    At the same time, the GPS unit is activated on the phone and the phone attempts to get a lock. No, the cell towers you are connected to triangulate on you.

    I check out e-books from my library at the county seat and have them sent directly to my kindle email address and thus my devices. I can check out e-books from ANY of my county library branches the same way. I did look to see if an item was "off the digital shelves" when checked out and that is in fact true...
    but now that I think about it, there is a copy left on the device after the DRM renders it unusable...
    So in the end how does that vary from the Internet Archive complaint?

    And there's nothing to be concerned about. Google hired some engineers from Intel to work on redesign of primate recognition - in fact, they hired the same old wise engineers who gave us the Meltdown vulnerability. What could possibly go wrong?

  17. I've seen a hypothesis that our universe is a 3d hologram essentially projected from a 2d source on a brane, (Yes, I spelled "brane" correctly, go look it up.) Of course, we have no idea if that's true or not, or if branes actually exist either. But even if the source of the universe is 2d, that doesn't mean the earth is "flat" in our perception of the universe.

    The part that worries me isn't just that they can't seem to figure out where the edge of the solar system is, it is that the conditions there do not match predictions, and yet nobody thought, "maybe we should scale back our predictions about things more than 10 AUs away" or something.

    If we can't predict Earth's radiation belts, and we can't predict the conditions at the edges of the solar system, why do we think we can accurately see 14 billion years away?

    OK, if you want to go down that road we could damage a bunch of theoretical disciplines...
    I'm alright with that in principal but it's gonna break my heart the first time I see a nicely dressed PhD holding a sign saying
    Will extrapolate sparse data for food!
