Piracy is one of the greatest forms of advertising. In some businesses, it's called "word of mouth". Growing up, many of the products I was introduced to, and subsequently became loyal customers of, was thanks to "piracy" of one sort or another. Back then, nobody saw it as a bad thing.

Piracy is NOT the same thing as "word of mouth" "Word of mouth" is when someone plays the game (watches movie, listens to music) then tells their friends. They can do this whether they pirate the game or not.
And YES it was a seen as a "bad thing" back then. The rule of thumb for the copiers was copy all you want. The rule of thumb for the people selling the stuff is "DON'T PIRATE."

Every time a movie is released on DVD or shown in the theaters it's copyright date is extended.

That isn't how copyright works. Copyright has to do with the date of creation/publication/release. When the movie is first released the copyright date starts to tick. The copyright date gets extended when the owners go and lobby to congress and get the date extended. Now if they CHANGE the movie and rerelase it, the new stuff is copyrighted on the new date. BUT the original movie's copyright time keeps ticking and doesn't change.

I'm against things like TSA. Personally I don't think they need any kind of security for boarding a plane. But this is a little bit different. For one thing you are not required to attend the super bowl. Unlike air travel, you really are there by choice.

There is always security at large scale sporting events. Did you know that most large arenas have their own holding cells? Sure it is mostly for drunk spectators, but still. While this may be overkill, this is not the same security theater you see at the airport.

I consider myself a Libertarian, and yes I make a living because of copyright. I also think that 100+ years is too long, I also think that piracy is rampant. A LOT of people don't realize it is wrong.

But the general feeling I get from the average slashdotter is "copyright is evil because I want free stuff." I hear time and again how the publishers are screwing the creators, or the general public, so the slashdotter is going to stick it to the man and copy the item anyways. Or the price is too high, so they will copy it. As long as they get their tv and music and games for free.

I think that things like SOPA are bad. But not that copyright should be abolished. I also think there are a lot of people here who thing they way you think in that it is a matter of principle. Apple has always been "cool" or did you forget the Macintosh, and the 1984 Superbowl commercial?

The reason that over the years Apple was able to make and retain such intense customer loyalty was because they chose to focus on making sure that every aspect of their products made the user's life a little bit easier.

Apple products are no more easier or harder to use the Microsoft's. But Apple has done a tremendous job building up a cult like following. That is why they retain such intense customer loyalty. People didn't line up because the products worked, they lined up because it was "cool."
