Although my point was just that you can do more with modern gaming systems than just watch DVD's, I still decided to try and justify my mistake and came across this which I thought you'd enjoy. http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/07/dvd-player-inside-a-nes/ no SNES but close enough.

Not for what you get. A console does not provide any real functionality outside of being a DVD player. PCs offer a very high level of functionality outside of gaming.
Sure that's true if you're talking about say your SNES, but I have a modded xbox that does an awful lot for me aswell as a 360 which I use to play all of my media not just DVD's and is networked quite well with my linux box and media server. The way I see it, is I can spend a grand on a nice laptop to do most things i want, have the portability I desire, and have a gaming system for comparatively cheap, that will run 1080p on a 42" tv and not have to churn out 3grand plus upgrades every few months.

I am never sure what prompts people to say this. I've not had any sort of driver and or compatibility problems for years now. Are there some people that are still running MS DOS and trying to game out there?
Congrats on the lack of driver problems but I'd say the majority of PC gamers have had atleast some sort of issue with drivers and having to patch the game because of some strange rendering error and it all comes back to simplicity. Why would I want to spend time installing a game and having it take up space on my hd, prevent me from properly multitasking (doing something processor heavy) when I can go to my console, stick the game in the tray, and play it as is?

It's obvious you're very much into PC gaming and I also love PC games, they can't be beat especially with genres like RTS but the OP had a point and market share shows it. The only games really doing well right now on PC's are online RPG's, most other games have relatively low sales especially if a console counterparts is available to compare it to. That's the market we live in and that's what people want.

Linux gaming will probably always be dominated by games run through WINE since developers just don't see a justification to support 2% of a market share that isn't even that big to begin with in comparison to other areas like console gaming. I know it's not something we want to hear but it's an industry like anything else and there's just no profit in it, it would be a favor to us and they would be lucky to make back their investment. Even Apple is having issue getting gaming back on their OS and only recently have had any kind of break through.

Why aren't more linux users gamers? We are, we just use or PC's for other things and went out and got a console for about the price of a good vid card.

Well animals rely on much more than physical static shape to distinguish things like other animals vs rocks. There are a whole array of senses to rely on and real visual cues like style of movement, speed, etc. that have to be taken into account. I think this actually interesting indicating that dogs can genuinely tell the difference between a static image of a landscape and a dog showing that based on just shape they can really tell the difference.

I second this statement, back when I first started using Linux (Ubuntu 5.04) I had an essentially dead partition for a while because I killed X by trying to install new NVIDIA graphics drivers without first uninstalling the old ones in synaptic. I finally got fed up after a few months of having an essentially useless (to me anyway) OS and found a fix but it was a terrible set back for me. I have since broken X at least a dozen times and have fixed it through the command line but having been in that initial "wtf do I do now" phase, I can really appreciate the value of this feature for n00bs and non-power users. Ubuntu display settings and graphics modes area always having to be fiddled with and there is so much that can go wrong that I'm actually a little surprised that it took them this long to come out with this feature. Hopefully now they'll introduce a nice GUI based xorg.conf prompt for default resolutions/dual displays etc. so you don't end up seeing this bulletproof-X quite so much.

I agree, but IMO this is being done to make an example out of her. She definitely won't spend any time in jail, and her fine will be minimal if she gets a fine at all, but the theater is trying to make a statement to any pirates out there that "hey, we're willing to get the book thrown at this innocent girl, don't think we won't do the same to you." It's the same thing for some of the outrageous drug possession laws in certain states where a person can in theory server more time for having an illegal substance on them than someone convicted of man slaughter. It's not that "the time fits the crime" it how hard politicians and lobbying groups are pushing to have specific acts stopped.

"A private copying levy (also known as blank media tax or levy) is a government-mandated scheme in which a special tax or levy ..." (your wikipedia.org link). Funny, next time you should probably read things you link to before trying to chastise someone about the terminology they decide to use, this is not a tax? It was Canada's solution to pirated music so yes, artists could get some money. When you've already legally purchased a CD there's no issue about artists not getting monetary compensation since you've already purchased that CD. This didn't even come into play in Canada until Napster was fairly popular and it was our solution to compensating artists rather than suing the individuals with the copied music. The issue here was with music that was in fact pirated which is why in Canada it's not illegal to download music. Yes, lobbyists are still putting pressure on our government to make downloading music illegal and they probably always will but this was our solution to compensate artists. I also remember in 1997 when the levy/tax/more money for end product, was put into place there were a number of stories on the CBC and CTV describing this as essentially a piracy tax.

I am actually Canadian and I personally don't see a problem with this. Considering what the RIAA gets away with in the US, I think that provided they don't come after Canadians with lawsuits as well as this tax, it's a plus. This is nothing new anyway we've been paying an extra tax on blank media for quite some time now and realistically I think the vast majority of it is used to copy media which is in some way infringing on a copyright somewhere. At least this way they will stay off our backs about piracy and not go suing everyone and their sister for X amount of dollars they claim to be losing. For those who disagree with this levy that's perfectly fine but I'd much rather pay a few more dollars for an iPod and have it done with than hear about ridiculous lawsuits against old ladies who can't even turn on their computers let alone pirate music.
