it is pretty sad - that the scientific community hasn't changed all that much since the dark ages
What a weird thing to say! I'd say the scientific community has been pretty damn successful since the dark ages. i guess it depends on whether you value science or not.
You might notice that I didn't say "MacOS X". I said Darwin. I know full well what Darwin is. It's a pretty definitive answer to the question of "Does MacOS X exist for Intel?". The answer is that part of the code has been ported. But of course you're so full of yourself that you think I need a lecture in the parts of an OS. I think you're not terribly smart. You might know some fluff about OSes but you're certainly too slow to realise that when someone makes a short statement it doesn't mean that that is the sum total of everything that they know.
Just tell me what you want to believe and I'll write you a report demonstrating it. Want proof that Windows is the best OS? Pay me $1E6 and I'll write the report. Want to prove that PGP offers the best security? Just $5E5 for that one. Yes sir! Just send me your questions and pay me 6 dollar sums of money and I'll demonstrate it for you.
And that's not all! For an extra 25% I'll make a press release to a selection of the top 25 newspapers worldwide and for an extra 50% I'll submit the story to Slashdot.
If you study and understand quantuum physics, you'll forget you ever said the universe is a giant computer
There are plenty of people with a good understanding of QM who like to use the computational viewpoint - including the author of the paper under discussion.
Technical advancement without an equal advancement in human values is currently jeapordizing the entire globe
And I have a horrible itch due to a mosquito bite. Why do I mention that? Well it's about as relevant to the discussion of whether or not a computational model for the universe is a good one.
It's not an analogy. It's a perspective. From a certain point of view the universe might look exactly like a computer. If it does then it might as well be a computer because you can treat it exactly like one. This doesn't preclude the possibility that there might be other points of view too.
There is, of course, the possibility that it's not a valid point of view. But that needs more arguing than simply "the universe isn't a computer".
Of course they are. Spam=bandwidth. Wasted bandwidth means either more equipment is required to carry the same amount of useful data OR you suffer from reduced bandwidth. Either way you end up with reduced bang for your buck.
Well they say the big studios like movies to catch the interest of at least two major ethnographic groups: geeks, Lifetime TV watchers, jocks etc. I guess Blizzard were smart enough to catch more than one group with their game too...
Who wants a storyline? I want gameplay. I skipped over the stupid cut sequences in WCII and got down to playing the actual game. Who wants tighter integration of cinematic sequences? I thought those sequences were just for screenshots for sales purposes. I don't want to have to watch them. Gameplay is what made WCII great! Not storyline, not cut sequences. Strategy and action!
...money on funding an Islamic space programme maybe we could get another space race going. That's the only way we're ever going to see any more manned exploration.
...for sharing files is Windows File Sharing. Just right click on a folder of mp3's and switch on sharing to let your colleagues enjoy your collection. I would just love to see it outlawed.
You can't even drink a Coke without being hassled by the police in the US. I'm serious. They come and check to see if you've slipped something alcoholic in it. And woe betide you in the States if you walk through the street with an alcoholic beverage. The mistake is to take the lid off. If you leave the lid on it looks like you've just come out of McDonalds so it's OK.
Yes, sound! I forgot how deeply embedded in my subconscious the music of Underworld was. It plays fine under DOS. And the Settlers sound works fine too. Not every game has sound though.
...here

...among NASA engineers? I get the feeling there is tension between scientists and engineers there.

I'm sure this is a troll but I'll bite anyway. Darwin is available for Intel and Darwin is what MacOS X is built on. But you knew that anyway...
Thanks for the most excellent link! I'll have to read the book now.

Actually, OpenBSD has one on the CD liner with a printout of what you would be able to see if you had a monitor attached!

All of which you just made up!

Ignore this sentence - it's just some crap so I don't get bored waiting for the stupid

Drinking in the streets is illegal all over the US.

Er...can you read Russian...where do you download from...
In other words the problem with longer lifespans is that other people besides you get to live longer too.
