Because I have a Nexus S, where it's relatively easy to unlock the bootloader. The fact that I don't want to bother with this, because it offers me no benefits, is another topic entirely.
So you claim to have one of the (two?) red herrings. Convenient!
Now you answer me this: how do you hope to prove that I'm shilling with these questions?
I have nothing to "prove", actually. Just hoping to dissuade some of the hopelessly clueless fanboi-ism here on slashdot with a few facts. You're not 1337 or Free because you choose Android, that's all. It's a message lots of self-righteous fanbois on slashdot need to hear. Of all the Android devices sold, a miniscule number of phones aimed at devs are able to run a custom kernel of the user's choice. The rest have no way to be sure their device is running the "released source code".
Also, it is annoying to see so many clueless wannabes championing "innovation" and "freedom" while referring to what is essentially a bad copy of an OS which itself is a version of a dumbed down OS further dumbed-down to a pre-verbal level. All those choices are just fine if that's what you want -- just stop pretending one of those choices makes you better or different from another.
Right, so why did you leave out the fact that you don't own an android device that doesn't have a locked bootloader and hence could not run any kernel but the one your carrier installed? And why are you pretending I meant "create a custom kernel from scratch" when everyone knows "your custom kernel" means your custom kernel configuration? Is that due to ignorance or is it denial?
Step 1: Build copycat of loathed "hipster-using-walled-garden-locked-down-shiny-shiny-shiny"
Step 2: Call your pale imitation "superior" an "innovative", paint users as "tech saavy" while selling out all the personal data for advertising everywhere.
Step 3: Laugh at the douche-y wannabes duped into shilling for you.
True, but in a near-monoculture of proprietary software powered devices, it won't matter what clever scheme is employed. "I encrypted it on my pwned system" is just another way to fail.
"Consumer"-types had as much vitriol in the 1950s, when they too insisted 3D was the Next Big Thing. Flopped then, too. Fake 3D doesn't work for everyone, and causes massive headaches. It is a scam, in that the companies pushing it know very well it will never be adopted on any meaningful scale. But they'll happily sell you expensive, jittery, eyestrain-inducing "3D" equipment, and you'll masquerade as an "early adopter" and be surprised when the "3D" titles remain rare and finally vanish for a few decades (again).
In case you haven't figured it ut yet, 3D is not at all in the same category as color or sound -- because actually we have very good tech for producing sound and color that work for everyone who can see and hear. Duh...
Only if the School mandates all Textbooks must be available as eBooks for the iPad2, and they actually ban backpacks, requiring students to only bring an 'iPad carrier' with a small pouch for pens and pencils.
What are these "pens and pencils" of which you speak?
I'm always amazed at shows like CSI and NCIS that make it look as though Law Enforcement is all about 1337 h4xx0rz using tech to prevail against evil, when reading between the lines of so many news articles reveals quite a different story.
That's not quite the way it works. You end up on a list -- everyone inevitably does, unless you live "underground" -- a research company searches databases for your info, which leads them to more info...
The real story here is that swcast took their clients' money and told them they had a license to broadcast certain content, which turned out to be a lie. So swcast is the villain here, not soundexchange.
A. They search you, being in a good mood, sorry for bothering you, and eager to go do something else.
B. They detain you while waiting for a search order to be rubber stamped by an uncaring judge, then search you while pissed off that you dared to challenge their authority.
I know how you feel, I've been suffering from mafiAA fatigue for years now so no worries about varieties of fatigue which arise from throwing money at that particular enemy of culture.
This thingie you're typing into is called a "discussion". Generally, we read the entore thing rather than asking the same questions 20 or 30 people have already asked. Happy reading...
I think the idea is "they released it without protection and after it had been on the market available for copying and/or reverse-engineering then they screwed us by seeking a patent".
I think the point is that that is a belief. It's based on wishful thinking, and the bare minimum studies to show it won't kill you immediately. Therefore, you're an example of "I want to believe".
So you claim to have one of the (two?) red herrings. Convenient!

Ok, then if you're not shilling, answer this -- is your Android device running your custom kernel? Why not?
...that you can assimilate. That's what fanbois experience when someone points out their emperor is nude.
Step 5: Get modded troll by unconscious corporate shills for telling truth. I did know it was coming, but my post is still informative in real life. :P

Bleed like a craze, dad.

FTFMe -- good job, too!!

We are Ferengi of Borg. You will be assimilated. Or criminalized.
No, that began before most of us were even born. Now go study some history, and don't submit any more blurbs as if they are stories.
Obvious false dichotomy is obvious.
I know how you feel, I've been suffering from mafiAA fatigue for years now so no worries about varieties of fatigue which arise from throwing money at that particular enemy of culture.
But FreeBSD, NetNSD, and OpenBSD are still in operation, still releasing under BSD licensing schemes. That make you wrong.
You're right, thanks. I can let go of that now. :)

Pardon me, I think you dropped something.
