"Apple should get out of hardware" -- of course, because the iMac, Macbook Pro & Mac Pro are such obvious engineering flops. [sarcasm] I suppose the logic is that since many PC manufacturers are trying to mimic Apple's external design sense, that Apple may as well let them carry the torch.
Also, given the extreme reliance on Apple hardware & software in the design, entertainment & media industries, I don't ever forsee this happening. I attend an art & design school & the ratio of PCs to Macs on campus is probably something like 1/100.
How many times do we have to tell you? Don't buy first-gen Apple hardware!
As someone else already mentioned, this probably isn't widespread. Rather than the absolute rule you've suggested, it may be that it only applies to the ultra-compact/portable crop of current Apple machines (books, minis, pods, etc). I ordered a Macintel iMac the day it was made available and 6-months later I've had precisely zero issues with it (--knocks on desk--). Then again, my 2002 PowerBook did have quite a few battery issues, so this may be more a trait of Apple portables in general than new hardware.

Better yet, just use EMUSIC www.emusic.com. Vastly cheaper, more variety, and no DRM whatsoever.
