A couple of years ago, I moved to a suburb which has a duopoly of ComCast & AT&T. I held my nose and signed up for ComCast cable internet service. I was careful to get a cable modem from their approved list.
Two years later, the modem got really flakey and needs replacement. I checked the web site, and the list of cable modems there is so old most of them aren't made any more.
So I wasted cellular minutes trying to get some semblance of current information from customer "service". I eventually found out that there is a list of approved models of cable modem which is less obsolete than the other, but I can't have a copy because it's secret!

My own usual demonstration is to hold out my hand and ask for their wallet/purse. "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be afraid of."
