  1. Shop vac! on IRobot Looj Gutter Cleaning Robot Review · · Score: 1

I tried the metal guards, but pine needles like sticking in the.

Now I use a Shop-Vac with 20foot of extensions and a 180 u bend on the end. Works well, and the extensions I got even have a side handle on them to help with hefting the tube up and controlling it.

Now I don't bother with ladders...

  2. Re:While you're at it - light tubes! on DIY Solar Resources? · · Score: 1

The phrase you're looking for is CRI (color rendering index). There are a ton of low-CRI crap lighting, but if you're willing to spend it, you can do better:

    http://www.handhelditems.com/5500k-color-corrected-light-fluorescent-lamp-photo-bulb-p-5711.html
[Good quality light. No manufacturer anywhere on it so...]

[Claims. But I haven't dealt with this company]

There's others out there, but if you get a CRI in the 90+ range, it will be better than most (Walmart are ~60 last time I researched; bad enough it's hard to find out what they really were). I'll agree with the light tubes as being a good idea, but I haven't used them yet. A poster further down said something about metal halide-- the largest problem with MH bulbs is their output goes down *drastically* as they age; we're retrofitting 8xT-8 bulbs in a few factories with good results.

  4. Re:we use SVN on The Future of Subversion · · Score: 1

I've paid for VisualSVN ($50/dev...), and it seems to be well worth it to me.
The biggest thing that I'm having trouble is wrapping my head around "how to use it" -- the "Make a copy to Tag a release" seems funny to me (I understood CVS, but hated its shortcomings).

VisualSVN's windows server is also good (it uses AD accounts. yay!), even though it doesn't support all the bells and whistles.

    So my current toolset is:
        VisualSVN Server [$0]
        TortiseSVN [free]
VisualSVN Client [$50/dev, but a free foss license exists] for Visual Studio integration.

It isn't baked into the CCVS (or whatever they call it), but it works (unlike Ankh).

It still has the same warts that SVN has (initial version, you have to commit & then checkout ?!), but it keeps me happier.

One thing you have to watch out for in those carbon-fiber spheres is diffustion; Hydrogen diffuses through everything (even metal -- hydrogen embrittlement), but there may be a good way of making a good filling structure.

  6. Somewhat off-topic - CMY filters instead of BRGR on Stanford Team Developing Super 3D Camera · · Score: 1

Why aren't more cameras using CMY filters instead of BRGR filters?

The biggest downside I see of current cameras is that they need a lot of light for an image; if you can get 2 photons/color I would think that you would end up with a much more sensitive camera, but I've only seen that in some astronomy cameras...

I wonder if dedicating the book would work. Probably not, but...

You download the book, and the front page says "dedicated to WrongHeaded. Available to others at www.isoldthis.com."

Then again, I don't pay attention to the credits, so that probably won't work.

If it's "printable", and "works on any possible eBook reader", I don't think the DRM would hold....

Cannibalism has issues with prions (mad-cow disease)...
        Extermination leads to loneliness...

"Have fun. Don't hurt anybody." takes on more power the deeper you go...

Even without religion, we have purpose (or at least are driven to several goals, eg):
To Exist Beyond Death (everybody wants to bequeath a legacy -- even without an heir)
To Parent / Nurture their children (see above, but also - I want my kids to be better than I am)
To hoard and amass great wealth (see 1 & 2... also, I'd like to live in luxury)

Sometimes, these goals hurt people or help others. Later, many believe their legacy should include others loving them, so they try to undo some of their assholeishness (cf. Carnegie)...

Dunno... one of my acquaintances had a kid with a siezure problem (he would stop breathing and fall over).

Their solution was a Nefoundlander (sp?) -- big hairy dog that drools a lot. One day it happened, and the dog picked the kid up, put him on his back (err... they're like 3 feet tall) and carried him home.

I've been impressed with their manners and abilities, but I am still hesitant with that level of trust. Then again, their son wouldn't be able to participate in after-school sports otherwise...

But I like the Alpha transformer you mentioned as well as the power-keg idea... This is in the natural emission mode, so you can't turn it off, right? (Then again, I wouldn't mind hooking it to the grid when I'm not using it)
