Would you honestly notice a difference in fps when both processors were running relatively close in frames per second. Maybe the conroe can get 20 more fps per second, but is that worth the extra money. Amd is notorious for being less expensive then Intel. Either way you could run the top of the line games, its just a question of which allows you to get more bang for your buck. If Amd sets a signifigantly competitive price, then it really doesn't matter how well the processors perform, people will choose whichever one provides the most performance per dollar value. While the Conroe beats the Fx in the performance battle, it still has not yet won the war. Let the price battle begin.

For example, I know that while some websites only have a password security meter, some sites, I think I saw this on gmail, will not let you set a password that registers as weak in their password strength meter.

I think that Debian needs to learn from this mistake and start making some serious changes. There are a lot of people running Debian linux distros that are now vulnerable and this includes businesses depending on Debian's security. You would think that something this serious would be better protected.

  16. it makes sense on End of Win 98 Support May Boost Desktop Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know plenty of people still running Windows 95 and 98, not because they are too lazy, but rather because they don't feel like paying, or don't have the financial resources, to purchase the new version of Windows, especially when they know that they can update to a newer, but not newest version of Windows, for less money. This makes Linux a very strong competitor in this field. I have had numerous friends ask me to help them set up Linux distros on their computer simply because the free aspect is so appealing. Once people see that they can update to a new version of Linux, one capable of doing practically anything and more then a Windows box, people who are technologically literate, or have technologically literate friends, will begin to switch, and if people switch to Linux, they won't be purchasing a newer (say from 95 to 2000) version of Windows.

For those who say that the linux destktop has a long way to go, when is the last time they have used a linux system? There is always room for improvement, but I would say that the more recent versions of linux (ubuntu 6.06 dapper for example or fedora core 5) have come insanely far in terms in desktop support. I have ubuntu x32 installed on my desktop, and I honestly say that I rarely ever use Windows Xp on my desktop anymore, because for almost any task, (yes, even gaming) I can use ubuntu and do anything far more efficiently if not just as well as it can be done on a Windows machine.

While I don't believe that this will be a massive blow to Microsoft, or even a paper cut for that matter, It still will convert some people over, and a few people converting can be a indicator of the times. Microsoft will need to be careful in the future to try not to alienate too many people. Otherwise the paper cut might turn into a gash.

  17. Apple's Situation on Nerds Switching from Apple to Ubuntu? · · Score: 1

Most people do not want to spend a lot of money on a notebook or desktop, especially if they could be buying a much better notebook or desktop for the same amount of money. Apple notebooks and desktops are very expensive, mostly because if you want to run OS X, you have to buy the hardware from Apple, therefore no competition = monopoly = they can charge whatever they want. This high price discourages new people to switch to OS X (would you pay 2k for a notebook with an os you have never tried before??) and also makes current mac users give in to the temptations of Linux in the fact that its very similar, free, and will run on even some of the cheapest notebooks. In fact, I have seen KDE setups that looked almost identical if not the same as OS X.

If Apple doesn't want to lose more people, they should try more competitive pricing or at least make some incentive to bring the Mac users back to Apple.

Does it really surprise you that they will try to destroy pirated versions of Windows? If you don't like it, there are alterantives for Windows out there, so instead of complaining, switch. I don't see what the big deal is. M$ has every right to protect their intellectual property (although maybe they should me more forthcoming about what their software does). The Linux kernel has gotten to the point where most Linux distros can do everything a Windows box can do. The only reason people don't switch is because of this "difficulty" stigma that Linux has surrounding it. In reality however, figuring out how to do things in Linux require just some simple reading and patience.

Alright, I'm done ranting. The point is, yes of course a company thats job it is to make money is going to try to fight piracy in any way possible (regardless of how underhanded you think it is). But the great thing about the OS field is that there are alternatives. If you don't like how Windows is running, switch, simple as that.
