline on it, before they'll consider it not roadworthy.
I don't know how to fill in the blank but, suffice to say, Florida's kind of special in its own way.
What makes you think that Somalians aren't taxed? I suppose you're one of those that thinks they don't have any government?
WTF do you think a WARLORD is? Do you really think think they don't tax the populace? Do you even try thinking for yourself or do you just parrot stuff? Seriously, go visit Somalia. They're probably the most over-governed and over-burdened by governance country on the planet. Just because you don't recognize them as legitimate does not mean they're not government. Just because you're unaware of what is taken from the civilians doesn't mean it's not a tax.
Seriously, though - go visit. You'll learn something. You'll also find that people are pretty much people - no matter where you go.
The funny thing is, the Somalians are governed much more than most other nations. I know, I've been there. They've got enough governance for a dozen nations that are twice their size. They've more government than you can possibly imagine, unless you've been there.
It's complete with taxation, bureaucracy, paperwork, and (some) method of redress. It's not officially recognized government. It's probably not what you'd call legitimate government. However, it's right full of government - often with distinct borders and spheres of influence.
Anyone who suggests Somalia is a place without government is retarded. If anything, they're way over-governed.
What, exactly, do they think warlords are? There's a whole lot of stupid people who simply parrot things they think make them sound witty. Never mind that they've nary a clue about Libertarianism and won't actually take a few minutes (literally) to learn about it. They confuse an economic model with a political ideology and think they're smart. They're about as smart as Ayn Rand, which is to say stupid.
I'll spare the world my rant but I've got one prepared - just pretend I typed it out and that it was witty and insightful and stuff. Oh yeah, it was funny too. *sighs* I'm not sure if it's apathy or laziness - or both.
Heh, I'm a happy Linux user and I really don't give a shit what OS other people use - I don't even care what distro they use if they do use Linux. I picked what worked best for me and my needs and I'm happy with it being the tool I use to get shit done.
I don't really hate to admit it but I pretend I do. I actually like my Windows Phone. I still have 8 but I can get 10. It's snappy for as few resources as it has. I've had no problems. It has plenty of apps - it just doesn't have 8473 versions of a flashlight and 9803 versions of Candy Flappy Bird Crush IX - Revenge of the Flying Pig.
Yeah, the other is playlist - that's excellent. You can also get a start on some good automatic selections by selecting long (at Google's video search) and heading into YouTube that way. I do allow it to track an account (it's not my name or anything and I only allow the cookies there and only allow the tracking scripts there) so it appears to actually have figured out that I prefer full documentaries.
The 'net has been a great thing for me in these regards.
Funny you mention the books-on-tape - I was just mentioning that to Jason Levin here the other day, in some thread or another. It's a great way to get in some 'reading' when you don't actually have time. I find it a little distracting while driving but it's not too bad if I'm either out in a rural area or if I'm on a freeway and outside of traffic.
Fortunately, I guess, I could rely on my car to warn me of any dangers and actually zone out a little but I don't do that - I'm too much an enthusiast to do so. 'Tis a long story so I'll skip the details but, suffice to say, I own a bunch of automobiles and have taken a great deal of advanced driving instruction - in multiple, disparate, geographic locations. So, I don't do that but I could... Even on 'boring' drives i still pay attention to the road but some books are more difficult to do that than others.
Still, it's a great way to get in some extra stuff. I've been thinking about seeing if I can just find a way to get text-to-speech and then have it crunch and record it so that I can put any text material into a computerized voice. It'd be missing inflection but I'm okay with that. There are a lot of things that haven't been read aloud and recorded but I'd still like to have time to absorb. My reading time is cut short these days.
They have had block lists for the P2P file systems for ages. i don't know how well they work or anything but they exist. They're supposed to stop you from sharing with people who work for the companies that find people who are violating copyright laws - including some companies that specialize in that.
I imagine it'd be marginally effective but it's pretty easy for them to get a new IP address and just pretend it's located anywhere in the world.
Hmm... Do a Google search for:
"block federal government IP addresses"
That turns up some interesting results - including a data dump of IP addresses. I guess we could set up a honey pot aimed at attracting the feds. "Free bribes and donuts. Click here!" Then just assume they're all police or government representatives.
Great minds think alike. I mean, we're just raising awareness for a cause, right? Right? Right...
*whistles innocently*
We can even get credit cards in the corporation's name. Have it held by lawyers so we get an added degree of protection from disclosure.
Yeah, we're going on a list. I doubt it's a crime but we're gonna have to fly charter everywhere we go and our stops at customs are going to be extra long and have a few extra questions. But hey, we'll be famous!
Enjoy your visit from the Secret Service. Dumb ass. All you're doing is making the new owners dig out an IP address from the database when they come ask for it. And no, no they're not going to make the Secret Service go get a warrant when you say stupid shit like that. It'll amuse me greatly if they don't even take you serious and just come to your house and cock-punch you a half dozen times and then just leave.
Yeah, Trump's got SS protection now. He also has his own security but he's certainly got SS assigned to him. I don't know if it's a criminal act that you've committed but it's gonna get your ass on a list - and you'll complain about being on the list and claim it is an injustice. Really, I hope they just cock-punch you - preferably in public.
And no, no I don't like Trump. It's tempting to vote for him because I also don't like you. Alas, there are good people so I won't do that. I'd vote for Trump if he picked Sanders as his running mate. It would be the most epic political troll of all time and I'd have to participate in that. Still, here's hoping you get cock-punched.
I hate to argue but I like your definitions just fine.;-)
What I really dislike is the folks who just assign anything they don't like to "Libertarian." I realize they don't know any better but is it really that hard to look at, say, just a Wikipedia article and realize how very wrong they are?
*sighs*
I'm a Libertarian. I'm further left that any elected official on the National stage in the US. Why people seem to think Libertarians want to give power to corporations (or even additional rights) is beyond me. It's as if they were brainwashed. Once, we were the kooky left and now we're the crazy right - and yet my political beliefs haven't changed at all.
I've actually had a discussion, here on Slashdot, where the person *refused* to look at Wikipedia and asserted that they knew what a Libertarian was and that they knew my politics by title alone. There's not much that can be done for willful ignorance.
> Slave or master, choose now ...
False dichotomy! I choose "cable select."
(No, I'm not too proud of that but it was there and I had to. I'm sort of sorry but not sorry enough to not post this.)
Either by chance or personality type, the IT field workers lack one important thing. It may be because of the independent nature, whatever. I'm not a head doctor - i don't know but I do see it. In one word?

Olsoc... That's the most tortured logic I've seen from you in a while. I'm half convinced you're trolling. ;-)

Is it women or minority owned? 'Cause I'm a minority. Sucka!
Where do I submit my bid?
Holy shit! I didn't think of that! Arrest that man!
He'd have to do it on paper. His calculator just displays zero when he does it.
And he WAS doing it on paper... You just might be on to something.
I hate to argue but I like your definitions just fine. ;-)
