I'm an old fart & too uptight/unhip to illegally download or share music, but before one of the free (& legal) music sites was getting shutdown a few years back I thought I'd have a look around, search by genre, etc. -> Ska -> "Suburban Legends" who IMO were awesome.
Since then I've seen them play a few times (incl the concert tour referred to above), and have purchased their CDs & DVDs at the concert venue, so they've made WAY more money from me by making a few MP3s available online than if they had gone ye olde route - and AFAIK none of this backed by a RIAA label.

Anyone know a rough price for these? It's been a while, so I can't remember the exact price, but I got a pair of Transitions glasses from Costco , for something in the $125 range (incl. frames, (prescription) transitions lenses & anti-reflective treatment).
Personally, I'd like to see ESR's response to these rebuffs.
I wouldn't. IMO it's a pity Eric got so emotional & made such a public scene, but here's the really, really great thing:
It doesn't matter whether he's right or wrong.
If Redhat were selling Fedora & its numbers dropping meant that the Redhat developers would have to go work on closed source, THEN I'd care. It's important that they continue to make such wonderful contributions. But they sell RHEL/etc, and as far as I can see they're profitable (http://biz.yahoo.com/e/070109/rht10-q.html).
So what Ubuntu if performs some task better than Fedora does? Ohmigod! Competition! Choice! This is GREAT news. Switch. Switch back. Whatever.
IMO one of the really cool things about Linux is that there is NOT a monoculture. No one company has a monopoly on innovation, and the builtin sharing means in time everything progresses.
It's their first album. Their second A Weekend In The City is out in the US on Feb 6th 2007. I heard them live recently & the new songs seemed awesome too.
[Of course, it is early to tell if they'll stand the test of time, but I do feel the same way about it as in this respect I did listening to early (post Syd) Floyd (says me, showing my age!), U2, Prodify & Radiohead - the others I came to a few albums in. Who knows? They're been up there for me for about 1.5 years now.]
Dang! Of all the bands to mention. Now I have to reply;-)
[They're one of my favorites, as in "The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, U2, The Cure, New Order, The Prodigy, Radiohead, Bloc Party favorites"- not "NKotB, Britney, 50cent favorites" - though of course everyone has different tastes, so YMMV (or YMWV)]
Check out http://www.blocparty.com/ - you can listen to extracts from Silent Alarm to see if you'll like 'em.
I try to only buy music that is good enough to stand the test of time [so I also avoid DRMed music] - and for me the ability to have softcopies increases the need to do this. Since I ripped my entire CD collection to Ogg Vorbis & MP3, I've been listening to pretty much all of it, just because I CAN, without having to fumble thru hundreds of CDs.
10 years from now I fully expect to rip my Bloc Party CD to a new format, suitable for playing at the welcome ceremony for our Alien Overlords.
Agreed. And how many passwords (or even ATM pins) do people typically have? OK, I'd use it for entry to my secret underground lair - but YouTube, Google, Amazon, Travelocity, Ticketmaster, etc will have to stick with qwerty/numpad for now.
>> There must be something very unusual with that drive. You get 1GB Flash parallel IDE disks for about $45.
> Really? Link me, I'd like one.
I'm not sure which flash drive the grandparent was talking about. The ones google yields seem much more expensive. However, you can get compact flash to IDE adapters for $16 from:
The MediaMVP looks interesting, but it also looks like it's only good for a subset of things the laptop can play. Can't play Flash, YouTube/Google Video, Vorbis or AAC music, internet radio that requires a password...

http://www.google.com/ig vs http://my.yahoo.com/ not much of a difference there.

I 100% agree.
Oh, I shouldn't said that!

So add in a $25 1GB compact flash, e.g. http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4174273?site=sr:S EARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
and you're within a few dollars.
I haven't used it, but http://mvpmc.sourceforge.net/ looks very interesting & it supports ogg.
Great idea!
please ask simple simon what's on radio dial one -> password1
