    If electric cars were a viable alternative to conventional, internal combustion engined vehicles, they wouldn't need hundreds of millions of dollars of tax money to keep them in business.

    Oh, then by that standard there are damn few companies worldwide (and none in the US) producing viable ICE-powered cars.

    I noticed that as well, apparently the blog is here. It'd be laughable were it not so sad. The human capacity for clinging to ignorance in spite of well-known facts really is an amazing thing.

    Perhaps, but as a woman I can definitely tell you that all my women friends have agreed it's an unfortunate name because the first thing it makes us think of is feminine hygiene products.

    While it's true that you have to know your customer, it's hopeless when your customer is so self-centered and fragile that such a common word is somehow offensive.

    What on earth are you going on about? It's not offensive, just awkward. It lacks cachet, which is a bit surprising. Even iSlate would've been so much better -- though really, haven't we all had enough of the "i" thing? It's so '90s...

    Anyone can develop and publish apps to run on OS X, but it hasn't harmed Apple's reputation. Same thing can be said of *nix and even Windows. The reason the iPhone is treated as a special case almost certainly has more to do with potential liability issues regarding AT&T's network. But of course it still sucks.

    I don't doubt that it's around 95%, but the logic of the above-quoted statement is certainly flawed.

    flash based cookies, which are not that easy to block and/or delete for the user, are used by all advertisers and other bastards, spying on you

    Trivial to defeat, at least in *.nix. Just remove all write permissions to the ~/.adobe and ~/.macromedia directories, after deleting all the cookies within. Buh-bye, flash cookies. Also makes flash work noticeably faster.

    It's really not that unusual. If you log in at amazon.com (or lots of other places) you see the "logged in as $name", and right near that a link that says, "not $name? log out". I remember once I went to some site and was logged in as someone else, but that was back in 1998...

    My 3 year old Pentium-M laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 can play 720p nicely using mplayer, but can't play 480p acceptably in flash.

    My 3 year old Pentium-M laptop with FreeBSD 8.0 plays flash just fine via the linux-f10-flashplugin10 port -- we don't even get a native libflashplayer.so. Sounds like you have an Ubuntu problem, not a flash problem...

    I disagree, the links seem appropriate in their respective contexts.
    However, TFS' question strikes me as superfluous -- FF already has lots of extensions of questionable quality. They're simply looking to transition to a new implementation of extensions, which hopefully will bog the browser down less and create fewer security issues by sticking with simpler code. Can't see how that would be "the wrong direction", frankly...

    I got news for you -- there are effectively no emergency services for most of us living in rural areas. The 45+ minute response time kills that idea, so we're used to making other arrangements.

    I used to have it like that too, til they built a new subdivision around the corner -- which I then had to share resources with. Service went to hell and I went to DSL, which now makes cable in this area feel like dial up.

    The risk is that the POTS will die and those who can't get IP will be left without phone line - and left with a comment that they could use mobile phones.

    Considering how loooooong it took to switch TV to digital, I doubt that will happen. This is probably good news, signaling that there is a real intention to provide wireless/broadband coverage nationwide -- finally!

    The law is far too lax when it comes to issuing driver's licenses. I'll never forget years ago, when I went to take the written test I nervously asked the examiner "how many questions am I allowed to miss?". The answer was 12 ! That's 12 out of 78. No wonder people get confused as soon as the expected routine changes in even the smallest way.

    I mean, you're not writing the article yourself (except in some cases), surely doing a summary that isn't ridiculous isn't too much of a stretch.

    TFS is a direct quote from TFA. Maybe not the best, but TFA and the videos are actually pretty cool. With our own government becoming more and more oppressive we could probably learn a lot from the Chinese.
