playing mp3s takes less than 1% of the cputime where it used to take more than 80% on a 486
Only the server guys ever cared about CPU usage. That's why a SCSI operation utilizing 20% over 60 seconds, beat an IDE operation using 30% for 50 seconds (in this case 3 seconds total time saved)
Speaking for all developers * , I think the obvious should be stated:
The customer base that matters are those paying $50 (and your past-due bills) by the end of the first week.
After that initial period, everything else is either gravy, break-even, or hardly matters if it had a bad showing.
The first-week folks have spoken many times, and they want games to last over 24 hours (or even 40 hours).
Even fifteen year old girls know not to give it all right away. Besides, giving the customer what he wants is
the proverbial dog catching the car and not knowing what to do with it once he gets it.
I'm having a hard time getting over paying $50 a title for games that were ported over with little thought.
Hundreds of millions of people around the world watch a Stallone or VanDamme movie with a "straight port"
of unimaginative, word-for-word translation. Hell, tens of millions can enjoy them with no translation whatsoever.
Mac users gotta stop worrying about style over substance; even opera is better half-understood in a native tongue.

* IANAD (but I play one on tv)
THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND:
A) The family
B) The U.S.
C) Democratic principles
D) All of the above
I could telecommute from my country home to India every day, although those 3pm meetings would be early morning killers.
