  1. Good indeed, but remember the roots on LinuxCare Gets $32M In Funding · · Score: 3
The fact that linux is becoming recognized in the mainstream media and by corporate conglomo's is indeed a "good thing".

However, we need to remember that we don't need to justify ourselves. Each of us use linux for whatever reason we want to. I personally don't care if linux takes down windows. It would make me happy as I have a personal vendetta with MS, but as far as the development of linux, it's unimportant.

As linux grows into the masses it is becoming simpler and easier to use. This is a good thing. When people have trouble, they look for support from a trusted name. LinuxCare is looking to be that name.

All of this is well and good, as long as linux stays in touch with it's roots.

It is important to remember what free software is really about. Freedom. Not price.

Don't use VA's IPO, RedHat's IPO, or LinuxCare 32m to justify your use. There is plenty of justification already in place.

  2. Re:Debian on Petreley on Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 · · Score: 1
It's weird you should say that you've never had problems with the source in Caldera, because thats the reason I stopped using it. I couldn't get a single thing to compile, not just library errors, but crazy errors that appear out of no where. It seems to me that most people I've talked to agree that Caldera has some issues with compiling.

  3. Why TurboLinux? on Intel Invests in TurboLinux · · Score: 1

    My main question is this:

Out of all of the linux distributions, why TurboLinux?

Now, I've never used TL and I don't know anyone that does so I can't judge its value as a distribution, but I don't understand why intel picked them over say Mandrake? However it's good that one of the less published distributions is getting attention.

Perhaps Intel is just trying to grab more headlines by throwing their corporate weight around?

  4. Re:Sadly enough... on MTV Profiles "Hackers" · · Score: 1

I am 14 myself and a freshmen in high school. I believe that the people in my school are the prime target for such a show. For example, I told some of my better friends that I DIDN'T use windows or MacOS, and instantly I was thought to be a "hacker". My friends have asked me questions like "Have you ever tried to break into like the FBI or something?" To this I respond no, and explain the difference between a hacker and a cracker, and how I consider myself to be a hacker but definately not a cracker. They have no concept of what the internet really is besides a way to get p*rn and instant messages. They don't understand that there is internet outside of AOL. These are the people that MTV are targeting. Beware the penguin Z

  5. This should be interesting on MTV Profiles "Hackers" · · Score: 1

First of all, there's the obvious difference between hackers and crackers. I've seen the commercial from this and the funniest thing about it is what this one kid says "Straight out, I'm not your typical hacker" What the hell does that mean. I'm not sure what MTV is trying to accomplish by airing this. Since most of the information is going to be wrong anyways. If there is a typical hacker/cracker I doubt it's a backstreet-loving, britney spears devotee that spends his time trying to break into his friend's AOL accounts.

  6. Msft Shaking in their boots on Microsoft Clarifies Linux Myths · · Score: 1

I think it's most interesting that Microsoft would actually make a page to defend themselves. It shows how seriously they are taking linux as a threat. They do have some good points though. (1 or 2) Such as desktop on linux. It's not a problem but something that needs to be addressed before linux can attack Windows 9x and 2000. Although some of the facts are terribly wrong. Such as linux not having power managment or the filesystem being limited to 2 gb. Seems like Microsoft is a little behind.
