Yes, there are examples when people speak the same language but belong to different cultures. However people who speak different languages always belong to different cultures. You picked up an excellent example yourself - North and South of Belgium...
A language does not define a culture, people should be allowed to communicate in any manor of their choosing.>>>>>>>
You are completely wrong with this on: Language and only Language is what really defines Culture. Closer to the topic - efforts of Quebec people to protect the basis of their cultural heritage is understandable. However I have my doubts if this is the right way, it might backfire on local game-stores etc. I would recommend positive measures, which support French in Quebec.
>>However GPLv3 was crafted to address a very real problem, and judging from Microsoft's reaction, it is doing a great job in that regard.>>
Excellent operation, Professor! Your techniques are magnificent! Professor, your intelligence... that's top level! We are so-ooo-o impressed... only, could we ask you, why did your patient die???/in memoriam, to FOSS etc, 'saved' by GPLv3 and pinkies/commies/.
>>Those who believe in F/OSS as a philosophy and accept GPLv3 will be branded pinkos and commies by "commercial friendly" open source, and die a slow death...?>> Don't worry, you are already branded as pinkos and commies! What do you expect if you accept such a bulls**t as GPL3? Which kind of credibility you expect for Mr. Stallman in the eyes of any self-respecting businessman?
I hope any printer manufacturer engaging in this sort of anti-competitive skullduggery is punished HARD in the marketplace.>>>
The problem with your logics is that ALL printer manufacturers see cartridges as a major revenue of their investments. ALL of them. Therefore ALL of them ARE interested to protect their specific market share of cartridges. To protect THEIR share and not on expenses of other printer manufacturers (are you using cheaper HP cartridges for Epson printers??? - of course, not!), but on expenses of 3rd party business which provides cheaper alternatives. Therefore if the 'chip strategy' will be successful, I expect that all printer manufacturers will eventually implement these cartridge chips, and market will not help you.
Anything associated with socialism, Nazism or communisms is foe to FREEDOM. If Open Source Society wants to be associated with Fidel, Chavez, Putin, Lukashenko etc. - their choice. But please - don't speak about the freedom anymore! We, the People, don't need such a freedom as in soviet union or nazi Germany. If some old crackpot like Stallman wants free beer - he can drink it with Fidel, who really cares!
Well, a lot of people in scientific/medical commmunity might move to OO, but the main problem is lack of support for EndNote and/or ReferenceManager. Scientists and students working in biomedical and related fields usually have the draft version of their current paper(s) on their computer, so we are constantly changing the draft, figures, and bibliography. This means that we use Word processor (no problem with OO), we use PowerPoint (also no problem with OO), we definitely prefer to use Adobe CS for vector grafics and images (well, I can substitute for Gimp and Inkscape, somehow), we are running a lot of special software for such a things as routine DNA sequence analysis (Windows, Ma, some Linux versions) or FACS analysis (Mac versions available only). So, is there space for OpenOffice? - No!!! Because OpenOffice is NOT supported neither by EndNote nor by ReferenceManager! And before this will change, all biomedical scientific community will stick with M$O. During the last years I have contacted Thomson ResearchSoft several times asking about the Linux version - seems to be no way.
>You just don't realize you want Leopard yet.> No, my dear, I do realize I want Leopard. And I will have it! I'm just not going to pay for it! And more important - I DEFINITELY want Vista as well... Definitely I will have it. But the same as for Leopard - I'm just NOT going to pay for it separately! My Vista will come with my new working desktop computer at Universität, and my Leopard will come with my new MacBook Pro. Interested to buy my old MBPro? - give me a call, Schatz!
> I'd buy it on a new PC, but in no way buy it outright...> Well, on my MacBook Pro I have a triple-boot system: MacOS X Tiger, WindowsXP, and ArchLinux. Depends on my mood which one I will boot - usually either WindowsXP (most of my professional-scientific stuff is under Windows), or MacOSX - for all the rest. Perhaps I will have my hands on Vista install DVD, and will change to Vista from XP. But I will tell you one thing - definitely I'm not going to spent any to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard! So, what does it tell us? That I don't like MacOS?
Dear All, Next time You consider something like that, please contact me first (1513-823@onlinehome.de)! I will give You better price for a legal original M$ Vista (only 'Business' or 'Ultimate' versions, please!) than your Dell refund! In addition, You will have to spend much less time for this transaction!
In a nutshell we all know vista is monkey poo. We all also know it will be on every desktop in 2 years////
I don't agree with you on the first one. But I'm happy about your reasoning on second one. Keep thinking. It helps.
