Why do people admit to not reading the articles and post anyway? IO is clearly defined in the first sentence of the second outbound link. I guess reading all of that would have made it impossible to get "first post" status.

What business? I don't even see how they make a dime from this service. I've used AIM for years without paying AOL or seeing a single advertisement. I've also never used their client either as many clients are compatible with AIM.

I like XMPP and like the fact that I have my own server so I don't have to be too concerned about privacy issues. According to AOL's TOS, they own all of your IMs and wouldn't be surprised if Google had something similar.

I'd like something that was point to point without a server in the middle. The messages are encrypted so ISPs can't peak in and all logging is left up to the parties involved in the conversation.

  3. Release too early? on PC Magazine Editor Throws in the Towel on Vista · · Score: 1

I think Vista was just rushed to be released to soon just like the Playstation 3 and a bunch of other products on the market.

Consumers gripe and complain when companies release buggy products but complain when a company keeps delaying their product as was the case with Vista and now with the new version of OSX. XP machines are still running fine so what's the rush? They should have spent another year on it and made sure it was good to go before releasing early under consumer pressure.

I say shut the fuck up and let the company release when they think the product is ready to ship. Otherwise you get 360s with no built in HD player, bugs in Vista, 360s that overheat, understocked PS3s, and on and on. Granted the companies should have the balls to say "not till it's done" and should not release news of a release until they have the product shrink wrapped and on pallets.

Aren't you being a bit selfish? If you don't want Windows or Mac then don't install them. It's likely that your BIOS has support for tons of things which you are not using nor forced to use. And since you're a Linux user, I'm sure you're aware of all the crap that you'll probably never have to enable in the kernel but it's there if you want it.

I'm not really sure what you mean by slippery slope either. Slippery slope to what? More features? I also don't think this is for the desktop market. I couldn't tell from the article but I assume this is meant for server class machines where virtualization is awesome for fairly cheap HA setups and having this come straight from Dell this way makes it that much easier to pitch to a guy with an MBA.

Wow man, that's friggin' horrid. I hope you take home a nice chunk of change to put up with that.

I've only worked for progressive internet companies so I haven't witnessed these types of horrors but it pisses me off when people think you will be more productive when they structure everything (your desktop, schedule, dress code, etc). While I don't think people should have porn on their work PC, come in late, or dress like a hobo. I do feel you should be able to make things as comfortable as then can be within reason.

Not really. Of course diskettes sucked but they did something that CDs still really aren't good for and that's sneaker net. Diskettes sucked because they would fail often but people really didn't archive data on them. They were used to distribute software or copy a file to a machine that had a printer in non-networked environments in which case they were just fine. Thumb drives are really the new microfloppy and floppy. They have a pension for failing but you'd be pretty dumb to use it as you're only backup medium.

He has a good point. The tech seems cool and all especially for long term storage but solid state is the real future. Battery life is still pretty poor for most devices and many people are moving away from the desktop. I personally don't own a desktop anymore and just hook my laptop up to a keyboard, monitor, and mouse when at home or work. I foresee the desktop dying except for hardcore gamers and servers. If I'm correct then spinning media doesn't make sense. Motors drain battery life and increase latency while throwing in a mechanical cog that can fail.

  9. What we need on Sprint Drops Customers Over Excessive Inquiries · · Score: 2, Insightful

What we need is a company to come along and push customer service. The current phone companies don't care because you really don't have much choice. Either stick with crap or move to other crap. If you were in their shoes would you really want to hire the best people for customer service? Who cares if they suck and people get pissed. They will just whine on forums and in their living rooms but still keep paying.

The only fix is when one company stands out and provides excellent service. So many people will start moving that other companies will need to bump their level of service to compete. Until this happens everything will remain the same.

In the end they are doing the right thing as far as their shareholders are concerned. Having shitty support service but making really "cool" phones is all they need to do to get our money.

Blowing things up really isn't all that fun. I was a demo guy in the Army and for the most part it was a pain in the ass. I do like the feeling when the wave of energy passes through your body but we always hunkered down and never actually witnessed an explosion because of the danger factor. And in Iraq it was a lot of hard work to pile up shell after shell of UXOs or captured IED components in 130 degree heat.

You can have the demo camp. I want a $450 camp where you just lay on a beach and get drunk with beautiful women. Where's that brochure?

Most of the people I know that are in collge or whom have already graduated aren't really going to learn. They are more focused on getting it out of the way to start their career but those diplomas are meaning less and less as more people are pushed into higher education. College text books are availible to anyone who has the cash and most schools publish course outlines including homework assignments and in some cases MP3s of lectures so technically you can take the course at a fraction of the price without getting the credits for it.

I'm just glad companies like the one I work for isn't fazed by a degree. I also think it may have something to do with the mindset of the Linux community though.
