  1. Why not? on ACM Urges Obama To Include CS In K-12 Core · · Score: 1

I actually like this idea a lot.

For example, things like stacks are really easy to understand at a conceptual level. They won't even know that they're learning computer science. I can really see small children taking an interest in stuff like this, and just using it to model and solve simple problems. Seems fun.

I'm not too sure, though. That's what immediately came to my mind. I would be very interested in seeing what the proposed curriculum is actually like.

  3. Re:Andromeda Strain!!! or not... on Meteorite Causes Illness in Peru · · Score: 1

This has always been in the back of mind. Is it even possible for meteors to carry any pathogens/bacteria/viruses? You guys have already pointed out that it was probably all the dirt that was thrown up in the air due to the impact that made everyone sick. Who knows what that meteorite unearthed? My question still stands, though. Is it possible at all for a meteor to carry any of the stuff that could have made people sick? I would assume that the harsh environment of deep space, coupled with the literally scorching descent from our atmosphere would eliminate all bacteria/viruses. But you never know.

  4. Too much work. on Google's $10 Local Search Play · · Score: 1

First of all, I would like to say that this sounds like a great way to make some money on the side. However, the amount of work required to earn a maximum of $20 ($10 + $2 +$8) per business you refer seems rather large. "...visit local businesses and tell them about Google Maps and Google AdWords, collect information (such as hours of operation and types of payment accepted), and take digital photos of the business." That to me, looks like HOURS worth of work. I am to go inside a business talk about various google products, collect business information that some business won't even release easily (or at all), and take photos of the business. And in the end you might not even get the full $20. I don't know. It's not like I'm asking for increased pay or anything. It's just that google is asking for a lot.

  5. Re:compare results on Computer Graphics With Java · · Score: 1

That's not fair. To say that Java can only go as far as Runescape, while other languages such as C++ are clearly better (WoW, EQ2) is just plain dumb. You're comparing a game thats played in a BROWSER to a game thats played in FULL SCREEN. The game played in the browser (Runescape) is hampered by the browser itself. Performance becomes an issue. That, and Runescape is really old, so comparing a new game with it is stupid. That would be like me comparing a brand new Porche to a beat down '82 pickup.

Runescape cannot utilize full system resources like it's full screen C++ counterparts can. It has nothing to do with Runescape being made in Java. Remember, runescape is NOT the pinnacle of Java graphics.

  6. Re:Not uninstalling is a huge pet peeve of mine on AOL 9.0 Called Badware · · Score: 3, Interesting

Technically, the uninstall function works just fine. Remember, it's how they want it to work. It's their decision if they want crap lurking in your hard drive after the program has been wiped. Usually the data that remains after an uninstall just remembers the settings of the program. So if you were to install it back you would have the same preferences as before. However, that's not always the case.

  7. What makes it so special? on The Molecular Secrets of Cream Cheese · · Score: 0

So what? It's bacteria needs to die at a certain time to give it that new molecular structure or whatever... Is the taste even any better? *Sigh* Research money shouldn't be wasted like this. Pretty pointless.

  8. Re:what exactly is the news here? on Stem Cells in the Heart? · · Score: 5, Insightful

The big news is that the heart was thought that it couldn't repair itself after damage has occurred. Damage like minor heart attacks (which people often don't even know about, yet still have them) create scars on the heart. Over time, the build up of these scars reduces the hearts ability to function properly. Now we learn, that there may be new hope in a heart that could regenerate. Think of all the lives that could be saved. That's the big deal!

  9. Very true on Why There Are No Hit Indie Games · · Score: 2, Insightful

Very, very true... However, the big-shot movies don't learn anything from indie films like Napolean Dynamite and continue to overproduce movies that have a ridiculous budget. In a game though, the big-shot game developers can learn things from indie games like Spiderweb Software's: Avernum and Geneforge.
