Since I can't read the article, I'll speculate wildly. I've often wondered why chlorophyll isn't black for maximum sunlight absorption.
I'd imagine that the range of structures that can produce chlorophyll-like function is constrained, and that such structures with broader absorption either aren't possible or aren't evolutionarily reachable.
Chlorophyll doesn't convert light energy to chemical energy... it absorbs the light, alright, but it uses the excitation to release two electrons to electron carriers that produce either ATP (energy) or reduced NADP (which is needed for carbohydrate synthesis). Light absorbtion rate isn't, generally, the limiting factor, in plants.
And that's why an American paper should be using the metric system? Because the 95% of the world that's not in America is too stupid to realize that it's an American publication writing to an American audience using the units of measure in use in America?
And the rest of the world calls us arrogant.
The main reason you should be using the Metric system is because it's the scientific standard, if the "American audience" is unable to comprehend internationally-agreed standards in measurement, they shouldn't be allowed to read.
Are you suggesting the entire world should rewrite the standards of measurement just to make America not have to learn a useful, relevant scale of temperature?
Degrees Kelvin, it's the Celcius scale but shifted so that absolute zero is 0 degrees Kelvin, while absolute zero is -273 degrees Celcius (to three significant figures).
...and if your webcam breaks or you've changed your haircut/face drastically then the machine just lets you log-in as normal (username and password).
However, when I read my manual it also said, "People with similar faces might be logged in to your account by accident." So I decided to not use this feature. It's pretty good for people with distinctive faces, though.
I'm 18, British, and currently doing one of my A-Levels in Mathematics, and while I'm generally seperated from the lower years (13-16 year olds) I occasionally find myself interacting with them. These kids do not understand maths at all.
Now, I know I'm doing A-Level Maths, but is it really unreasonable for the concept of pi-r-squared to be simple? While the top set maths (year 10/11) are at their usual level, the bottom sets continue to drop off the scales as our society's education system struggles to accommodate them. The exams have to get easier because more kids are failing, it seems.
Last year trigonometry was missing from an exam paper my friend's sister sat. She was doing an intermediate paper (and it's on the syllabus for it). Wasn't trigonometry mandatory for even the lower band paper, in days gone by?
Uh, I'm pretty certain when they say "configuration" they don't mean "hardware settings for video cards," I'm sure they mean your keyboard configurations, preferred options and the like.
Besides, what could a seven year old possibly need to hide? More to the point, if she did hide her dealings from the parents, who'll spot the nasty paedophile lurking around the cybercorner?

...but so are the people taking it.

Haha, exactly my take on this idea.
