My general rule for technology roll-outs is never buy version 1.0. The same will apply to the iPhone, and I'd recommend that to anyone who'll listen to me. So I agree with you the wise course of action is to wait and judge. Let the determined early adopters work out the kinks.

I'm not as concerned about tactile feedback, but I feel your concern is legitimate. I believe I have greater faith in Apple's design team. This isn't a product they rushed out the door, so I'm certain my faith is well-placed.

However, I completely disagree with your anecdotal statement about young people only looking at their typing in a casual glance. My 14-year-old step-daughter seemingly text messages constantly. In the morning, in the evening, late at night. She is completely focused on the message she's typing out and never removes her eyes from the screen until she's done typing. But then that's just my anecdotal evidence. We're probably both correct within our small sub-sets of humanity.

Regarding Babylon 5 ... the fifth season was hurt because the main story arc was truncated and crammed into the second half of the fourth season. Half-way through the production of the fourth season, they were informed the fifth season would not be picked up. I believe the syndication company folded. So JMS, who didn't want to cheat the fans, altered his schedule so he could provide an end to the main story arc.

It wasn't until they finished the fourth season that TNT acquired the rights to the fifth season. They'd already had a wrap party and begun breaking down the sets. They had to begin production on the fifth season immediately to meet the deadline, which is why they lost Claudia Christian, who was already moving towards other projects.

Season 5 was diminished by circumstance. If it had gone according to schedule, I'm sure it would have been as good as the first four seasons. Plus, we would have had the pleasure of seeing Susan Ivanova in charge of Babylon 5.

I'm curious about the Wii's software sales. Every non-gamer I know has 2-3 games... 1. Wii Sports 2. Wii Play 3. MAYBE one other game (usually Trauma Center) The only reason they get Wii Play is it comes with the controller and you need to have at least 2 controllers for the Wii. I also don't know any one that's bought more than 2 controllers.
Allow me to introduce myself, so you'll know someone who's bought more than 2 controllers and 3 titles. I'm married and a father/stepfather of four. We purchased the Wii around Thanksgiving and acquired 4 controllers (wimote & nunchucks) between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

As of today, we have the following titles:
Wii Sports, Smooth Moves, Raving Rabbits, Zelda, Downhill Jam, Trauma Center, Madden NFL, Super Monkey Ball.

As described by an earlier poster, my wife and I tend to fall into the Wii's demographic. We both work and have little time for dedicated gaming. Quite frankly, until the Wii my wife didn't game at all. The Wii has moved her into the casual gamer category. Our friends, all working couples with kids, either have bought a Wii or are considering it. None of them has an Xbox 360 or a PS3, nor do they intend to buy one.

Anecdotal evidence aside, I find it hard to believe you don't know any Wii owners with Zelda, it's the best selling Wii title. I'm not going to call bullshit, but I am going to say you are pulling from a very limited pool.

I have a 35" TV from the mid-90's which accepts three-lead component cable. So I guess it would be the "less need", unless newer means TVs made in the past 20 years.

Speaking of HDTV, you more or less need one of those sets for the Apple TV. It's not designed to connect via the older single-lead RCA video cable. You need a TV that takes either the three-lead component cable (the jacks are usually colored red, green and blue) or the all-digital HDMI cable. Newer standard-definition sets may have component inputs, but most TVs out there don't.

Apple iPod set to swap 'white box' for 'black box' as LoPresti launches data recorder version

    By Justin Wastnage

Apple Computer's popular iPod music player could become a flight data recorder (FDR) following an announcement by US light aircraft manufacturer LoPresti SpeedMerchants to introduce the device in the cockpit of its Fury piston aircraft.

The company says it plans the "full integration of the iPod into the Fury's avionics systems". The iconic 'white box' iPod will serve as a digital data recorder, nicknamed 'black boxes' by the general media. The iPod, with suitable software, acts as a hard disk with the ability to record over 500h of flight time data.

It was not immediately clear from the company's statement which parameters would be recorded and for what purpose. Recorders are currently used to collect data for maintenance purposes through system monitoring, for post-flight analysis in training and safety-monitoring, and, when suitably protected, for crash investigation.

Vero Beach, Florida-based LoPresti. "The iPod becomes the first truly portable, personal flight recorder with a huge recording capacity."

"This is a watershed technology for aviation," says LoPresti vice president of operations, RJ Siegel, "and we are delighted to be the first to bring it to market." The Fury (pictured below) will prove the concept, but once certificated, the iPod FDR could be deployed on other light aircraft.

The iPod can also act as an audio recorder, and can be used to capture two-way cockpit conversation and communication with air traffic control.

The iPod FDR would work with the patented iPod Dock Connector port on the bottom of the iPod, for which there is a large software developer community. "This is the perfect marriage of a consumer product to the aviation market" says Siegel. "The iPod has an ideal product spec for aviation. It's light and small, with very low power requirements and a simple interface. There are thousands of developers passionate about writing applications for the iPod. With such a large body of programmers we literally have no idea what the next great aviation application may be."

Parents buying computers for their kids for college/hs are going to care about one thing: Price.

As a parent, who bought a computer for my college-bound child last year, I cared about one thing ... her ability to use it daily without my presence.

My daughter is very intelligent. She graduated in the top 10 ... not top 10% ... of her graduating class of 600+ students. She's a freshman at a tier one school and she made Dean's List. I love her dearly, so I say this with total honesty and no ill-will. She lacks a great deal of common sense.

We had a Dell at home and the child crashed it every 6-9 months with all the crap she downloaded, either intentionally or not. Usually unintentionally. If it wasn't crashing, then it was running really, really slow. There were also the weekly claims of the printer being dead. Never was, but she could never understand how to establish the connection between the computer and the printer.

She wanted a Windows laptop for college because Windows is what she was used to. After much thought and discussion, we purchased her an iBook. She wasn't happy about it, and I even thought she might try and leave the iBook at home. One semester later, and only one technical call, and the iBook has been everything I wanted for my daughter away at school. There is no price for that, and certainly none that Dell could ever offer.
