Sure, Sony/BMG never put a rootkit on your computer after legally purchasing music from them. I don't pirate, or condone pirating, but plenty of people have been burned even when doing things completely legally.
The monopoly lies in the fact that he has to use dial-up. TFA reads to me that for high speed internet service, Verizon is the only game in town for this man. Unfortunately this is the case for millions of internet users.
It would be better to live within your means and have a parent stay at home and provide schooling
I hear you on that one. My wife teaches our 10 year old daughter at home. We have felt that it is the best in the long run, because we can tailor her learning to her individual learning style. We also get the added benefit of picking the curriculum. I was actually quite suprised at the number of high quality teaching texts available, which public school systems seem to ignore (probably through sheer laziness of the purchaser). My daughter has the advantage of being able to take science classes with marine biologists at our local aquarium, as well as ecology/botany classes with a wildlife biologist at a local state park.
The issue of one income is a tough one, however I was fortunate enough to A.) never had two incomes (she went to college, then we had a child) and B.) I make a decent living.
I think public schools are just becoming free daycare centers. I am in the fortunate position of having friends who teach in the public school system, at the elementary and high school level, and it makes me thankful that my wife is passionate about teaching our daughter. The problems they have with school administrators/parents/children are unbelievable. It seems that schools are more interested in not getting sued, than actually teaching children.
To anyone in this forum thinking about homeschooling your children, I say it is rewarding, but check your local laws. Some States, here in the US, are quite hostile towards homeschooling, and other States are quite supportive.
At my company, I had to install the IE7Block company wide. Unfortunately one of our primary applications (Primavera Expedition) will only work with IE 6.0, not Firefox, not IE 5.5, not Opera. They wrote the app in both Java and ActiveX. Running the web app with IE7 (any version) causes a C++ runtime error and immediate abort.
I personally use/have been using Opera for around a year now. I love the browser and recommend it to everyone, however for this particular application IE6 is a must, unless we are willing to flush a major business app down the toilet.
"Sorry, but this browser does not support web word-processing.
We have heard loud and clear that many of you really want it to work, and we have discussed the problems with their development teams. In the meantime, please try us on:
FireFox: 1.0.5 or higher
Internet Explorer: 6.0 or higher
Mozilla: 1.5 or higher
All of these are FREE and easy to download and use.
If you are working to fix problems with a specific browser and would like to bypass this check, just add &browserok=true to the end of the Google Docs & Spreadsheets url.
Please note that it is a violation of intergalactic law to use this parameter under false pretenses, so don't let us catch you at it.
And, it won't work very well -- really."
Although I find Firefox fine, I prefer Opera (I'm using 9.02). I never, well almost never, use IE, some sites (Banks - I'm looking at you) require IE.
The whole point is I find the "Opera not supported" to be a frustrating development.
Why companies can't just say what's really going on I have no idea, but I guess once you get used to lying it just becomes your natural response to everything.
Well there is that whole pesky shareholder responsibility thing. They aren't exactly lying in so much as stretching the truth so as not to hurt the company image thereby devaluing stock prices.
I have been long considering a society of very long lived people through the use of nano technology. I have envisioned nano bots injected into a person to be used for "maintenance" of organs that fail over time. I always thought these bots could be programmed to roam our body and kill off viruses, bad bacteria, and cancer cells as well as repairing failing organs and using our fat cells as an energy source, thereby keeping us thin.
My wife has always said a weapon would be developed long before any life enrichment uses. We have seen a steady flow of nano technology in the last decade or so, I just hope global nano terrorism is not just around the corner.
What's the deal with the Harry Potter reference? I mean you went through the trouble of posting the entire article just to slip in a *spoiler* about Harry Potter?
Kinda lame if you ask me.

They decided to open a Porn Appreciation Course, citied in TFA http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_3158640.html?menu=news.quirkies
I stumbled upon a website showing all the Presidents' religious affiliations. http://www.adherents.com/adh_presidents.html Enjoy

Thanks a lot for the link to that article. Those are precisely the reasons my wife and I choose to homeschool our daughter.
If I had mod points, I would spend some here.

The reason is simple. Every State in the US has a different sales tax rate.

I don't like it but I can't change it.
