So you're saying it's ok to spend your money with "the evil Chinese" and support man's inhumanity to man, just so long as you publicly acknowledge it? Weird...
IRL I rarely (if ever) see this "mac fanboi" you haters are always bitching about. Also, because I'm not much on bandwagons and try to be fair I've often been accused of being a "mac fanboi" myself which tells me a lot of the applehate crowd are pretty much a bunch of morons bent on conducting an applehate fest -- IOW just a bunch of stupid, senseless trolls. I'm not at all a lover of Apple and their policies, but consider them a valid choice for non-geeks. It's called being a realist.
Those of you who use the same planet earth tech manufactured in China but try to scapegoat buyers of Apple products as somehow being worse are a bunch of disgusting hypocrites.
mac fanboys who try to minimize what Steve Jobs and Foxconn are complicit in - Dickensian working conditions in a repressive police state.
Yes, it's those filthy mac fanbois and that evil hobgoblin Steve Jobs who are perpetrating this! Unlike all those other manufacturers of electronic goods, who are well known for paying a living wage and making the goods in countries like the US, Canada, and -- oh, wait...
[NOTE to the idiot who modded me down]: Yeah, because it sure is a whole hell of a lot easier to mod me "troll" than to back up the claim that in some small city in the US people are getting busted for kiddie porn left and right. Dumbass.
Hopefully a few of 'em 'll retire while the Dems are in and Obama'll man up and put some liberals in
Do we even have any real Liberals left anywhere? Obama, Pelosi, Clinton, and their ilk are basically so centrist they're "Republican Lite". Surely I'm not the only left-leaning person who feels unrepresented. As far as that goes, the Republicans don't do a particularly good job at representing conservatives, either.
I don't agree with the idea that because lawbreakers are more likely to opt out of tracking everyone should be tracked whether they want it or not. I know you can make a rational case for it, but it still seems draconian to me. Especially considering we could just make a few changes in the laws which would improve safety a great deal. You know all those stretches of road where "everyone speeds" and those who are trying not to break the law find it intimidating to have all these other drivers whizzing by them? Easily solved by raising the limit on that stretch of road. Unless there's a RR crossing or a school or something government should not be trying to lower the speed of the average motorist, since the average driver probably handles it just fine. Perhaps better driver's education and stricter licensing requirements could help shore up most of the rest, and the few who just shouldn't be driving would finally be taken out of everyone's way.
I can see how providing anonymized data to your local and/or federal DOT could be seen as a public safety benefit and thus a public service. But it should be opt-in for the end user, not automatic and silent.
I know that, but in this rural area I'm lucky to have "broadband" at all. AT&T's DSL service does ok on speed (I'm usually at ~5Mbps, but they don't give the plentiful bandwidth I got when I lived in the city and had speakeasy's service. I really miss those guys...
One, my ass! In my small city alone I see newspaper stories all the time...
Fascinating! I'd like to know more about this small city which is such a hotbed of IP crackdown. You must give us the zip code so we can see for ourselves on google news, or if you prefer just link your hometown newspaper. Maybe you could submit a slashdot story about it.
Unless of course, you're just talking out your ass...
Agreed. I tried leaving my wifi open for awhile, but other people using it would slow my connection down so I finally relented and went with WPA2 encryption. Funny thing is, I'm in a rural area and the nearest neighbor is at least 600 ft away through a patch of dense woods. Of course, country people have resorted to repeaters and high-power antennae for decades, so maybe it's not so surprising at least one of my neighbors knows how to get wifi from pretty far away.
I keep expecting we'll get rid of all that just because most people hate it. I predict eventually it's all be something like "itz" and "thayr". Definition is generally definable from context.
I am no way endorsing this, BTW. I happen to like English as it is very much, but it does have a history of relatively rapid change. With the confluence of so many people learning ESL and the younger generation being less tolerant of complicated grammar, usage, and spelling than us older folks, I think a lot of those rules will be simplified in the next decade or two.
Seriously, I invite you to learn what communism is supposed to be. If you spend even a little time learning about that and about human behavior, especially from a sociological perspective, you will see pretty clearly that communism is a huge lie that can never happen because people are involved.
Exactly, it's too idealistic to be practical. Like Libertarianism (real Libertarianism, not the corporate-sponsored version that's sweeping the land).
No, I'd rather it said "This is usually a safe operation, depending upon disk and filesystem compatibility. If you're not sure what this means, you might want to reconsider........Proceed?" With a thingie to click on that says "More details".
Absolutely. Some of their hardware is aesthetically quite compelling, but the potential for problems with being able to do things my own way are just too great. Sony has joined Apple in the control freak lock-down category. I'm sure it's a fine choice if you just want to use it as it is out-of-the-box, but I'm not an out-of-the-box kind of geek.
TFS is a candidate for "Most Idiotic Slashdot Summary EVAR".
We hope some day ayaaayhayyy you'll join u-huh-us
And ideeeee-yaaaaas will be free again!

Just be persistent in posting with your old account and in a few weeks you'll see the karma change.

Yes, it's also why we don't speak King James' English anymore. :)
Heh, maybe -- how would I know for sure? :D
No seriously, the point is that corporations are not strictly speaking run by humans, but by committees.
I would have expected he knows that and is trolling ("linux == leftist 'jack booted thugs'" troll), but one never really knows...
ah, poop.

Because we all know that China is a monolithic organism masquerading as a nation of individuals?
No, they're run by large, multinational corporations same as every other modern country.

I'm sure that's less confusing than just lying.
How is making excuses being "fair to Microsoft"? What about being fair to the user?
I guess I'm old and just don't know anymore. Kids download executables from Anonymous or even just use google and call that "a hack" nowadays. o_0

I lol'd for real and startled my poor dog. Glad I'd finished my tea few minutes before.
:D
