  1. Re:equity versus salary on Ask Slashdot: How To Ask For Equity In a Startup? · · Score: 1

Ask for stock options. Basically, you get an agreement that within a certain period on time you can purchase shares at the price the shares sit at when you make the agreement. Now with a start-up they will likely make the shares available a little at a time (vesting) e.g. The shares are worth a dollar now, and they give you options for 50,000 shares. The shares are 20% vested upfront and vest 20% absolute every year for the following 4 years. That means after 4 years you have the option to buy 50,000 shares for $50,000 no matter the share price, even if they go down. BUT after 2 years you would only be able to buy 20,000 shares at $20,000 and if you leave you only get to carry your vested portion, normally for a period of time. The bottom-line is that with every golden handshake, there's a golden handcuff.

You end up with cool conclusions like "According to the GREET model a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) that weighs 2,632 pounds requires 102 million BTU to make, or 38,650 BTU/lb. This small difference in production energy becomes negligible when you factor in the increased fuel efficiency. The Toyota Prius has a curb weight of 3,042 lbs, so its manufacture used roughly 117.6 million BTU (mmbtu)" (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/04/ask-pablo-hybrid-cabs.php)

  16. Re:At the risk of my nerd card... on Ask Slashdot: How/Where To Start Watching Dr. Who? · · Score: 2

The preferred Doctor seems to be the one you grow up with. My elder sister was a Pertwee fan I was a Baker fan. However, in saying this, I would start at Baker. The style of the show (while remaining lovingly cheesy) became more along the lines of what you may be used to in today's age. As mentioned, Hartnell and Troughton led shows more aimed at the younger generation and Hartnell was depicted as a grandfather figure to young Susan, so the episodes can get a little parental preachy. The problem for me with Pertwee was the true embracement of late 60's early 70's culture. The electronic synth that runs constantly through his episodes will drive your brain nuts. However, Terror of the Autons introduced the Master and for that I thank the 3rd Dr. (The Deadly Assassin was the best Master episodes in my opinion). The 'maturing' of the Dr. became apparent in Tom Bakers role with the addition of Leela (The Face of Evil), where the older males started to be attracted to the show due to her skimpy outfits (I still remember my Dads comments). In my opinion this bought in a new mature audience that then started to redefine the approach. I never really thought that Tom Baker could be surpassed until the second season with Tenet; he really did fit the role around then. The other things that are worth watching are the older movies made in the 60's with Peter Cushing as the Dr (Day of the Daleks and Daleks-Invasion Earth). Different premise somewhat to the series, but Cushing fit the role well and was a mature contrast to Hartnell. These of course are just my ramblings as a life long fan of DW who hit 40 last year.

  18. Re:Years long... on NASA Picks Up Rainstorms On Titan · · Score: 4, Informative

Caveat - I am not an astronomer. Actually, I agree with the original poster the article is confusing. I believe that they swap the point of reference without announcing they did. While the initial units are in Earth years: "as Titan takes two weeks to go around Saturn and Saturn takes 29 years to complete one circuit of the Sun." They then move to either the Saturn or Titan point of reference, as it would make no sense comparing Earths 'time of year' to a warming period for Titan "McEwan says the atmospheric models predicted that there would be clouds in the equatorial regions at this time of year, as the sun on Titan got warmer. "We saw these clouds suddenly, and then we saw the equatorial area darken," he said." As the warming period for Titan must be associated to Saturns position relative to the Sun I can only assume that this second seasonal reference is based on Staurns orbital year. Which would then also explain why the article claims the seasons are 'years long' as it is talking about Saturn seasons in Earth years.
