  1. Social aspects? on Piracy Killing PC Gaming? · · Score: 1

I've found a number of factors have led me to console based gaming; though I like a lot of games on the PC, gaming in front of the TV with friends is more of a social occasion than sitting quietly upstairs in a room by myself. Gaming is also finally (slowly) losing its stigma as being in the realm of techfolk. As the variety of games for consoles increases, many of them most likely appeal more to those who don't necessarily want to spend time and money on upgrading their PC to play the latest releases when they can throw a CD/DVD in the drive of their pre-configured and optimised-for-gaming machine.

  2. And yet again... on Hackers Clone E-Passport · · Score: 1
...people are trying to use technology instead of hard work instead of for assistance. The addition of extra identifying characteristics to the passport system widens the skillset required to accurately produce a forgery. As few people are capable of the full range of these skills, the cost of the forgery increases and thus its value goes down.

To create a full passport it would therefore be necessary to clone the passport itself, physically alter the appearance of the picture to match yours and ensure all the data is consistent. That is, until the authorities decide that technology is foolproof and stop using visual checks in addition the electronic ones, but I'm sure none of the high-up types in these industries would consider such an absurd notion.

  3. How fast is fast? on Liquid Armor the New Bulletproof Vest · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article states that the material returns to a liquid state rapidly after pressure ceases (which I assume would help further with shock dissipation), but how fast is that? Combat will just require a different approach to breach the defence. Off the top of my head, it woould seem that if your clothing suddenly stiffens, you're vulnerable to attack, especially if you're in the middle of doing something dangerous that requires the use of your limbs.
