Actually, I slightly disagree with you. The NDP always has what they think are the best interests of the people in mind when they introduce bills. Of course, being the NDP, this means that everyone will be wary about touching it. Canadians, get out your pen and paper, and write to the following people:
Gilles Duceppe
and ask them to support this bill. Remember, mailing your MP requires no postage, and they tend to take written letters over e-mail anyways. Show them that we support this, and we want this through.
Same here. I think my favourite vector is a coat. Just hide your bag of chips (I've actually managed to get a full bag of chips in on many occasions) in your coat, and carry it in (you're too warm). Besides, most places in my area just don't care.
Not trying to justify the law, just trying to figure out the justification. I think that the logic is something along the lines of "If you leave your vehicle unlocked, that means that a criminal could steal it and use it in a crime. By locking your car, you reduce the odds that a criminal will steal it, and hence reduce the odds of crimes happening." Just my thoughts though.
Actually, a friend I know has a situation like that. They use it on their freezer (which they keep packed full). Since there's no latch to keep it closed, they just use the lock/key to keep it closed.
Incredibly off topic, but your sig had me thinking. For computers, KiB are computationally convenient; multiplying by two is easier than multiplying by 10.
You. Because you are the loudest. They will make examples of anyone who openly does it in an attempt to scare those who do it quietly. They'll also attack the occasional quiet person to make it obvious that just staying quiet doesn't mean you're safe.
Depends on what you define as too bad. When a majority government is in power, there are essentially no checks and balances (aside from the courts and the speed reduction of the Senate). However, with a minority government (like we have now), it's possible to keep them from doing anything too stupid (except that the Liberals are bloody cowards too afraid to face the electorate).
Would that be CHOI? Bare in mind though, the refusal to act was by a Liberal minister, and it is now the Conservatives in power. Maybe they'll be more willing to listen, maybe not. Either way, it's worth a shot.
Yeah, the Conservatives didn't listen at the time. So we voted in the Liberals who promised to get rid of it. Turns out they were lying, but we didn't care at the time. Then, fast forward to two years ago, the GST is finally being reduced by the Conservatives. Go figure. Of course, in Canada, there are actually 4 parties with seats in the federal government, not just 2.
Ah yes, how dare we obey our own laws. You ignorant fool, it doesn't matter if what we do in Canada is illegal in the USA, it matters if it's illegal in Canada. Want to change it? Too fucking bad. It's our country, you have your own.
As you are posting on the internet, I would assume that you are human, and hence possessing of a brain. Please use it, and realize that the second rule is an exception to the first. Much like x^0 =1, except when x=0, in which case it is undefined.
Which is worse? Having your personal freedom trampled or being blown up on a bus? Being tortured/shot as part of a reprisal?
Death is obviously worse. However, we have to think and calculate the risks. If we give our government an opportunity to take away our rights, they will do so. There are very few examples in history to suggest otherwise. The odds of being killed in a terrorist act are so small as to be almost negligible in your day to day life. Any change we make in our daily lives is simply giving them what they want, to make us be afraid and let our own government do the work.
You'd rather sit back and wait for this to happen to you?
I think I made that quite clear in my previous post. When the alternative is what you suggest, then yes, I'd much rather sit back, live a normal life, and wait for anything disastrous to happen. After all, when is the last time you earthquake proofed your house?
The tyranny of amassed wealth and influence is far better than the tyranny of guns and fanaticism.
And a lack of tyranny is better than both. So let's try to make sure that there are no tyrants.
If the alternative is to live in a society where personal freedoms are trampled, the power of the ruling class runs unchecked, and fear is cultivated to keep the masses down, then yeah, I'd rather sit back and wait. Fortunately, it's not binary, but a continuum. Let's move a bit more toward the more reasonable response of gathering intelligence and preparing a world class emergency response team, as well as diplomacy and tact.
But since you're just beating the straw out of that poor man, I suppose you don't really care what I have to say.
Hmm. Deny them the release of death, revolutionize science, and possibly change the world only to show them some smart-ass math student's flippant remark? I like it.
Seems like great science work. However, I'm a bit worried about the potential applications. If/when this process becomes cheap, I can just see this becoming permanent make-up.
Of course not. The issue here is that the total damage done because it's illegal is much greater than the damage done if it weren't. The solution is to control it, like you would alcohol and tobacco. Look at it this way, was the US better off during prohibition?
What are you, crazy? They'll just go after the internet. From now on, only licensed ISPs are allowed to connect people, and only to licensed websites. Of course, the government will do the licensing, and with heavy lobbying, that means the various trade groups (RI|MP)AA, TV stations, Microsoft, Apple, etc... will do the licensing. Remember, it isn't paranoia if it turns out to be right.
Ahh, but here's the question. Is that an inclusive or an exclusive or? If it's exclusive, then any right the State has, you no longer have. If it's inclusive, then any right the state has you might have as well.
Ah, but what about the next? When he has to give a work history, and they ask if it's ok to call his previous employers. The reference is not so glowing when they realize you fucked around for the last month.

Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius.
Ahh, but may I direct you the prior art of round fruit?

Ahh, how I wish you were crazy. Sadly, yesterday's paranoia is today's reality.
Hey, we may be responsible, but just remember: you guys signed her on for damn near 5 years.

I suggest that we name it after an e-mail application originally designed by the same group of people who worked on Netscape.

If you're not active, you're just giving them a reason to show you the door. Have some decency and do your job.
