  5. Installs are still going on on Microsoft Forces Desktop Search On Windows Update · · Score: 1

I suspect that many of the earlier posters who claimed that their systems are OK, are still in for a surprise. Chatting to people in a large company it seems that this crap is still being rolled out. Some people got it the day before yesterday, some yesterday, some today and IT complained that email is slow this morning. So I guess MS got millions of angry phone calls already and they are in for many more.

  8. Greenpeace is in it for the money on Greenpeace Admits Targeting Apple Grabs Headlines · · Score: 1

The alarmist headline grabbing fear mongering publicity stunts are just to make money. On a credibility scale they are right up there with Rent A Mob and Rent A Crowd.

  9. Re:Interesting, but it doesn't matter on New Password Recovery Technique Uses CPU and GPU Together · · Score: 2, Insightful

All password checks on my machines take 10 seconds minimum. A strategic 'sleep(10)' does the trick. There is no need to calculate MD5 hashes repeatedly to waste an attacker's time. A nice sleep() allows the server to go do something more useful.

  10. But does it run Linux? on New Password Recovery Technique Uses CPU and GPU Together · · Score: 1

Seriously, it looks like I should boot Linux on the GPU and use the CPU for general I/O. Then my PeeCee will be 25 times faster. See the cool ASCII graphics...

  11. Only one taker on Microsoft Finally Bows to EU Antitrust Measures · · Score: 5, Interesting

The Samba project will likely buy a copy. Everyone else will simply use Samba then as before. I don't think MS will recover their fine from selling that specification.

  12. Re:don't be sure on Storm Worm Being Reduced to a Squall · · Score: 1

"Freak out and delete it immmediately." Nope - in my experience, OSX users have no idea what their root (or for that matter any) password is. They logged in some time a few years ago, and never rebooted or logged out again, so they just don't know - got it on a piece of paper in a drawer somewhere...

  16. Don't we need a tether first? on Space Elevator Teams Compete for NASA Prizes · · Score: 2, Insightful

If one can make a strong enough tether, then the obvious solution would be to leave the big heavy motors on the ground and run the tether around space based pulley, but I guess that is too simple to get funding. KISS just doesn't cut it to secure government money...

  17. Re:Metric to Imperial measurement error? on Crashed Spacecraft Yields Data on Solar Wind · · Score: 1

"waiting for Vista with baited breath" Ugh, if you live at the coast and know the smell fish bait, then this is probably a very fitting allusion.

  19. They have already upped MS on Apple's Missed Opportunity With Leopard Delay · · Score: 1

Linux and Mac systems are better than XP and a lot better than Vista. They don't need any more advancement. All they need are users.

The big question is when will Vista be ready for desktop use?

  20. Uhh, *solar* wind on Crashed Spacecraft Yields Data on Solar Wind · · Score: 1

Solar wind comes from the sun, so why should the particles be any different than the measurements taken from the sun? It is nice to confirm that solar wind really comes from the sun, but hasn't that been confirmed a long time ago by simply looking at the direction of the flow?

Wow, that is just so terribly uninformed. You should seriously visit your local library and read some history. Religion has poor ethics and is the chief cause of war.

Maybe you should start with Aristotle's Nicomachian Ethics, followed by Voltaire's Phylosophical Dictionary.
