"Nothing can be more frustrating than paying someone a pile of money for support and then get someone on line who knows nothing about product,"
To be fair this can happen in open source world as well (well, in the so called "commercial open source world"). But, overall, in general probability of fixing an issue quickly is higher when using open source software.
Anyone who has used Ubuntu lately on a desktop or a laptop can tell you that it is a strong altnernative to Red Hat. Red Hat will ignore Ubuntu at its peril.
Frankly, I find most of these discussions which try to argue whether a particular thing is art or not, a bit silly. Everything has a component of art in it. Of course, games with all their visual components are certainly art..
In-game adverstising is here to stay. With a whole generation of people hooked onto Games and TiVO, much of the $$$$ and attention will move to in-game advertising. I think the goods visible in games will simply become more and more branded. The bot in front of you will soon be running with Nike shoes.
"Microsoft Message Passing Interface (MS-MPI) implementation is fully compatible with the reference MPICH2"
I guess given the fact that Microsoft is pathetically behind Linux when it comes to high performance computing, they may actually play by the rules here.
Anyone has an insight on this one? Do they have a API lock-in strategy here as well?
In order to be successful with this, eBay will somehow need to build confidence with the publishers that they are indeed getting a good cut of the revenue that they send eBay's way.
I think the article looses further credibility by citing the rumous of Cisco buying Nintendo. That is like Boeing buying Disney - I am sure people can come up with synergies in that combination..

I fully agree. It is cool to discover something unexpected once in a while (just like in the real world), but overall it should be all about earning the results...
Microsoft may see it on the wall, their executives may say that the world is moving to SaaS (Software as a Service), but it will be impossible for Microsoft to take a leadership position in this area.
When you have a tens of billions of dollars coming in per year from one of your franchises (shrink wrapped applications), it is almost impossible to take even 5% hurt on that business to build a competing business which results in lesser revenue. (classic innvoator's dilemma).
Microsoft will probably do a lot better in a network/subscription based business model in the gaming world though (because they didn't have significant stream of $$ coming in from their classic shrink wrapped gaming software business).
Going after customers (who can easily switch to almost free services) sounds like such a smart strategy....
Better way to salvage the IPO is to serve the customers better.
To me this would be marriage of two companies which never could meet their full potential. Both had some sparks, but never quite followed-through to break-out into some sort of a leadership position. Such a merger would probably result in a mediocre company.
Amen!

Did you not have any vested options? Did you not get any $ for those?

It appears that gambling is becoming a key component here in order for getting any real $$$ from selling this stuff..
This report proves coffee is good, and tea is bad
hmm.. perhaps Starbucks is involved somewhere..
Since the application of this thing can easily require building a custom sphere, this seems a more cost-effective way to me.
It would be an interesting race between video-on-demand from incumbents like comcast, and internet video from upstarts like youtube, ifilm etc.
Scrabble helper with little in-game advertising :)
"Your favorite sweatshop (was "workout") companion."
Availability of relatively cheaper computing power with good bandwidth?
Some legal stuff?
Availability of some skill set?
The story curiously doesn't dwell much on virtual bots and issues posed by them. It focuses entirely on mechanical bots.

Really, you found the physics in the game to be good!!? Perhaps by the standards of Warcraft, may be..
