First, they probably don't make you rich. Life insurance payouts sound like a lot of money but actually for most of us the majority will get spent on the funeral. Body disposal (at least legal body disposal) is expensive. Arguably this wouldn't be much of an issue for astronauts who die in space but it is important to the rest of us and doesn't invalidate the next couple of points.
Second.. it was 1969. How many wives had jobs? Before we had insurance widows lived a hard life. There is a reason that in India they had Sati. This isn't as much an issue today, today they just work. Still, if there are kids it is hard to raise a family on a single income. With most couples both working people have 'more' money thus goods are more expensive. Good luck raising a family on a single income.
Maybe most importantly... insurance companies SHOULD make your family rich or at least pay them well because during life you make THEM rich. Life insurance premiums cost money, even if you aren't paying them directly if you are ensured then somebody is. Probably your employer is paying them on your behalf. That money is for one thing and one thing only... saving for the future when it is needed. If they don't pay out then what were they being payed for in the first place? Why should insurance companies get free money any more than the rest of us?
Actually for several decades now most sewage treatment plants have been separating out all of the solid particles and what can be is used for fertilizer. You can even go into some stores and buy bags of dried, treated sewage to use as spread on your lawn! My dad used to do it when I was a kid. It said so on the package but you could definitely tell exactly what it was when it got wet! I think they baked it or something like that to kill all the bacteria and make it safe first. I stayed far away from the lawn for a week or two whenever he did it but the grass loved it! It got very green very fast!
Right! Because if the 'feature' in question is bad for your 70 year old aunt then it is bad for everyone and nobody should have it available to them! Do you work for Apple? Or maybe you are a Gnome developer? That's the attitude that is really making computing start to suck!
A better way is two options. An OS for your aunt and an OS for someone who better knows what they are doing. Everybody gets the environment they want and we can love hate or be indifferent to each of them as we please.
That still sucks. Best is one OS with multiple modes, one for your Aunt where all is simple and the corners are padded. One for the geek where the geek can be master and make his computer exactly what he wants. Switching between these modes should be simple enough to the geek but hidden deep enough that your aunt will not stumble into it. You know.. that is kind of like switching desktop/window managers isn't it? This way both get to benefit from the same software and hardware development. New programs and hardware that come out WILL run on the one OS.
Best yet... if you think you can write a better review then STFU and do it already!
Wow, I'm actually shocked at all the snarky non-answers. At least for a question as geeky as this I expected better, I guess Slashdot really has gone downhill.
You could build a Pirate Box! I did that w/ my old Android.
One other tip... Ask this on Hack A Day, not Slashdot!!
Yes but the intelligence, ability to solve problems and general sanity of any group of human beings goes down, not up as the group grows. Just watch what happens as any small business becomes a large one and see if you disagree.
First, who elected the government?
Second, Didn't those monopolies begin with people not wanting the precious view of their communities ruined by too many wires running on too many poles? Sure... no doubt those monopolies are more than entrenched enough now to simply buy any politicians that might try to change thins but it was the town halls, community planning organizations, etc... who made that happen in the first place. And those are mostly made up of and supported by all the ordinary citizens that live in those communities.
Ok. That version makes sense if it happened that way. But you see, it's a little more complicated than just 'they agreed on one thing' and he did another'. That explanation begs the question of why she allowed it. This version pretty much explains that.
I thought that was the point of Gnome, or at least has been for the past 10 years or so... to be difficult to customize because the masses don't like having a lot of options. If you wanted a bloated desktop that you can't customize you used Gnome. If you wanted a bloated desktop that you can you use KDE. If you want a super minimalist environment where you can't even add a menu item without editing a text file.. likely not really a text file but rather some perl or python script that generates a text file on the fly, created not by the desktop/window manager writer but rather by whoever last packaged it for your distribution and therefore not quite matching anything you ever could hope to find in any search engine results... then you use your pick from everything else.
