Yeah, javascript isn't too bad. Looking at the syntax for html/xhtml makes me want to vomit though. No sane programmer today would design a markup language that remotely resembles it.
    Random example: (input type="checkbox" checked="checked" /)

Why in the fuck would you have a string? I assume it isn't a string deep down but that doesn't really help the code itself. Another example could be things having names, IDs, classes seems amazingly redundant. Then there is anything to do with tables. And formatting has tons of stupid quirks. Only way it dodges being the worst language ever is the fact that it isn't really a language.

But yeah, I totally agree with you. The javascript hate probably isn't coming from people that have done web development. No one is saying we need to change the world radically. Our daily lives wouldn't change that much. In fact the cost that the scientists have worked out isn't that harsh really. Germany for example has had a 23% reduction since 1990... They aren't a fascist wasteland from the effort, really they aren't much changed at all. Many other countries have had large reductions since 1990, England and Greece I heard did well... The radical bit is the fear of what will happen if we put things off too long. A 20 year delay will likely multiply costs in orders of magnitude.

Anyways back on topic. People suck balls at doing cost benefit analysis when it comes to human lives. A lot of people think it is uncouth to assign a life a number value so we pretty much pick values at random. http://www.cbe.wwu.edu/Krieg/Econ.%20Documents/1603902-00.jpg is one example, look at the asbestos banning hilarity. Other examples are air quality or health insurance. Where human lives drop under 50k. Or we could callously wander around the globe and see that lives are worth like 9$ a pop. You might not care a shit ton about other countries people but when the ratio is several thousand of them to one of you it becomes harder to tell them to piss off and feel ok. My apologies for my socialist thoughts w/e.

You have to think about the costs of Not over treating swine flu. Really it was the media that screwed us on the pricetag. If the gov didn't spend billions on the swine flu hilarity there would be mass panics, riots, politicians would hang. There'd be con-men on the street selling sugar pills that fixed swine flu. Think about this. The US didn't use adjuvants in the swine vaccine they spread. I would have been WAY cheaper and MORE effective. But the paranoid ignorant masses thought it killed baby jesus or w/e. So it wasn't used. Why would they use it. The theater idea "Give the people what they want and they will love you for it" applies fully to politics (I believe the quote is from the gladiator movie). And I don't blame politicians for it. Why should they give up power and control to their rivals because the masses are stupid? Better to burn a billion dollars. The impression of control for the people is worth the cost.

If ridings didn't exist and things were proportional then it wouldn't be local..... And it wouldn't matter what district you were in, you could vote for whoever you wanted and have a pretty good shot at getting represented... Unless your party of choice got NO seats.

But yeah MMP would allow people to do better in federal and local elections. I do however think that were MMP to pass most people would care about the federal election and the local election would turn out much the same as it is today. People not knowing who any of the candidates are and voting with w/e party they can relate to. Perhaps though local reps would be advertising themselves rather than the party and we could see some meaningful local politics.
