    I take it, then, that you don't understand the cube/square law. If you did, you'd understand why a mouse offers more wind resistance and has a lower terminal velocity than a horse. It's not really about physics, it has to do with the way the ratio of volume to area changes as an object scales up.

    Ah, so in other words, it's about physics.

    Dear slashdot moderators. Bitching about the question in an "Ask Slashdot" or otherwise bemoaning the problem is not "insightful" it is "off-topic." Please moderate accordingly. There are some actual useful posts below this turd that have interesting solutions that would work well in a variety of scenarios. But when you moderate this crap up it obscures them.

    You can't forward the entire "conversation" to somebody, or include another person in your conversation easily when doing it in email. This is something Wave did nicely. You could add somebody to the entire thread and they can see everything from the start. With email you would have to start forwarding lots of individual emails around to bring new people up-to-speed (unless you do the horrid post-on-top thing most MS users do).

    They care because throughout modern history the ability of people to communicate to each other has been one of the greatest threats to any government. All nations are threatened by their own citizens. And the easier it is for people to discuss their grievances with said nation the harder it is for the ruling class. The fact that our government would consider such action is a blatant sign that we have crossed a line at some point whereby we are no longer governed by the consent of the governed but by the force of the government.

    We all market all the time. You, me, everyone. It's not just about flashy ads and lying to people. It's about convincing others that you, your product, your is of worth. If you can't do this you will fail at life. Some people are better at this than others. From the replies I've gotten - I'd say my point stands.

    You may be near-psychopathic but your logic sucks. Being sensitive to a term which insults you, others you know, etc. is not the same as "being offended by everything." You're just using that phrase to belittle others and post-hoc justify your beliefs that "GIMP is a good name."

    The name insults some people and justifiably so. That is a fact. You may disagree that it *should* but you cannot deny that others have a right to dislike it.

    Your stubborn refusal to consider someone else's feelings, combined with your signature, makes me think you have a remarkable lack of sensitivity, empathy, and social awareness. As such, you may not get much out of this post.

    I think you pretty much nailed it right there. He's way too out of touch with society to notice or care. He may as well run for public office at this point.

    It's only offensive to people who are crippled, know somebody who is crippled, feel the need to not offend people who are crippled, or who work in a professional business and don't want to potentially offend customers/employees/etc. who may be crippled, etc.

    In other words, it speaks volumes about the marketing ability of geeks. Just as I said. If I created the worlds greatest network monitoring system and named it "Portable Enterprise Network Information System" it wouldn't matter. Nobody is going to install PENIS in a professional environment.

    GIMP is a stupid name. You may not care. I may not care. It's still a stupid name.

    And it was patched much faster by Oracle and pushed out quicker by the Java install because Microsoft doesn't have insane control issues like Apple does.

    I agree in principle. But sometimes, mostly by mistake, the politicians do make good decisions. In this case being one of them (following the science). This behavior should be rewarded - perhaps over time we can train them to not be morons?

    Of course not. And no honest doctor or scientist ever claims vaccines work 100%. But they are *very* effective and your protection goes up dramatically if those around you are vaccinated (so even if it doesn't work for you there are few people around you for you to be infected from). This is all well known and understood by everyone with a medical degree. People who learned science as a pin-up girl and Playboy Bunny seem to have missed this class...
