Having sold a lot of old laptops, I can tell you that the process of wiping an old disk (especially if it is less than 10GB) is sometimes just not worth it.
I just buy a whole bunch of new or refurbished hard drives, say of 20GB at a very good price, and just ship the laptops with these.
