  5. Re:Giving high schoolers Linux is a bad idea on Linux Desktops Catching On In Education · · Score: 3, Interesting

I can't use Windows anymore - there just too much missing in Windows. For example:
    - virtual desktops - just LOVE them
    - gnome-vfs - seemlessly edit files/watch vids/listen to music over ssh/ftp/smb/whatever
    - powerful terminal for automated tasks - not much to explain
    - software with clean interface - don't you just hate those vendor-specific apps on windows of which everyone looks as if it was from a different story?
    - no bloatware out-of-box - when you buy laptop you usually get system preloaded with trials, demos, etc. and with 'rescue disk' which also rescues all the demo software. so either buy another copy of windows to get a clean desktop at the beginning or just spend a lotta time cleaning up the crap
    - on linux, all my config files are stored in my home directory, and pretty much forces me to store all my data in one place - I know this can be set on windows, too, but it's extra effort

It took me a long time to switch from Windows to Linux and feel comfortable.
But it would take me _MUCH_ longer to switch back.

  6. Noooo on Microsoft Looking to Run Windows on OLPC · · Score: 5, Insightful

I can't quite imagine how this would work. Windows is a much harder OS to maintain in the long run. All this virus, spyware and adware crap - those poor kids' lives are bad enough without it.
Besides that, I don't trust MS's intentions. I bet they are now working on how to squeeze some money out of this in the future. This is not exactly what I've expected from OLPC.

  7. Re:Asshats on Russia Agrees To Shut Down AllOfMP3.com · · Score: 1

No, the music on the radio is mostly a pop-culture money-making crap. There's just sooo much beyond that.
Libraries do a pretty good job, it's not music tho.
And people like you miss the very important detail that not everyone is capable of creating music and not everyone can afford to learn how to make music. Besides that almost everyone would like to listen to music, but not everyone has to be a musician, we need other professions, too.
There ARE people who work 10h/day (or more) to make just enough money to feed their families and pay for basic stuff like bills and education of their children. Tell them that they should buy a guitar and start playing.
Music shouldn't be free, but it should me much cheaper!
And imagine that there are countries where 15 USD for an average Joe is more like 50 USD for an average American.

I guess this is pointless, there are always people who have more money and can't (don't want to?) understand others.

Yeah.. If they can't afford it why should we care? They are the worthless part of our society, they have no rights to make use of our culture! They have no rights to enjoy their miserable life, let's force them to buy some instruments instead of food, so that they see how hard it is to be rock star!

    Think again.

  9. Please keep in mind... on Upgrading to Ubuntu Edgy Eft a "Nightmare" · · Score: 2, Interesting

... that this was not supposed to be production-ready release.

It had a very short development cycle (only 4 months, because of dapper's delay).
It was supposed to be 'edgy' and an unstable entry point for future next-gen Ubuntu releases.
It's not even available in Shipit!
Dapper is recommended for a casual user, Edgy is for a little more advanced users, who know what to do when something breaks.

So while your opinions are very welcome, don't blame Ubuntu guys for screwing up the distro. It's just the way it was planned to be :-)

    Cheers!

The fact that you don't use it doesn't make it unimportant. I can do very fast switching between tabs with alt+number which is VERY convenient and much MUCH faster than flipping thru windows with alt+tab. Tabbed browsing is what I miss the most when I have to use a Windows box (unless there's firefox installed :)).

They should pay more attention to the interface first and get a good usability specialist. Basic thing are much harder to do than they should be, like there is no keyboard shortcut for automatic sum in Calc! After googling I found out that you actually need to create a macro to do that. Maybe this one was fixed in the most recent releases (haven't checked), but there MANY things like that they should focus on.
