I use GnuCash, and it has the ability to import QIF files (Quicken). I don't use it, so I can't comment on how well it works.

Blech. It doesn't. I tried downloading my bank statement in QIF and read it into GnuCash. A $46.23 deposit showed up as (something like) a -46230000 deposit. No thank you.

Too late. I can remember buying sake in a self-heating can in Japan around 1985 or so.

The court decision on this case came down last summer (June or July), and the article cited is dated Oct. 3 -- OLD!. Not only that, but this decision is only the beginning of this case. It just gave the plainiff the right to sue -- whether she wins the suit or not won't be decided for years. I asked Joany, my next door neighbor, if she was going to move out of our modest townhouse community now that the suit was decided in her favor. She told me it will be years, if ever, before she sees any of the $20 million (half of the $40 million the University got out of her work) she's entitled to.

I'm using ReiserFS now and I'm really happy with performance/crash recovery. I have a lot of cat-related outages...

I installed xfs a week ago. Yesterday I wrote about it to my ex-office mate, saying I couldn't wait for a power failure. Got my wish this morning at about 4:00 a.m. My machine took 15 seconds to reboot. My colleague's machine with ext2 took nearly 3 minutes. Cool messages in the logs:

On the whole, you're probably right. But when was the last time you saw heated toilet seats with bidets, dryers, and wireless remote control units in North America? =)

Ah, the toilet argument again. People who bring up the issue of high-tech toilets in Japan usually fail to mention the fact that nearly 1/3 of the households in Japan don't even have flush toilets -- they have otoshi benjo, a kind of inside latrine in which wastes go through a hole in the floor into a tank, which is cleaned out periodically by a guy with a ``vacuum car.''
