I'm from Slovenia and this year, it seems like we're in the news (and that's big, because we're sooooo small that any little thing about us in foreign media makes us go crazy). First the soccer thing, where we didn't loose to the USA and England, almost ending up in next round and now the biggest botnet seems to be coded here "on the sunny side of Alps". The last part is probably not good publicity but hey, even better, we're bad enough for FBI, how's that for some tiny little country where you can't event sneeze without delivering your germs either to Croatia or Italy.
Slovenians are climaxing right now. Somewhere in between "he [the hacker] should have known better, yet, he's a genius" and "letting FBI take him would mean the end of our sovereignty, our government should employ him".
I'll just sit back and enjoy watching. Comments by fellow citizens who don't know much about computers are just hilarious, I don't know about our national media, it's scary how poor the reporting is.
That's exactly what I want - simplicity. Using Linux as a desktop for several years, turning away from KDE & Opera i've been using and later Firefox on gnome, i've recently discovered Epiphany, gnome's own web browser. It uses Gecko and is stunningly simple. Just what i need, no more, no less.
(am not a fanboy, this is merely an advice i would be greatful to get a year and a half ago)
That's why FOSS is great for education. Not that the students are expected to make a perfect software project. Thay can see the process of creating one and even try to implement their own ideas inside a bigger project (just trying won't harm anywone, a student can easily make his own fork or never even publish his experimentations...).
Not to mention 'customer' feedback can be a lot quicker and of greater quality than the ones parent mentions.
Have you thought about the lake? That kind of cooling system would increase the lake's temperature. It would definitely affect the lake's ecosystem (and it does wherever they're doing it already)
I agree, it does happen. My 5-year old sister (she can't read but she uses mouse like an adult) plays flash games on newgrounds and similar web sites and i've seen her watching a preview of hentai and even some video pr0n (they have ads to such sites on the dress-up games page). She used to even immitate girls and telling stories from pr0n crap.
THe first thing to do was the sex talk at a dinner all the family had, because this is one of the possible solutions. You tell your children that's how it is when two people love each other and it's nothing bad. My sister later asked me if mum and dad do this also. I also told her that the pr0n thing she'd been watching is bad, while those girls are doing it for money and don't enjoy it quite so much usually, while it's not about love.
I don't know but since then my sister doesn't surf pr0n anymore, i still have some FireFox security but only passive (i can see what sites she's been to, but they're not auto blocked).
You (especially americans) may say she's too young for that kind of conversation but i think the best solution is to make it clear so that nothing stays secret. I think my sister is very responsible.
You can't treat your child like he is stupid and hide the truth from him, specially about things he will come to sooner or later.
(I have 3 younger brothers and a sister - i'm a bit of a parent, too)
"You'll realize just how powerless the average person is to achieve true change in the media or politics."
Think about what you just said. You'll realise how powerles media and politics are without all the average people.
