  1. Re:arXiv articles - question on A Quantum Linear Equation Solver · · Score: 1

I thought it had been nearly proven that peer review for highly specialized complex subjects was pretty much worthless, since most reviewers will not understand the subject matter and also won't be willing to admit that they don't understand it.

No. Speaking as a scientist involved in esoteric areas: That program was a farce, it was accepted for "review" at a scientific conference, a much lower standard. When it comes to a conference someone who is simply interested in the title might allow the paper in.

As for important research: If you are publishing in a good journal, something that has more citations than articles published, then you will have someone who knows enough about the subject to give it a reasonable review.

  2. You have no constitutional right to privacy on Bush Demands Amnesty for Spying Telecoms · · Score: 2, Funny

No where in the constitution is there an express 'right to privacy', this is a fact, if you disagree try reading the document.

The 'right' to privacy is a right made by the USSC and though we have a long standing tradition of following laws made on the bench there is nothing that the court can do to enforce its own laws.

If we want to live in a society free of totalitarian style thought policing and information scanning then we need more than simple rulings against warrantless wiretaps. What we must have in order to protect us from unchecked power in the executive branch is both an independent judiciary and a legislative branch that values personal freedom.

Without a constitutional amendment to hold anyone who violates our rights to privacy like this again accountable for treason we are doing nothing less than tacitly consenting to such despicable acts whenever the executive branch finds it convenient.

  3. Autodidactic and educated, a dangerous combo on IT Job Without a Degree? · · Score: 1

There's a theory of trust called "signaling", the idea is that for those who do not know you personally there are particular 'signals' that someone who is a Philomath and a hard worker will fulfill. One of those things is to get a degree.

On top of that, even after you have a job, it is important to continue to 'signal' interest and motivation. If you stay later than you're "being paid for" and come in earlier than expected then you are 'signaling' interest in the wellbeing of the company. If you continue your education while doing the aforementioned you are 'signaling' that you are motivated.

A degree says one thing: you where willing to work hard enough to get through collage. It also opens up a career path. Without a degree you are only as valuable as your trade skill. With a collage degree you are able to advance, through an executive MBA or masters in your field, and become a leader of men.

If "database guru" is your life's goal I am sure you can make enough money to raise a family on without getting a collage degree. But if sending your own kids through collage is your intent then the number one predictor of that is you, yourself, going through collage.

  4. Distribution "rights" are immoral. on James Boyle's New Book Under CC License · · Score: 2, Interesting

once it is on the internet it is difficult to have artistic control, however the producer has the rights to be credited for its creation. The one that is not responsible for the creation of the product that is put up on the internet is the thief if it is put up there without the creator's permission.

Taking an idea from someone else and giving it away is thievery, but once an idea has been sold it is no longer under the control if its author.

All of academia and our modern society is based on both the right of ideas to be free and for idea creators to sell their ideas.

So: no matter how the idea is distributed we should all have the right, and certainly do have the responsibility, to pay the originator of the idea for his material.

Distribution rights are unconstitutional immoral and antithetical to a free and prosperous society. Intellectual property rights are, on the other hand, the exact opposite.

The point of the DX10 graphics in windows is to look cool and offload some of the processing onto the 3D card. It reminds me of putting the swap file on a ram-disk, wasting system resources to do something meant to get around having limited system resources.

That said, at least we won't see nearly as many lawsuits because of varying levels of "windows 7" compatibility.

If you remember the old SWG website then you remember how long the load times where for simple things like âmenusâ(TM). Ironically this was directly reflected in the load times that where constant in the game.

Fast forward to SWtOR and look at the front page. It takes a while to load, it is un-intuitive, thereâ(TM)s a ridiculous splash screen, pointless graphics and obnoxious sounds every time you hit the front page.

This does not portend well for the KotOR MMO my young padawan.