I really don't get this. Did the women not feel the difference? Did they not look down there? Do they like to have sex only with their eyes closed or what? Either they went right along with the condom-free sex or they would have been saying no, trying to get away, etc...
If they had a verbal agreement to use a condom beforehand but in the heat of the moment didn't then does that mean he raped her? If she went along with it then accusing him of rape seems extremely sexist to me. No.. it just is sexist. Unless she didn't go along with it... in that case there was a lot more obvious rape happening than just the lack of a condom.
Ok, first, I think this is all just as ridiculous as about anyone else here. But...
Can somebody explain to me all the gloom and doom about losing scientific / technological leadership that gets dredged up every time creationism is mentioned? Myself, I'm a programmer by trade and consider myself a maker by hobby but I can't remember ever seeing the evolution of man in a schematic diagram. How exactly do you solder that into a circuit? Or is it a mechanical engineering thing? How many gears does your evolution have, does it mesh with that cog? Are medical researchers digging up australopithecus remains and dumping chemicals on them looking for reactions in order to find a possible drug for humans? I suppose there are evolutionary algorithms in software sometimes but even a creationist can just dismiss them as man-made, not natural and happily code away.
Yes, there is definitely an anti-science, anti-intellectual climate in the US. I don't think creationism is a cause. Maybe a symptom... Maybe.. but not a cause. I don't think it is limited to any geographical area, social class, city/urban, etc... I suspect there are far more people who just don't give a shit and are far more interested in celebrity gossip, reality tv or how drunk they are going to get this weekend than any debate over science/creationism or even the technological/scientific progress of their country. Maybe you get more of those people outside the Bible belt. For that matter, is this even limited to the US? I doubt it very much though the symptoms may vary from place to place.
If they had any balls they would assign an MI6 agent or some other secretive person to go work with the Ecuadorians and just sneak him out (to Ecuador) in the middle of the night. Then they would claim ignorance as to how he escaped. No, I'm not saying they should do this because they have any interest in Julian Assange's well being.. I'm saying they should do it because then he is no longer their problem and they aren't stuck between US interests and international good will.
" (Am I the only person on the planet who sees Assange to be an irritating culturally inept bully?)"
Bully? I'm not sure about that. Please do explain.
Culturally inept and irritating.. No, I think most of the world sees that, some may be in denial.
Julian Assange definitely has his faults. We could certainly have wished for a better spokesman for open information. Unfortunately... Assange is what we have in a time where such a spokesman is very sorely needed. Bradly Manning and others who gave him documents as well as anyone who chose not to take the risks he did have put him in that place. Unfortunately, as full of faults as he is I don't think we can afford not to ignore those faults right now. Bring on the denial!
Let me add to that.. we are screwed if we are at or get to the point where we need an armed uprising. I'm not necessarily convinced that is necessary yet. If people just stopped voting for these two entrenched parties... If people stopped blindly thinking their side is right, actually looked at everything that is going on and voted accordingly...
Of course this is never going to happen. But then.. if there was an armed uprising it would have to come from these same people that are the voting public today.
"The only way you're winning that sort of fight is if the military itself splits, and some proportion of it backs the uprising."
Sadly this is true. But think of the day after... I don't care how well meaning that portion of the military that joins the uprising is... Suddenly they are in charge with no constitution and all the weapons. They are going to be very tempted to keep the power and be corrupted.
I really don't know why but as I read your comment in my head I read it with the voice of Bane. I hadn't been reading any other's that way. But this one just seems to 'sound' good.
only 35?
And in doing so teach our kids to do the same to us some day?

Yes but the intelligence, ability to solve problems and general sanity of any group of human beings goes down, not up as the group grows. Just watch what happens as any small business becomes a large one and see if you disagree.
Too late! Homeland Security already bagged him.
The government is FULLY to blame?

Possibly buy how can anyone but the three of them know that

That's how Egypt came to the Nile in the first place.
How will those poor people of the Central Valley in California possibly find the resources to move themselves?

Why should my download of some Linux iso via bittorrent be slowed down while you hog all the bandwidth watching Nyancat on Youtube?