But the point I am making is the site is crappy My Dear, what did you expect from Microsoft's attempt to mimic glorious FOSS community and make some FUD site in order to discredit glorious winning FOSS society/community and lure away dozens of thousands of naive Windows/Linux dual-boot users (like me) from 'The True OS Linux which is so free (from user's convenience, from major software like AdobeCS2, CorelDrawSuite, VD-playback capabilities, M$Office, any professional scientific software, free from EndNote, free from ReferenceManager, free from MindManager.... -should I continue?)' and back into the crappy Window$ mono culture or - even worse - into the lap of MacOS (yes, we proudly announce that there is ongoing campaigns against MacOS and Apple!). therefore, my dear reader and trustable comrade of the glorious Communist Party of the (former) Soviet Uni.... tpfu,f*ck, I wanted to say, honorable Member of the glorious FOSS community, I have uncovered the secret plan by our main enemy, imperialistic Microsoft Inc. They released this FUD campaign against their own product in order to discredit our glorious winning (or was it whining?) FOSS movement in the eyes of general public. Unfortunately completely unexpected for us, their plan appeared to be quite effective. Our glorious FOSS community right now (once again, but this should not be cited officially) is completely exposed as FUD-makers, and I was told that many of former/current Linux users find our winning strategy just disgusting and creepy! So, my dear comrades, we should start a couple of new FUD campaigns against our common enemy, Microsoft. In order to dominate the world, like our big teachers - Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler.. eeeh, sorry, Stahlman and... eh... advised us!
And so much misunderstanding from/. posters. Actually, the campaign's agenda is to promote software freedom.
There is no misunderstanding. The agenda of your campaign is to make FUD campaign against Microsoft (which you hate because of your greed of their business success), Window$ users (your approach to try to convert some of Windows users to linux is miserable but certainly disgusting), and against the natural development of Window$ OS. As you can see around, your FUD campaign is not very successful. You are running around each year claiming that messiah will appear the next year (sorry, linux will become major desktop OS....), and really, who cares about your FUD? Certainly, you are making damage to the image of FOSS, but it was never very nice image. Disgusting, but just go on, FUD'ers, Merry Christmas!
We know one way to fix the thing: introduce choice. That's what free software is doing
Wrong. That#s what free software is TRYING to do. What it is trying desperately, and up to now without any significant success. Because as you say - there should be choice. Comparable choice. I have a choice: Window$ or MacOSX. That's nice choice between two beautiful, polished products. The choice is my. There is NO choice between Windows/MacOS/Linux'es! What a choice between professional desktops and Linux amateurish buggy, slow (like OSuSe) and bloated desktops, either KDE or Gnome which is not much better, which even don't have DVD playback (yes, yes, they have twenty different 'small/nice/future rich/popular/.. blagh-bagh-blagh.. text editors.... or games my granny would find slightly boring- not that I would need them). And this you call a choice to Window$?
Question: is the major browser - IE- supported? - Yes! Fine, then if you are using some minor broser like FF, Opera or Safari - either install major browser (I have IE7 just for these cases), or keep yourself away from that site. It is so simple. Nobody should babycare you.
Let's say I was able to avoid german propaganda... just give kraut a couple of free beers, and he will tell you what he really thinks but never tells when sober... And in addition comment on these 95% - the nice thing is that majority of them are too fearsome to do anything... but would be so nice to...
I feel regret for the death of enemy, indeed. However, if the enemy don't surrender, it should be killed. About politicians - these are politicians I elected. My vote never goes for greens or pacifists.
But the thing that puts Americans over the edge is the deaths of their troops? #### You really expect Americans should care about the enemy casualties?
but since you are asking; I would trust Germany and Belgium more than the US.>>>> I understand You are from UK... I was living in Germany last 8 years, and I would like to assure you that 95% of Germans would like to give back London the same Dresden received on 1945. Are British really so naive to trust sauerkraut Nazis? Belgium - that#s not a power to consider.
OK, guys, to tell the truth: in former times, for me it was FF, Konquerer and Opera, when I fired-up my boxes under the Linux. It was FF and Opera, when I fired-up any of my boxes under Windo$e. Now the situation has changed, and FF is completely REMOVED from my boxes! under the Wondow$, IE7 definitely beats the sh_t out of FF, which (FF) is relatively slow, clumpsy, and I had problems with memory usage already at FF 1.5. My recommendation for Window$: definitely IE7.0 (by the way, there is very nice free tool available to import all of your FF bookmarks into the IE7.0), for Linux - Opera and Konq. No FF!
It looks like that in one year your advice to some novice at slashdot.com will read: ''You should have known that mentioning Ubuntu, Novell, Xandross, Freespire, Linspire or Lindows as model distros in Slashdot is karma suicide!'' O, Tempora! O, Mores!
Sooner or later, all the bugs in Firefox will be ironed out, and it will be considered bulletproof,....******* Dear Friend, this is just a whishfull thinking... not so funy, 'cause it is just naive! FireFox will always be a step behind pfishers/crackers.... and yes, IE might be even more! Under Linux I use FF, under Windo$e IE7 is just plain faster than FF. Sorry Friend, I have no choice but to say that anti-Microsoft hysteria of some people is just naive and stupid.

This is just a plain example on expected negetive effect of GNU Protectipon License on Open Source movement and community. How predictable!

Sorry, this tells the story - typical french anti-American sentiments, looking for non-existing french greatness!
