If that happened due to a simple power outage then the server wasn't built right. I have 10 servers running a variety of MS Server os's. 2K-2K8, We have really crappy power here and have outages that outlast our UPS's all the time. I have never had to rebuild anything when my servers power down, they all power gracefully off and then back on.
I am aware there will be a certain amount of lag. I tried it at PAX this year, it was pretty good. no noticeable lag, I don't know how big a pipe they managed to snag, the rep was saying 5Mb/s was what was recommended(I didn't ask but assumed that that was 5Mb/s symmetrical). Also I'm not sure their pricing plan is going to work well, they are free this year for the states, but you have to buy each game or pay a rental fee. I'm okay with that providing if I cancel the service I get a physical copy of any games I purchased(I'll pay shipping) but I'm not sure how much I'm willing to pay for the privilege of being able to rent games, or buy games(apparently at no discount aside from digital cost breaks if the supplier provides them).
Nowhere in that tiny article does it state that the email was "full of abusive language". It states "threatening" and that's it. Regardless of that though, who cares? His response according to that article was "oh dear, it was me" when the police came to question him. Does that really sound like a threatening person to the president?
Or OnLive. It's in the states only right now but that is exactly what I'm looking forward to coming to Canada. I'm on board with renting games, (depending on some factors like cost).

Why are we still discussing the "rape" when both the girls denied that he raped them. They may proceed with charges of harassment/molestation which are a different thing altogether. Those charges mean very different things than they do in the US. If I remember correctly what they are currently alleging (or last I read) was that he didn't use a condom when they asked him to, or he took it off after he put it on without telling them or something to that effect.

I disagree that "regular" people shouldn't have those same protections. Why is a blog less informative than a newspaper? What if the blog breaks a big story, are they then at the mercy of the courts to reveal information that a newspaper reporter wouldn't have to reveal? How does that make sense? I think it's time we took the black and white rule book and toss it. It should be a situational thing.
I have a couple of buddy's who do this every day. They both consume about 8-12 beers a day, they both hold down full time job's. It's not unheard of. I could totally see 10% drinking to that degree. Don't forget most of those who wrote 1 a day probably didn't take into account birthday's/christmas/other holiday and used what their usual daily average is.
How does the license style make it "easier to actually write that software in the first place."? I understand you may have more people interested in writing the code if it's able to be closed source, but that doesn't make it easier to code.
How about a Safe and Stable section, and a bleeding edge section which has untested un-verified apps that the more knowledgeable of us could install and play with. That way they get the approval process for the bumbling idiot too.
Okay, 1) there is a massive difference between bullying and rape(and yes I get the point you were putting across)
2) I disagree with the point you were trying to get across.
What I took from jsebrech's point is to help the victim. Not punish them. in the situtation of a rape we(usually family/friends) get the person that was raped counseling, to help them move past it, and gain back some of the confidence that was lost. In the case of bullying I think we need to do the same sort of thing. Help people move beyond the point where the bully's see them as easy pickings. If they have the self-confidence that people develop after doing something like marital arts, or even just thearpy(as some people wont like marital arts at all) they are far less likely to be bullied.
Incorrect. Putting words in anothers' mouth is extremely rude behavior, so unless you can point to some place where I said this treatment shouldn't be pursued I await your appology.
First I just want to say this shouldn't be off-topic, we are discussing his reaction to the topic and was answering a question I asked of him. Anyway.
I wasn't putting words in your mouth I was asking a question, sorry if it came across that way. I got the impression that's what you were saying was going to happen. Especially from your second paragraph above
"Now, what happens to a strain of infection that can't find a host? It stops replicating and dies out. Eventually all of the HIV virus that's still alive is from the 10% you weren't able to treat, and at that point you're immunizing against 0% of new infections. In exchange you may have a much smaller infected population... until the disease starts spreading again."
It just seemed like a fairly obvious point and the only reason to bring it up would be that you weren't in favor of it.
so you want to not save a crap load of people from being infected now because we wouldn't be able to save a crap load of people from being infected in the future?
Where in my post did I say I thought I could text and drive? I don't think I can and I agree that I don't think anyone can. I just don't think we need additional laws to combat texting while driving when we already have laws that cover dangerous driving practices.
No it wouldn't. You think that if she is stupid enough to blow through a red and ignore that law, that she's going to pay any attention whatsoever to a ban on texting? The fact that she almost hit you, blew through a red and obvisouly wasn't paying attention is a combination of enough factor's for reckless driving and she could have her license pulled. We just need to start using the laws we have. I completly agree with Dragoniz3r and kimvette, we have enough laws. No law is going to protect you from a moron, it will just make them pay after the fact and possibly discourage others from being the same type of moron.
Probably. I think they all have a common ancestor along the way. Like the guy I did some consulting for that insisted on the best computer in the office and then never turned it on. His secratary used to print out his e-mail and leave it on his desk because he didn't know how to check it and refused to be taught.
You would be surprised how many there are. I work as a network admin and I have dealt with some.... interesting?.... people. One emailed me to tell me their email wasn't working. Yes I know we have all read it in a comic but it's true. I had one of the CFO's I did some work for fill in and almost send a scam bank email form. He at the last second called me to see if I thought it was legit. sigh. I have had people call me up in a panic cause the system was "doing something illegal and they didn't want to get in trouble" (illegal exception errors). I could go on and on. This doesn't surprise me at all. A lot of people when it comes to anything to do with a computer are struck dumb immeditatly and stop using whatever intelligence they have.
I gotta say I disagree with you. Before the advent of steam all my friends and I used to lend games, hell before burners were really common I had a PC game rental place right down the street. I still lend my buddy games and he me if we have bought the retail box. We also (we are really good friends) have each other's steam accounts and log in all the time to play a game he has that I don't or vice versa. EB games also has a used PC games section so they are re-sellable as long as you bought the physical product and not a steam download. I think the culture your talking about may just be talked about more in the console crowd but it's definately alive and well for the PC's from the view behind my monitor.
What if my password was a confession?

If only there was an "unfortunate but true" mod.

ya I realized after I posted that I was a moron.
Doh. I'm a moron. I just saw the line. somehow I missed it when reading. sigh, more coffee please
uhhh it's on the BBC too. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-11296303

Just zoomed in on your comment in chrome and it re-formatted the page to fit the new width of my screen. perhaps you should upgrade from IE 6? ;)

Um. I'm playing all my games from steam on a 64 bit win7 box. No problems at all, even older games run just fine.
