especially when referring to a qualitative attribute such as visibility; what's visible to one person may not be visible to another
Right. That's why the definition of "visible light" should rely more on some species-wide feature than on some feature that varies wildly from one person to another.
It would be accurate to say people emit some light within the wavelength range that is normally visible.
It would be inaccurate to say people emit visible light.
This statement is exactly what I wanted to hear when I posted my first reply.:-)
Usually "visible light" means "electromagnetic radiation with wavelength lying in (approximately) 380-750nm range". At least that's what they taught us in the university. Somehow, I find this definition much more logical than yours, no offense meant.
This story indeed deserves to be tagged "suddenoutbreakofcommonsense". Producing such an expensive aircraft in large numbers is a pretty dumb idea: I'm not sure there are enough important targets on the Earth for a squadron of these to be cost-effective. UAVs FTW!
I think that what Gabe suggests is quite reasonable, to say the least. People do pay for games right now, even those that they play once and those that won't be available for their multi-Cell watchphone in 15 years. Think of it as an early preorder method. Think of it as of a way of listening to customers instead of PHBs. After all, if people pay the devs for the right to tell them what kind of a game they want to play when it's done, it is good. Besides, this will even massively boost sales to those who didn't invest early (because the game is more likely to be good/popular).
Not all Nokia phones use Symbian. However, with Qt for S60 on the horizon, Symbian-specific skills are likely to become irrelevant. I strongly suspect that Nokia will be pushing Qt as the main toolkit/API for their [smart]phones, after which they will be free to dump the steaming pile that is Symbian and switch to Linux.
Once again, I'm not saying that Nokia is in trouble: with their apparent migration towards Linux + Qt, they will be fine. I'm saying that open sourcing Symbian isn't likely to save it, and probably isn't even intended to.
I don't know... maybe because people will continue buying WinMobile handsets for the same reason they continue to buy Windows PCs? Getting access to Windows-only apps, that is, and a familiar (no matter how bad) user experience.
Look, that's definitely good news (especially the part of the Symbian Foundation using EPL instead of inventing some special license of their own). But does it really matter that much now? I mean that writing apps for Symbian is a horrible experience (as has been highlighted multiple times here on Slashdot, too), and now that Android has arrived and brought a much more friendly programming environment, this step is too little, too late.
Where did I say that I think that Obama is interested in nuking Russia? The few remaining launch sites might be as well disabled with conventional weapons. And sorry, I don't work in the White House or the Pentagon so I cannot confidently say if Obama plans to attack Russia at some point in the future or not. Do you? Because if not, it's you who's behaving like an arrogant and naive blockhead here.
From what I know, that wannabe dictator attempted to organize a country-wide voting. That alone is hardly a crime. Now if he were caught faking the results of the said referendum, THEN we would be able to call him names. Did I miss something?
As far as I know, Iran and China are no friends. The mere fact that they both aren't fond of the US doesn't automatically make them allies: Iran would happily tear down Israel, China, and promote its influence in the nearby countries (especially those already devastated by a prolonged conflict...) rather than build ICBMs to attack a rather dangerous adversary in the opposite hemisphere.
Keeping in mind the long list of US invasions (which were carried out both under Republicans and under Democrats in nearly equal measure AFAIK), would you bet that the current administration won't launch a surprise attack against Russia as soon as their nuclear arsenal can be taken care of with the US antimissile defenses? I know that I wouldn't...
Yes, there is. You launch a thousand missiles, fifty get shot down, you own your enemy. You launch a dozen missiles (all you have), all of them get shot down... then what? Or even better, the enemy easily destroys your 12 missile silos with the first strike and you don't even have anything to start with.
Also people seem to be missing that similar events are currently occuring in Georgia (Internet connection mysteriously failing a day before an announced protest demonstration, raids on opposition leaders, opposing TV channels being shut down, ad infinitum). The reason you probably don't know about it at all? The Georgian government is an ally of the United States. By the way, the people currently controlling Georgia came to power during a US-sponsored coup (also known as "Rose revolution", AFAIK). And yet another recent US covert operation that installed an oppressive but pro-American goverment was the Orange revolution in Ukraine.

Computer makers would then have the option to add the browser back in, ship another browser or ship multiple browsers
So, in other words, the status quo will be preserved: Microsoft will likely enter into agreements with OEMs to put IE back in (while keeping Chrome and Firefox out), which will only result into some additional revenues for European OEMs and tax collectors. Nothing else to see here, move along.

I certainly hope that you are in favor of the Taiwanese, Basque, and Tamil Tigers having their independence
Will it be impolite of me if I add Kosovar Albanians to this list?

Why is [my] grandparent post modded flamebait? Some guys with lots of mod points and free time at their hands?

Here. Now, be a gentleman and keep your word. By the way, her page looks promising. :)

Don't panic: usually guys with small sticks buy an iPhone or a Hummer to compensate for the size. Oh, wait a minute...

Putin, after all, prefers to use proxy countries for that.
Sure he does. Does it mean that the US don't?

Just look at the Internet you are surfing on (ArpaNET)
Actually, the point about Arpanet's involvement in the birth of the Internet is debated. See Ian Peter's excellent research here.
As a someone put it, "Research is the transformation of money into knowledge. Innovation is the transformation of knowledge into money".
no phone in the history of the universe has had a front facing video camera
You are wrong: Nokia N82 has both a 5Mpixel camera at back and a 352x288 front cam specifically for video calls.
Yeah, right until "Your browser is not supported."
