  1. Re:OS 10.1 MS Word v X and fun ! on OS X 10.1 Coming Today (Sorta) · · Score: 1

Actually, MSIE/Mac does not run better on any version of Mac OS, including Mac OS X than it does on Windows. While it is faster in 10.1 that it was in 10.0, it is at least an order of magnitude slower on Mac OS X compared to Windows and the JavaScript support is not on parity with Windows.

It would be 6. 5 is Mac OS X Server, a.k.a. Rhapsody 5.x (a.k.a. Darwin 0.3); the 5.x was actually 5 because it comes after OpenStep 4.x. 6 is Mac OS X, a.k.a. Darwin 1.x. Except that Mac OS X is much more than OpenStep, so maybe NeXTStep 10 wouldn't be too far off kilter. :)

  3. Re:Always have had BSD/Darwin sessions.... on Apple to Include BSD in WWDC · · Score: 2

Correct. There has been a "BSD in Mac OS X" session at WWDC for the past three years, mostly about the userland side of things. I demoed at the first and presented the last two of them, and even invited Jordan Hubbard to do past of the talk last year, to give us all an update of what FreeBSD is up to and how that might related to Darwin. I even came up with some cool demos, and QuickTime demos can be a hard act to follow. There are typically also related sessions on other parts of Darwin, including one on the kernel, which includes material on both Mach and BSD; another on filesystems, which are based on the BSD VFS layer; another on I/O Kit which is Darwin's driver model, different from BSD; and also one on Networking, which also lives in the BSD side of the kernel. WWDC is about Apple technology. Mac OS X is the big thing, and BSD is most decidely a part of the picture.

  7. Re:Security? on MacOS X Beta Sneak Preview · · Score: 1

All network services in Mac OS X are disabled by default, which isn't to say that the system is known to be secure; it's got a lot of new code, much of which has never previously lived on a Unix base and it will take some time to understand all of the implications thereof. There will undoubtedly be lessons to learn, but the obvious things are being addressed as they are discovered.

  8. Developer Tools is a separate CD on MacOS X Beta Sneak Preview · · Score: 1

Which makes some sense, given that most end users are not developers. My understanding is that Apple developers will get the developer tools either via CD or by download, depending on the level of support you purchased. ADC Online memberships are free (go to http://developer.apple.com/ and sign up), and that membership should allow you to download the tools when they are ready.

  9. Re:Darwin is Unacceptable for GNUstep, Spindletop on Apple Builds Darwin For Intel · · Score: 1

This statement is wholly inconsistent with a conversation I had with Adam a while ago about how we might share code in the future.

Given that we recently started opening up code (the CoreFoundation container classes) which is directly of interest to GNUStep, it would be unfortunate if the GNUStep project members actually feel as you do about Apple, since I think that GNUStep will progress much faster if we play nice (we do know a thing or two about OpenStep at Apple). Since I don't know who you are, I won't assume that you speak for the project.

My impression was that GNUStep started on GNU/Linux because it's the closest thing to GNU available. Given that Darwin didn't exist when GNUStep started, is still in high flux, doesn't (quite) yet support X Windows, and favors BSD tools to GNU tools, it really doesn't surprise me that GNUStep didn't start on Darwin. I'm OK with that.
