Velcro was thought up by an Austrian or Swiss man whose name I don't recall who noticed how the burrs from some of the plants where he walked in the woods with his dogs stuck to his socks. Sorry for the lack of details, this really is not a troll.
Bill Gates will not any richer with this split. One of the provisions of the remedy prevents anyone who owns more than 5% of todays MS stock from owning stock in both companies. This was aimed directly at Billy boy. Although the news report I saw this on didn't explicitly say so the implication was that Gates is the only person to own more than 5%.
I'm reading a lot of posts squeling like stuck pigs, and they're all keying into one or two items.
Depression: is a serious illness, and people who suffer from it should not be catagorized and watched. But having your friends and peers knowing what the signs and systems are and who to contact if some one they care about start demonstrating these signs is not a bad thing.
Weapons: I'm the father of an 11 year old son. If one of his schools mates shows up at school with a firearm or a knife larger than a standard pen knife, I sure as hell expect him to report it.
If all you read is this authors inflamatory article and get all hot and bothered, then you are no different than those who blindly went trailing behind McCarthy in the 50's.
Also keep in mind that not all geeks are depressed, gun toting misfits, and not all non-geeks are not.
These gloves are in response specifically to the Mario Party game. I have an 11 year-old son who has rented this game once. After watching him play one of the sub-games I wouldn't let him rent it again. The sub-game I metion seems to be a type of fishing thing where you cast out and try to catch things of various values. The method used for reeling in your catch is to twirl the joystick. The kids quikly learn that the fastest why to do this is by putting the joystick in the middle of the palm and rotating the lower arm. That is why the palm is padded.
If you're not a specialist in the use of light energy, how can you make claims about a technology that you have only read about in a 4 or 5 page long non-technical article?
One of the things that bugs me on/. is a bunch of IT monkeys slamming others for "not getting it" when it comes to OS's, then turning around and acting as if their knowledge of computers translates into prowess in physics.
Why is this a "2"? It's nothing but a lame ass remark.

The file format for MetaFlash Studio, which is the software used by the camera, is called MetaStream and is an open file format, you can get it here. You need to fill out a registration form, but only name, e-mail, platform, and what type of content you develop are mandatory.
Also on that page is some sample source for a reader viewer. The biggest problem with the sample code is that it does not include any vertex ordering. So it doesn't know what order to draw the vertices.
But even at that there is nothing keeping someone with some knowledge of Netscape plug-ins from creating a viewer for Linux. Or even a reader/writer to convert VRML to MTS (thier file format).

This is not intended to create 3d pictures, or stereographic photos.
By using this camera, and the assosciated software you "stitch" together multiple views, from different angles to develop a 3d model of the object.
This is not about making pretty pictures, it is about taking existing real world items into a digital format that can then be used to do further development.
An example might be an architect is hired to add to an existing building, or develop the grounds surrounding it, the building was designed and built in the 1920's so all of the designs are ink on vellum or linen.
That makes it hard to easily make a 3d model of the place. So he takes a few shots of the building from ground level maybe a couple from surrounding buildings, stitches points that are common from one photo to another, and voila there is a model he can take into 3d Studio or similar, and do his planning.
I didn't know that the dinosaurs and insects living the cretaceous built houses that needed roof tiles, or any kind of writting or drawing skills to go along with those black boards. Quik call Bob Bakker(sp?)
...is when asked about travel to other solar systems he didn't think that humans would ever achieve faster than light travel, and his reasoning for this was that we've never had visitors for the future. Later when discussing genetic engineering, he says that the practical limit to human intelligence is the size of head that will pass through the birth canal, thereby limiting brain size. And that despite what laws may be passed someone will attempt genetic engineering on humans, possibly grow the phetus outside the body as in "Brave New World".
Now we've all seen the "X-files", "Project UFO", "Arthur C. Clarkes' Mysterious World", etc. The vast majority of close encounters with aliens describe said aliens as having large heads.
The Salem witch trials were more the result of "A Big Brother" know as organized religion. At that time the church reigned over every aspect of daily life. And where you could be stoned or pressed to death simply by an accusation by another citizen, because witches were inherently evil and must be destroyed.
This was also a situation where the legal precedents relied on the way witches were tried during medieval times. Frequently if you survived the test (tied-up and dunked in a well) you were guilty, if you died you were innocent.

This is called a proof of concept (even if that term wasn't used in the article thats what this is). After the concept has been proven, then you have an idea of what traits/characteristics to have your software recognize. And you wouldn't have wasted all that time and effort.
With this solution you're still asking someone to customize their environment themselves. What the previous poster was saying is that in order to draw the non-expert user in, the CLI needs to have straight forward, non-cryptic commands out of the box.
Most of the boxes where I work that have problems, are bitting the dust because the user has tried to install (or worse un-install) some software themselves. Taking away the ability to hose the system from the avarage user in the corporate workplace in not a bad thing. Have the network folks who hopefully know what they're doing add/remove software.

The article says that his software will remotely scan your server and fix any problems it finds.
Oh yeah, this guy is a real sercurity expert. Everyone knows that allowing a remote system to change your server setup is a great idea... Jeeesh!
